Topic Subject: FFS Where Are All The Online Players Hiding!?
posted 03-28-11 11:26 AM EDT (US)
Tried MSN, Tunngle, Hamachi, Gameranger, and even Gamespy.. and the only players I can find are Russians and its awkward playing with them because I have no idea what they are saying in game and they seem to be reluctant to play with me anyway since I dont know their language. Plus they tend to only want 1v1 games nowadays it seems.

Where are all of my old friends at? Surely there must be some secret society meeting somewhere to play AoW online? Where is it!?

If theres not one.. I think I would suggest Tunngle. It looks like a very clean program and reminds me alot of gamespy.

but.. I dunno, I just want my old crew back

This has been discussed in various threads here. Some like Tunngle and some prefer others.

Well its not discussed enough.. either that, or its discussed too much! Someone give me a ring when the discussion ends and the action begins. My email has been updated.

Incidentally if you were going to quit from a bunch of email games without telling anybody, it would have been better if you had left your password with one of the password keepers. That way the games could have continued in your absence...

I would like to play this game again, eventually, as I very much enjoyed it.

I understand that some of you may find the idea of playing me distasteful as in the past I have proven to be a sore loser. I am not as competitive as I had thought and prefer to assist and fight at the side of allies, rather than stand alone during free-for-alls.

Besides that, I actually do feel a bit more realistic concerning these games, and have since learned how to accept defeat in them.

I would hope that if I reload this game into my computer.. I would have people to play online.

Well...think about it anyway >;p

I don't know this for sure, but I think there is a general tendency towards play by email these days. As that allows people to play in disconnected bursts of activity as opposed to one continuous span of time whilst playing. Does that make sense?

An online Aow game can take 8 hours to finish, where as a PBEM game could still take that long - but it's distributed across several disconnected sessions of play for each person. That being more convenient with - I know it's a cliché but: "Today's modern lifestyle"

Hi again Warqueen

Some of us still prefer online games. But it can be bit difficult to find players sometimes, because players are scattered to various groups and programs. You can add me to MSN if you like, my address is griffith02@hotmail.com. The russian players are also pretty active, they play at AoW2rus network in hamachi (same password).

Some central meeting place would be nice. Something light to use and able to support more than 16 users.. IRC -room could be a good idea, as some1 suggested. Might start one up soon, once I get the bot working on it (so it wont get owned so easy) .

Welcome back WarQueen

I've still got u on MSN but havnt seen you on for a while. If u've changed ur address u can add me too dross1827 at hotmail dot com.

I didnt mind you getting a little angry after a game, just meant u had a competitive spirit.

Griffith, Munataros and me have been playing 3 player games lately with Griffs new mod called Strange Lands, would be great to have a 4th. Or 4 player any other mod/version. I wouldnt mind giving that mp 1.5 evolution a try.

Canada, Finland and Australia. Not so far away from eachother, quite easy to schedule I guess?

I used to play with couple Singaporean and Japanese guys. Due our works it was quite difficult to set up games properly.

("little offtopic. Do you know, Griffith, if they still continue Berserk, and if there are any more seasons coming for the anime? I faintly remember there was only one season, and even that was cut off from the ending.)

Hehe, yeah scheduling might seem to be bit problematic, but it never stopped us before.
(I might exaggerate a bit)

And no, I don't think they made another season for Berserk.. Which might be a good thing actually, the season they made was pretty awesome imho. But I haven't read the mangas, so don't know if there was enough good material for more seasons..

Another awesome and bit similar anime I could recommend is Record of Lodoss War. I really appreciate the atmosphere in especially the OAV version. The remake (sequel) isn't so classy, but longer and not too bad either.

Oh, and Seirei no Moribito is another very good medieval-fantasy type anime! (actually many consider this a true masterpiece)

Cheers

Occasionally Eagleman, Olop and I play on Sunday afternoons in the US (~20:00 UTC). We play on game ranger. We usually set up via phone call, so it ain't anything permanent. Nonetheless, if you're looking for a game around then, good chance we'll be on.

Davespice has a good point about PBEMs; I sure do play a lot of those for the reasons he mentions.

I think a bit different. I played WoW PvP Arena 4 years now. And its only Teampvp. I am capped to some mates...

I actually really miss FFA games, cause FFA is simply the best to prove some survival skill and i think most people prefere it over other pvp modes. Everytime i did host a game over at gamespy they all did demand a FFA game hardly ever team games or 1vs1.

"AoW2rus" is the only superactive Hamachi network. Besides that, there arent places to meet people (every day).

I am surprised Dracoden isnt russian (as I believed)

I am surprised Warqueen returned (do you want to suffer?)

I am surprised...

I am surprised...

I don't really care in what category they're clumped, whether it be a medieval fantasy, scifi or anything between them, I will like it if there's a good and original story to follow. I also like Japanese voice acting, a lot, usually top notch quality! (Actually this is very important, Japanese voice acting unimaginably better than dubbed.)

Somewhat belated reply...

I always will perfere "The Hakkeden" never saw something better, its surreal, medieval japan and brutal plus hard to follow the story.

Indeed the ingredients to make a perfect anime.

IRC chatroom would be really great, cause i prefere the gamespy approach, just without the spam, problem is, people should find it too.

The only other hope is, that, aow3 is *really* in development and they install an new room to play for us somewhere in the www!

Until then, i am afraid hamachi and msn is the only real solution? Msn does not attract strangers and hamachi is limited.

Too bad, there is no IRC chatroom on the HG site?

I've read and heard something about it, some crazy stuff they say. And I've heard it's quite heavily symbolical. Might have to take a look at all of these some day.

Tunngle is the closest one to GS right now, as far as I know, but it seems many (or some) people have some problems with it and it isn't very popular (maybe for reasons mentioned). For example, even now there seem to be only 3 people in Tunngle AoWSM lobby.

What I, and some others too, have pointed out before, is that there seem to be quite number of people playing AoWSM online every day, but they are just scattered between many different platforms.

You guys should gather with all other players using Hamachi.
Being aware of the "scattered problem", there are 2 preety active networks.

AoW2rus (same password)
AoW2rus2 (same password)

Believe it or not, many times first network is full when I try to join.
The good point is that they have a moderator, so inactive players are kicked (you will have to rejoin when you want a match).

Concerning to Versions... since those networks are russians, they play 95% MP Evolution, but thats because most people is russian (and follows Hellbrick's works). Someone joked that they evolved into "rushians"

If you want to play CoMa, BNW, Dwiggs, feel free to do it. But I suggest convincing other PBEM players to participate in online games, to prevent you feel alone wanting to play "mentioned Mods" (while most will be occupied with MPE).

By the way, MSN/Tunggle/Game Ranger are sheer Fail to gather people
Taking back Hamachi "unique" way, I recommended you to look for people at weekends (full activity)

Of course i tried Hamachi at once, it did work 4 years ago when i quit the game, but the new installer does not work for me. It aborts the install sequence.

Also tried the boot.ini fix, but it did not work at all.

So, sadly i cannot join Hamachi until the problem is solved, but i really would like to see those russians playing

Tunggle on the other side, works for me. Yes only 2-3 People in the gamelobby there.

Too bad, i dream of an IRC chat here on the HG site, it would be the best thing in the world to gather some people, also those old veterans would be easier to pick up for me.

I mean, if you type keywords like aow or age of wonders in google for example, you get easily directed to the HG site. New Players should have no trouble find their way to this place.
And no installment requirements of clunky software.

Every little community site has a chatroom, nowdays! We only need host's IP and have some nice dirty talks. :-)

The chatroom suggestion is really good.
But, how would you wait for that when we cant even send Private Messages between us?

So back to reality... hehe. Did you try with Hamachi1? Not the latest ones, but those old Hamachi with brown interface.

I think there wont be problems, only try it. Recommended version: 1.0.3.0

Maybe you downloaded installer for wrong os version, or you have not last updates on your os, hamachi should work.

I have hamachi and I use it every now and then (though rarely). I don't quite like its player limitation though, that is my main beef with it. I like unrestricted lobbies - so I can ramble about things with people like Air and Julliette!

Nah, just kidding. But I still think having a lobby where more people could meet would be nice. IRC would cover this nicely.

Ok, I've set up a chatroom. You can use it browserbased at http://02.chat.mibbit.com/#AoW , or you can join #AoW -room at irc.mibbit.net -network if you got an irc-client (port 6667).

Mibbit supports at least smileys, colour text and automatic translations to different languages, which can be useful. You can also add sound alerts and other things in the "Prefs" menu. (you need to sign up for that though) Visit http://www.mibbit.com if you want additional info about Mibbit, or sign up etc..

SUCCESS!

I connected and chat with Griffith a lot.
If you want to "resurect/animate dead" those ladder games, the moment is today! *Raises flag of victory*

Note: You better stay connected all day, we will soon find out what are the "hot hours" to play. Maybe weekends?

I really really like the idea - IRC rules! =) But what are you gonna use to host games if everyone's behind the NAT? Just a temp room at Hamachi or something like that?

To my surprise... I hosted via normal IP, and Munataros/Griffith/Luna Park could join...
Also since i got defeated... Griffith took autosave and hosted (and all worked fine).

After all without Hamachi, we had some innocent fun =)

Unfortunately, not everyone lives in the normal world - in the place I'm living in ISPs who allow direct incoming connections are quite rare (even in Moscow). Personally I can host games without traversing NAT, but I'm almost the only one of our guys who can do it.
