Red Moon, Blue Moon - map for 2003 AoWH Competition.
Created by Art Of Vision, April - May 2003.
(I'd like to thank Arctic Wolf for his help on the map story).
Playable Races: Elves, Halfings, Dark Elves, Orcs.
(All other races are also present on the map).
Difficulty: Impossible
Number of surface levels: 3
Map Objective: conquer cities Amendruil, Red Moon and Blue Moon located
in the underground level.
Main Story.
here were times of great wars, when the rivers ran red with blood.
Thousands left their heads, their hearts and their souls on the battlefields.
Mighty, proud and valiant were the people who inhabited the earth... Uncanny
and beatiful spells of magic were conjured throughout the land. Legends
of this time will remain forever, but they are only legends...long since gone!
The years slid past, and the once delightsome races degraded.
In the quiet years, wondrous elves extended and beautified their forests,
but improved themselves not; dwarves increased their fabulous wealth, but with
their natural distaste for risk extended their holdings no more; halfings
became idle and complacent in their cosy burrows; dark elves took leave into
abstract poetry, losing themselves in philosophy and aesthetics; orcs, followed
by goblins, went wrong in gluttony and bloody orgies; highmen and undead,
ruined by mutual hatred, continued their grotesque fight - a parody on the
great wars of antiquity..... The star of neutral races began to rise...
Quickly, it became apparent that humans are the undisputed leaders of the
new era. Not constrained with old-styled values like honour and courage,
they quickly developed methods of dealing with the ancient races, to whom
they beared only thinly veiled contempt and deep-seated hatred. Energetic,
pragmatic, primitive and numerous, the humans spawned quickly, founding new
cities and castles, forming new armies and building machines appropriating
the best dwarven technologies. With the largest cities of Azracs and
Frostlings - Red Moon and Blue Moon, they made treaties, bribing their
leaders and promising each of the two races advantages of the other.
This coalition, ruled by skilled human diplomats, conscripted the other
azrac and frostlings settlements, and the passive lizards had no other
choice but to join the alliance.
Meanwhile, other races beheld the humans actions with disdain and
astonishment. The war between neutral races was likened to a dog's fight
over a new found bone. They decided not to bother themselves by partaking
in such stupid squabble... Graciosly smiling, they watched the humans take
control over city after city and mine after mine, before they realized
that something was wrong. Their holdings had dominished and now belonged
to the neutral coalition... Facing the inevitable decline to nothing,
they chose to fight to the last drop of blood!
Their only true advantage left was the beatiful and unpredictable world
of ancient magic!

This is a very tough map to grade. The Terrain and Map Design are spectacular. The Story is very interesting.
But the map is impossible to play and beat if you select the Halflings as I did. The Ai is way too powerful!
Tone down the AI and give a little more attention to balance and you would have a classic. Please issue an update! |

This map is really a masterpiece! The terrain is spectacular, power of races is equal (I don't agree wih Daemon Zrat, in fact the Haflings - who have titan (!)from the start- have easy strt), story is great (especially Orcish)and I see that author spend much time copying terrain to underground (so I give 5 for Creativity). This is propably the best from all Heaven maps, I wish I could make something like it...
