The declining Tepaskan Empire has withdrawn its legions from outlying areas. Azania Fortress once blocked the barbarian hordes from travelling through mountain passes into the Imperial heartlands: now the eunuchs of the capital, Rovansuu, bribe chieftains to fight each other in a feeble attempt to distract them from looting the peasantry.
Once the hordes passed through to greener pastures Azania itself became a forgotten mountainous backwater. Protected by geography its farms and mines have been restored by the locals while wars rage in the flatlands far away. Even a colony of Highmen still reside in the fortress itself. This situation could not last forever and now several warlords seek to conquer the area.
Worse, Undead have been sighted on the shores of the subterranean river that can be spotted flowing through the caves beneath Azania: the river is said to have become linked to the Styx during an especially bloody battle with the barbarians in the past. Tens of thousands of savages fled into the caves from the victorious Imperial garrison, only to be trapped until they starved.
