After 10 years this is the most downloaded map for the original AoW game on this site !!
Me thinks this warrants an update :)
Basic map info:
-All races playable
-Xl-map with 3 lvls
-highly detailed
-lots of custom made hero's and item's
-map is made for replay value
In this Update i included 3 map versions:
-the original map
-the new updated v1.3 map WL (With Leaders)
-the new updated v1.3 map NL (No Leaders) for Lan and PBEM games
What did he update you ask?
I took the PBEM version from this map and tweaked from there on , this means:
-I used Dix's underground terrain inversion technique. Which translates into using top layer graphics in underground levels (which is a bug), this made the extensive underground lvls a lott more appealing !!
-Used Tekk Zero's mapmakers addition to enhance it; Walking hero's and abilities normally not available for hero's , like healing. I added a bunch of new walking hero's to the ones already there in the PBEM version.
-Item's and hero's are tuned further, so no more physical immunity on items.
-added a few more teleporters for more AI interaction.
-Underground altars.
-slightly adjusted some area's.
Thank you for all the favorable reviews over the years.
I hope you will enjoy this new version :)
There is a follow up now !

Playability: 5
The most fun I have had with AoW since beating the campaign. I have explored this map for hours, and there are many more awaiting me.
Note: I played this map with my sister, also a rabid AoW fan. We both loved it, and the hotseat multiplayer worked just fine.
Balance: 4
Race-wise, all races start with the same general benefits. Very well balanced construction as far as cities and goodies spread across the map.
However, after a few cave/castle/etc. explorations, heroes were nearly invincible. I had a lvl 20 leader with 10/10/10/10, physical immunity, and spellcasting V before turn 50, which was nice, but OP. (And after reaching 30hps, I didn't know what to give him when he leveled...)
Creativity: 5
Absolutely brilliant. Heroes were very fun and unique, I cannot tell you how pleased I was to find Count Dracula and his supposed arch-nemesis nearby. ;) The complex underground was filled with goodies and was a ton of fun to explore. And the city names... xD
Map Design: 5
Again, brilliant. Very well-detailed as well. The underground was so exciting and well built scenically, it didn't give me the usual "bleh" underground feeling.
Story/Instructions: 4
Not a lot of story going on, but it was just as well. I liked the open-endedness. That being said, the occasional event notices that popped up did add to the intrigue of the map, especially in that center...
Additional Comments: Thank you so much for creating this map. Will play it again, many times. |

Playability: 5
Brilliant. Simple to start, easy to expand, with immediate options for what to do, where to go, and how to get yourself into trouble.
Balance: 4
Whilst there will be some good opportunities for the computer's AI to get ahead, it's nothing that would cause any hardship to those looking to play.
Creativity: 5
Absolutely brilliant methods of travelling the map. Easter eggs hidden throughout. Three levels of playground, where you need to either flood with fodder or tactically choose your paths...
Map Design: 5
It's great. Even after having gained control of the world, with a couple of stalwart enemies refusing to perish, there is still so much to explore (and rebuild).
Story/Instructions: 3
Whilst this is based on LotR, I didn't delve too deep with the backgrounds, overviews, or checking of accuracy. Still, there are nice little touches of pop-up messages, and characters/place-names to make you chuckle, so more than happy with that.
Additional Comments:
It's just a great map. And given that I am playing it nearly a decade after the last comments were made, it's doing a great job with longevity.
(Just for my own pride, I haven't been trying to win for a decade - but have recently resurrected my old files...) [Edited on 02/21/24 @ 12:15 PM]
