Hello.
Most of you don't know me, and no wonder, i was never a very active member of the aow community. After a 3+ year break from the game i decided to wipe the dust off the cd and play it once more. Aow 1 is the game i used to spend most of my time on and i think i will once again :)
This map is a single player map in which you play the role of an elven ranger attempting to restore the balance between the creatures of the woods.
The map features text messages, new heroes and some other interesting stuff. I hope you like it. Have fun :) |

A very good, professionally designed map which uses many features that aren't seen too often in scenarios! The terrain is beautifully laid out with lots of picturesque eye candy filing on all the map, including even the most remote corners (some underground areas seems slightly worse than the surface level, but they'll still very nicely done), there are some exploration places, and the map is filled with locations to capture so that it should appeal to all the folks who like doing some ,,tourism" before finishing off the last foe. The AI players are positioned in such a way that forces player to divide his armies instead concentrating on one direction at time, providing you some challenge even when you accumulate pretty tough armies, e.g. the lizards keep resisting quite long because they can efficiently take advantage of the size of bodies of water in the south; I've also liked the fact that Halflings are in war with much more powerful Lizards from the beginning but they will usually stay alive until player makes it to their land and rescues them, but once the Lizzies are defeated they declare war (that all according to the story - surely it must have took Skout a long time of working to have it work this way). The story is good too with many interesting pop-ups (unfortunately, limited to neighbourhood of starting your location), but on the other hand, I really missed the fact that background map description is shortly and not interesting, and that there's only one sign on the whole map!! Therefore, the storyline seems to be one of the weaker points of the map, even though it's still much better than on average map. The second is, the Undead, who are supposed to be defeated as the last enemy and therefore should be really mighty, but don't offer a real challenge. They just sit in their cavern in third map level and wait for player to dig the entrances and assault (They also cast Death Mastery spell from time to time, but with the high mana income the player gets cancelling it with Disjunction is usually matter of one turn) with already amassed army of 3 and 4 level units, hardened with many spells; fortunately enough, there's enough good battling with AIs before to satisfy the player. Finally, it's important to note that you're not likely to end up with some Uberheroes killing alone helpless AI armies one after one, as it often happens on large maps, but you have to rely on units till the last day, which is IMHO very good thing.
Overall, in spite of few little weak points, it's a very good map, and a must try for everyone who likes playing SP. Keep it up, Skout77!

Very enjoyable map, thanks! Was thinking on a 3 for balance, as it was a bit on the easy side in regard to opposition, but it still took me forever and a day to complete, so I give 4 :)
I am thinking that you could have made a larger 3rd level, like a whole new world to conquwer, but that you got map making fatigue ;) I saved entering the 3rd level until the rest of the world was subdued and it is a toss up between enough as it is or a larger 3rd level.
Lots of fun, really nice design, full of life and surprises, some frustration and keeping me upp all night![Edited on 06/28/07 @ 11:11 PM]
