Okay we are new to playing this game online.
We tried to start a game using the in game options that are built in. Entered the IP address and nothing happens. So we begin looking around these forums and see that everyone seems to be using things like Hamachi and Tunngle to play.

Why do we need third party programs that open our personal information on our computers up to total strangers?

I tried Hamachi with some trusted friends, though I still would never just open my bank account number and passwords and our business info to them, but when I logged in some strange person I never met was in my Hamachi window. No idea who that was. But I clicked the name and the option to browse was there. Curious if people could just root thru my own computer I clicked it and was able to look at some of his folders. I logged out immediately and never looked of course. Why would I use a program that lets strangers go thru my business and personal info as if they were in my house? I shouldnt have to do that to play a game.

Now with Tunngle, it seems a more professional gaming platform such as Gamespy so I gave it a shot. But all it does is hang at the starting adapter part. It installs the Tunngle adapter. It starts and it asks if I want to use that adapter. I say yes and it just pops up asking me if I want to use that adapter over and over and never actually starts up. http://www.tunngle.net/community/topic/47201-tunngle-adapter-problem/
Im using the new version. I tried to the older version. Im using win 7 64 bit. Im still trying to get this to work. And its a known issue on their forums.

Gamespy also wouldnt work. It give me an error message "There was an error that prevented the game from being launched. Check to make sure the game is properly installed and that the path is correct." And this too is a known issue on the gamespy forums. http://forums.gamespy.com/user_support_forum/b50829/17115000/r20005920/
But just like Tunggles forums, there is no fix for me. I have checked the path and the path is correct. I can even launch the game in single player mode via gamespy using the same path. Jut not multiplayer.

All I want to do is play this game with 2 friends. I dont want to get random rooms, or find players just for a game. Its a very simple thing im trying to do here. Just connect 3 friends online to play. Ive got a Gateway gaming computer thats only a couple years old. All up to date. The game plays fine. Its the multiplayer networking bs that is driving me insane.

Can someone please help?

ps Ive also looked at Wippien, though I never bothered to dload it after reading the first sentence. "You will be assigned an IP address to enjoy full network services with your friends - just as they would be sitting next to you."

Why would I want people I game with to have full network access as if they are sitting in my house with access to my computer just to play a game?

So intrusive and unsafe. With todays threats of identity theft and worse, why isnt there an easy option to just play the darn game without opening up my whole life to a "virtual" stranger??!!

Hello eyefeeder,

Yeah connecting for online games has always been bit tricky with this game, but once you get it to work, you wont regret it. There used to be info thread for setting online games here, but Roger deleted the main post for some reason. Which is unfortunate, it seemed to cover most issues.

One thing that could help is to forward ports 2302 udp and 6073 tcp from your router to your internal ip address (if youre using router that is). Also when connecting through direct ip connect, make sure you're trying to connect to the external ip (can be found here). And make sure no1 got any virtual networks connected in this case (hamachi network needs to be manually disabled from network properties, if you have it installed)

If these dont help, you can always ask more info on our AoW chatroom also (see my signature). There are usually some people there setting games or just idling around..

I'll paste my answer from another topic. Some people are located behind NAT of ISP or router, configured in a way that doesn't allow incoming connections initiated from the outside (and that's actually not "some", but "a lot of"). Special NAT traversal solutions are needed so those people could host the games.

If you're opening your personal information to total strangers, it's your own fault, not Hamachi's: folders are shared with settings specified by you, and if you have chosen to share them with "everyone" and with no password protection, you get exactly that.

Also, try Evolve: we're testing it now, looks very promising. And yep, Tunngle appears to be crap after all =(

Okay and thanks for the fast responses.
Im very bad with networking. Ive never done any of it. Though i know my way around windows well enough.

So I think I blocked all the file sharing on my com.. though im not postive. If someone can tell me the procedure to block that using windows 7 for me and windows xp for my friends. I would love you forever.

I always worry in things like this that I dont know well that there will be hidden aspects im not aware of and are wide open even though I stopped the sharing where I did. (control panel/network and internet/network and sharing center/change advance sharing settings. Then I opened both home and public and turned off the obvious file sharing. Not sure about the "file sharing connection" and the 128 bit encrytion stuff though. Anyway.. if someone can tell me if that is all i need id appreciate it.

Also ive tried all versions of Tunggle now and the adapter just wont start. So I give up.

I may try gameranger or evolve, so thanks for those. But Hamachi did work for us, and its simple enough. So id rather do that if I can assure our financials are safe and sound.

As for this below. Ive no clue how to do it or why to do it. Is that going to make the in game multiplayer actually work when we put in our ip address, rather than finding nothing?

And if so can you walk me thru the steps. I do know my ip btw

Thanks again for the help

I think you did it correctly. Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings, and then you can either turn off file/printer sharing or turn on password protected sharing. Can't say anything about XP though, I haven't seen it in a very very long time.

That's needed if you use a router to share your internet connection between two or more PCs (just ignore this paragraph if it's not your case). Short version of "why" is: your ISP gives you only one IP address at a time, and if you share it between different computers, then other people who're trying to connect to your IP don't know which of your PCs they really need. The port forwarding is a feature that takes care of this problem, it's basically a set of rules like "if there's an incoming connection at port 80, then forward it to PC #1; and if there's an incoming connection at port 6073, then forward it to PC #2". As for instructions, there's no way to provide them, because the setup process varies depending on your router model. Just look for the "Port forwarding" or "Port triggering" in the router settings and you'll figure it out from there - it shouldn't be difficult.

Port forwarding and what not scares me. I have no idea anything about networks. But.. good news. Gameranger worked like a charm. Thanks for that suggestion. Simple to use. No errors. Programs been around for over ten years, so its trusted. Its made for gaming like gamespy. So I feel safter that its not made to connect people to my coms data. Just for hosting a game. Awesome.
One thing ill note. When we exit the game and try and start another one. It says the games not found. But exiting Gameranger and starting it back up solves that problem.
