So I have no idea how practical or achievable this is, but I felt like just talking about it since I think it's a cool idea.

I was thinking about how cool it would be if we were to do some sort of PBEM campaign where we went through all the dev-made scenarios that came with the game, in chronological order (so beginning with Blood Isles), with each player assigned to a different race. Each player represents this race throughout the campaign, and joins in on every map that there race is represented on. This means that whoever plays Humans, Elves, Halflings, Goblins, etc, will get a whole bunch of games, while those who play Highmen, Lizards, etc, will play fairly rarely. After each game, races will be given points depending on its outcome - the race with the most points at the end (or whenever everyone calls it quits) would be declared the dominant faction of the Valley of Wonders. Larger maps might be glossed over to save time (i.e. After the Fall, Oracle's Eye) - unless there is a large demand to do those maps. I'll admit that After the Fall would be a lot of fun in this kind of context, but it might just bog things down too much.

Players could even conduct diplomacy outside of games - for example, perhaps the Elves would want to form a consistent alliance with the Halflings, so that they always go into maps with the expectation that they will ally with one another. This could even see factions arise - the Elves, Halflings and Dwarves band together, only to be matched by an alliance of Dark Elves, Orcs and Goblins. However, the treacherous Goblins abandon their masters to join the more promising Human-Azrac coalition. Perhaps rivalries between factions could erupt - the Undead form an alliance with the Dark Elves in game, but refuse to join their faction outside of the game, so the Dark Elves issue a "join or die" ultimatum. Or let it slide. Who knows?

I'm aware that having twelve commited players to do this is unlikely, so we would probably cut out races starting with the least present. Also the scoring system introduced would have to make sure that races are balanced depending on how present they are (perhaps + x points for victory and - x points for defeat? That way races who are in almost every map would have a higher chance at getting more points, but also a higher chance of losing some). Anyway, what do you think? Is it plausible? Or just a pipe dream?

As you probably have noticed, first post in every campaign game topic contains a line saying:
Standard House Rules apply (Follow these rules strictly, please note expecially:
Do not attack on the same turn that you declare war).
However, the House Rules say:
Do not attack on the same turn that you declare war. After declaring war against an opponent with whom you are at peace you must wait at least one turn before attacking them. This rule does not apply if there is no initial diplomatic status between the two opponents.

Since in all of these games (or at least those I'm playing) races belonging to opposite alliances start with "Unknown" diplomatic status, I guess that we may declare war and attack on the same turn?

Some of the Campaign games are badly delayed, if it's you Daemon, you get few days to get it going or the evil hand will hammer you out,
if it's someone else, I want names and good reasons!
Since in all of these games (or at least those I'm playing) races belonging to opposite alliances start with "Unknown" diplomatic status, I guess that we may declare war and attack on the same turn?
Thank you for pointing this out Gandalf. I didn't check the House Rules how it was specifically put, so let me correct myself:
Standard House Rules apply (Follow these rules strictly, please note expecially: Do not attack on the same turn that you declare war.
This rule does not apply if there is no initial diplomatic status between the two opponents).

Sorry about delayed answer, hopefully this did not affect your games.

No problem, none of my games did suffer because of this. Btw. the After the Fall and Reign of Chaos games seem badly stalled (no turns played for a month... and surprisingly, it's not even my fault ), perhaps something could be done about this?

Hey Deroman, I thought about your proposition of joining this campaign, and for the sake of it to continue I'm gonna go ahead and step in if needed. If no one has yet taken CSH's place as highmen I would do it, currently I have enough free time to send turns every day 95% of the time so I hope this could speed up.

Anyways, I'm up for it so let me know and I'll await turns in my email slipkyesbass (at) gmail (dot) com

I am dearly sorry for previously delaying a couple of the games earlier. Now that school is over and life has calmed down (along with finally getting Windows 7 up and running and whatnot), there should be no worries of held up games in the future. If a sub is needed, please don't hesitate to let me know. I'm looking for games to play anyways, seeing as the one I tried to start has only found one person willing so far...

I hope you guys will accept my apology.

Update 29.9.2010

Because of the terrible slowdowns (which partly is my fault aswell) in Campaign Games, a new rule will be implemented. We are not able to substitute every inactive player, so from now on in AoW Campaign Games every player have exactly 2 weeks time to play their turn and send it forward (please do this quicker if possible). There will be no first or second warnings or such, you all know the rule from now on. If player fails to do their turn in given time, the turn is send to me at ragederoman(at)luukku(dot)com, where I open it and surrender the player without any other actions. The result is that the player is threated as eliminated from the map and his victory points are calculated by the number of elimination. Player is not eliminated from the whole Campaign though, only forced to surrender in the map he was unable to keep active. This rule does not mean that there will be no more substitions though, so try to keep active to remain.

Exceptions are allowed if player (with decent reason) notices about his delay before the delay.

Rule taken to use on 29.9.2010, the possible surrender round will happen on 13.10.2010.

It's been a week from the date I should have surrendered the players that are stalling the games. But I guess some extra time can be given, especially since no one seems to be too interested about the progress of the games at this moment.
But get it done guys, my mercy has it's limits. Resends can be made, if needed.

23.11.2010 Update

Updates concerning following games:

AoW1 Campaign Game - After the Fall

Frostlings - Draco forced to subtitute list.
New player, Frostlings - DaemonVirus Master-Raiden(at)hotmail(dot)com
Orcs - Thorongil forced to subtitute list.
New player, Orcs - Nosferon rueface(at)abv(dot)bg

AoW1 Campaign Game - Reign of Chaos

Orcs - Thorongil forced to subtitute list.
New player, Orcs - Nosferon rueface(at)abv(dot)bg

Present situation:

962 - Blood Isles
1-2. Humans and Dwarves
3. Azracs
4. Goblins

965 - First Conflict
1-2. Orcs and Goblins
3. Elves
4. Halflings

993 - Kin Slayers
1-2. Elves and Humans
3. Dark Elves
4. Lizardmen

994 - After the Fall
Ongoing...

1000 - Reign of Chaos
ongoing...

1001 - Toadstool Vale
1-2. Orcs and Goblins
3. Halflings
4. Dwarfs

By most recent and active gaming here in AoWHeaven, I thought Nosferon will fill in nicely for Thorongil. I'm not sure if DaemonVirus is active right now, if not then substitution for Frostlings will be changed to surrender of Frostlings by the rule of 29.9.2010.

If community and players are ready for it, I will launch third wave of games soon.
The current diplomacy looks like this:
Keepers - Elves, Dwarves and Halflings / protecting Humans
Dark Elves - War on Humans

New players are now leaders of their races in all present and incoming games, this means you are in charge of your race's diplomacy aswell. Diplomatic moves can be done anytime at this thread, but before the games are launched to be made active for them.

I will give few more days for new guys (and old guys aswell) to do diplomatic actions for the races they control, before launching third wave games. Browse through the old thread posts to find out what has happened in diplomacy and where you stand. The idea of out-game diplomacy is that you might get favour, disfavour or simply increased interest for story driven games. Good example is Keepers: Elves, Dwarves and Halflings, which all started allied in map Reign of Chaos, giving them diplomatic advantage compared to diplomaticly less active Dark Elves, Goblins and Orcs, which all started with unknown relations. If we can include a new aspect to this whole campaign game, where races forge allies, make wars, possibly double-cross or turn on eachother for interesting reasons that hopfully fit to their story, we add much more to this game that there would be without it. Diplomacy is done simply by writing the message/diplomatic action in the colour of your race. You don't have to write reasons for them, but if you want to explain them, it might give us all more interested aspect. For example Dark Elves waging war on Humans on story driven reasons, or Undead eradicating all life? Or maybe Frostlings unificating all tundra? Chances are endless - only your imagination is the limit.

At this stage diplomacy looks like this:
Keepers - Elves, Dwarves and Halflings / protecting Humans
Dark Elves - War on Humans

This means only 5/12 races have made anykind of meaningful out-game diplomatic actions.

PS. I would like to refer to my last post, that PawelS has same right as I do to substitute players. So substituting is done completely by netural standing, and the substitutions are not affected by the player diplomacy or in-game standings. Me and PawelS are players in the campaign game such as any other, our role here to keep the campaign game running is completely seperate role to our player roles. So do not fear to wage war upon us, if such is your desire.
