To play this game as it was meant to be played please use the spheres already allocated for the hero. Please do not change them. This is a very difficult map. You will have tons of gold and quite a bit of mana but do not take that as to say it is easy. Follow the route, you will be shown the way. There are no short cuts except for the warp spell, so please do not use it either. Try to beat it by following the map. Thank you. |

This map is a very good idea and has a pretty good story, but it is intensely frustrating. Battles that you cannot win happen without warning (ie: in the first turn, if you take your level 1 king 4 hexes east he is attacked by 8 water elementals, hidden in the water, set on guard area). The most frustrating battle you cannot win is the final battle with the final badguy--simply because you can't even start the battle. "Cannot inflict damage" against AI enemy--he is immune to everything except he only has magic protection. Still, there aren't any items that give you magic strike, and enchanted weapon didn't seem to work.
PLAYABILITY = 2 The unbeatable stacks popping out of everywhere aren't very fun. Alot of reloading goes on during this game. And alot of waiting around. Case in point: there's a place where you have a shipyard to transport your king across an underground cavern that you need to cross. 4 turns to install galleon, 8 turns to build, then it gets killed by a slew of sea serpents. So change research to Cloud of Ashes (the only way to win this area), cast it over the shipyard, and wait 24 turns to build 3 galleons. The final battle being unplayable was highly disappointing. Especially since the map is password protected so I can't remove just one of his immunities in order to fight him.
BALANCE = 2 Too many way too hard battles that requires too much waiting and waiting and waiting.
CREATIVITY = 5 If it weren't for the insane battles and waiting, this map would be a very good one. It has a creative game world that seems to come alive (excellent example: a sign just outside your starting halfling town saying "there is nothing beyond this sea"--gives a feel of starting out small and provincial and moving to epic proportions). The terrain looks nice and some clever ideas are implemented.
MAP DESIGN = 4 Although this map is unbeatable because the final battle won't work (as far as I know), it wouldn't be fair to drop the ratings twice for the same crime (double jeopardy, you know). Map is well laid out, terrain keeps you moving through the story, triggers are put to good use.
STORY / INSTRUCTIONS = 4 The story is very good and there are a good number of text bubbles encouraging you on the way and giving instructions.
I highly recommend that mctkp release a second version of this otherwise very excellent map that makes the final battle playable and cuts down on just-plain-waiting-around-time here and there. Of course, I thought Enchanted Weapon would give me Magic Strike and enable me to kill the bad guy, so I admit that it may be a weird glitch in my system and I will gladly edit this review if I find that's the case. And perhaps I could have taken another 100 turns to kill all the ravaging units (that I started to avoid because of the tediousness of the battles), rebuild the 4 4-hex cities, upgrade them and pump out tons of leprauchans with magic bolts to kill the big baddie, but even if it was possible I didn't feel like doing it after 250 turns or so ended up being fruitless. |
