Idea:

There's an idea to make a patch that will include all great and fitting stuff that already made for this game in mods,
ilb packs, patches and MPE (and if I got that far, a separate installer that will install all that on basic 1.3 AoW:SM) and which will be savegame compatible.

What is already done:

1. UPatch 1.5 Ported to MPE
2. UPatch 1.5 Bugs fixed
3. Stylish heroes library to give UPatch 1.5 heroes a try on any map (27 new models) + Original UPatch 1.5 heroes library
4. MPE Watchtower building ability returned
5. About 600 new creatures made
6. Cartoon mode added (no flags/numbers on worldmap)
7. More than 210 map objects added + (30 objects and 10 effects from UPatch 1.5 restored) (actually more, we've just dropped counting them)
8. Planeswalker heroes library added (about 100 heroes with new models)
9. 2 new maps (by The Groll)


Milestones:

There will be weekly builds, and we will try to make the most possible amount of steps.

1. Adding creatures
2. Making planeswalkers libraries (heroes from Planescape: Torment)
3. Adding Map-objects
4. Making all-in-one installer (1.4+1.5+MPE+1.5.1)
5. Some creatures adjusting (stats, sounds) if needed

Most of the graphics taken from all over the mods and ilb's made by the community by PawelS, Kirky Pikardo, Achilles Reborn, Black Maker and many other heroes of AoW.
Most of the screens made on The Groll's and Swolte's scenarios as a best environment. No such changes made to any of existent maps.

It's a real sad situation. Because I tried to connect to you from the start of the project. I really thought you dropped it, because last message in the thread dated 6 years ago and you stopped answer there (even gif are deleted already). And you told somewhere there you even regret that you started to make an addition. And I had no answers for my emails for 4 months. So with that in mind I took courage in releasing some of them.

I bring you my apologise and ask your permission to have those units we ported (and which was already teased to and downloaded by public). Because we need to bring life to the community to have that positive shock, so maps could be made and people still have interest in AoW. We are not the Brave New World and we can't compare to that different style game so we took only some of them, and also resized and recolored them and form certain lineups around them to look them in line with vanilla AoW. They are treated as treasures and marvels. This project was just an idea to take all good what is left out there and bring final pack which give a final and fruitful spin for this game. The situation was desparate when we started - there were no new messages on the forum for years - we were almost dead.

Also we propose all stuff we made for your mod to use. I know it's not equal to your outstanding units and is already here to use. But still.

We as a community and as a project are in need of your help. And at your mercy and generosity.

I still play 3.2 when I have some free time and I actually made a few changes to the editor version, adding a few broken units and heroes (just for fun).

It is so nice you are here!
One of the best modder with the best mod ever - is back.
BNW is for all the people I know, the best mod ever beside upatch and MPE.
So you can be proud of your work.

So nice you are back.
I had plans to do my own mod one day but this was to much for me.
I am not a modder but a good mapmaker and doing both is to hard for me.
So I push the idea in front of me year after year and the community died in between when the poisoned AoW III came out, AoWSM was dead and it looks it will never raise from the dead again and so with it all the nice mods and players died.

Now tRAIADASOUL dared to make a mod for this dead AoWSM game.
Am idea that is more than mad and a bit silly but he started and after some time and big success he dared to ask some dead people if they like to join his project.

After upatch 1.5 was a failure even when is was not bad, but with errors and much to late released, AoWSM where truly dead and we all died with it.

TRIADASOUL raised me from the dead and some others too.
Step by step his mod becomes more upatch than a others named mod and today, after I was allowed to join months ago, we all call the project upatch 1.6 and with his less passion (He allways want more and this faster) :-) but with a great energy and power for this stuff he implemented more and more content in a way that seams to be impossible fast sometimes.

After I have joined, I started with some projects for upatch 1.6.
The "true Sky ide"a was one of this ideas.

I made those small and big rocks and develop the idea with some very special things you donīt see so far.

When it comes to this point where we really make a true new standard, called upatch 1.6 for a dead game, called AoWSM where no one is alive anymore we dare to plunder other mans work.
So we also go to take units from your mod.
I really hope you are not unhappy with this.
This would be sad but as I see from your latest answer (looks like we both wrote ate the same time) you are okay with it :-)
this makes me happy.

The transport to upatch 1.6 will not make BNW less good or less important for the last of us and maybe to the new ones we catch.

Upatch is kind of official unofficial standard somehow.
Modders do create a new experience while normal players first see upatch and a little later if totally fixed on from this game they want to see more and install a mod, and there is where BNW will always shine no matter if there is upatch with units or content from BNW.
So if we use Kirkys units we donīt rob you or your mod.
We help gather new faces and new interest and this will lead to more players who want more, more mods too.

Hmmm... why you have never completed it?
This I think is because of the same reason why I stop doing upatch and mapmaking on day and go to sleep.

Now tRIADASOUL was able to find the tombstone with my name on it, opened my grave, pull out this old dead body and give it new spirit and energy.
I am happy to be part of this project now.

I will not make my own mod in time.
I realized this.
So I am happy to be graphic maniac again, draw things like this floating rocks, make more new content and new maps but donīt make an own mod because I donīt have the experience and passion and time to do it.

In this upatch 1.6 project I am able to be the best "The Groll" I can give in 2020 and for the next years I think.

Soooo... Kirkly?
If you look in the mirror and see yourself...
Do you think you will make new BNW mod version in time - or ever?
Do you still see Kirky Picardo in this mirror?
Do you have the power, the passion and time today or in next year/s?

If your true answer is "No" what is the next possible step then?
I know you work alone. I know you was the best modder and with BNW you created the best mod for standard SM.

For me I gave all my contend I made to this project and there is more to come.
If it stays on my HD until the HD is rotten or until I am dead the work and contend is lost and wasted - forever.
So if you have contend unfinished maybe you see a light for this stuff coming finally to life and to release.
Otherwise maybe you will never release it.

I think tRIADASOUL would be super happy if you join.
No matter if you give only permission to take units from BNW or much better come and give contend to new life upatch 1.6 or much, much, much better come and draw yourself to back to AoWSM life and join the project.
It is inspiring and funny and you are no longer alone.

Hi Triadasoul_7,

Thank you for the kind words. I accept your apology but there is no real need. I completely understand. As you said it has been years since I last posted here. One of the reasons was I felt it was unfair to people to keep posting teasers and making promises I would not be able to keep. I never removed gifs or screenshots though. That's just a matter of the websites they were uploaded to such as tinypic shutting down. You will see the "this image has been removed" many places where others did the same. It is not unique to the bnw thread.

Also, I wouldn't read too much into one comment I may of made to someone about having regret. Anyone who spends anywhere remotely close to the amount of time I have on all this will likely have some regret about it. Especially if it is still not complete or where they would like it to be. If you are still here, years from now, working on this...well, I imagine you will have some regret too.

I did receive one e-mail from you. After I saw that you had indeed started this project and seemed serious I thought about e-mailing back and offering to contribute a nice amount (but certainly not all) of my stuff. However to go over all that and see what you wanted, how much, what I was willing to let go, putting it all together, etc. etc. would take more time than I wanted to spend and just seemed a big headache for me. I was not aware you already had the new BNW stuff I had sent to a few guys in the community as you never mentioned that. So I never did reply. Sorry about that.

I do agree with you about the game being dead and since UPatch 1.5 was released as an unfinished product, it is good to see some people taking on the task of trying to finish it while adding to it as well. So if it means anything, I do give you permission to use all the stuff by me which you have already included in the last 9-18 download. It looks to be approximately 100 high quality unit/hero ilbs that were never released to the public in my mod or any other. And of course that doesn't even count the vast amount of BNW material which was released that you are welcome to use as well. This seems like a pretty good contribution to me.

To VenomTDA: Thanks mate and very nice work on the units you uploaded. I think you sent me a few of them years ago but there are new ones as well. Some of them look like they are actually from wow and a spnoff of warcraft which name escapes me even though I made quite a few ilbs from the models in it. The ones you did were probably converted to warcraft by someone and you then remade them again to AoW, hehe. I know how that goes!

As for regrets I completely understand what you mean, I call it guilt for being mesmerized with those fantastic worlds for years %). And putting almost months in time into constant production.

We actually stopped adding it yesterday with your message. And added all what was possible in terms of slightly extended vanilla design balance. It's actually 177 out of 640 new models added by the patch 1.6 according to filenames - are BNW content both released and unreleased. They are definitely are of the top quality and the best we could ever have. I still hope we didn't touch the BNW world essence because of its uniqueness and almost HDR colours and shaders. But brought its blood to the project! I hope this will do that positive shock to the community and we dwell that marvelous world a little more! Thank you once more for your vast and invaluable contribution in our project and community!

I as others still hope to see the BNW new version because I saw those great units that are still unreleased and remember those gifs well (I had also regrets for not saving them) and which formed it's unique feeling. And I hope you would return with it soon.

All this images are still things under construction/ in development.
There are some more tricks, for example no longer the grass terrain in the background of the floating rocks visible and some other nice things and tricks.

This are images that show the possibilities but are not final ingame shots but editor shots under development.

But I think it is possible to see and show a part of what I dream of... and people seam to like it as much as I do. :-)

Very nice floating islands, Master Groll. They remind me of a project of mine in RPG Maker... Ah, the good old days!

To Kirky: Yes, I rememeber I sent you a few of them. I wanted to send you some more, but then my pc died. I lost some units and I was kind of mad about it, because I didn't make a backup. Oh, well, lesson learned.
Yes, some units are from WoW, converted by the Warcraft 3 modding community for their projects. They did a really good job.

That last soldier with the spear and shield looks like a god guarding the gates of Heaven.
The Spirit of War embodiement, so to have an opportunity to kick it's arse in person when he destroys your relationship or a city for failed quests.

Regarding units quality in editor - some of the resized units (even downscaled) seems to be blurred in editor (number 2). Ingame they look sharp (picture 3) (on both variants with D3D or without). You can check the actual unit quality in editor by hovering it without placing on the map.

That is not an issue, if you ask me. However, some of the new units have a really large size and they make the game run really slow. At least for me. I am talking about those units that have 40+ megas.

Yep, we experience some problems with the size of the units - because we don't have a tool of downgrading a pallete of the units in batch (from 16bit to 8bit) - if you downgrade pallete, you have to manually choose the pallete for most of the images while importing them into ilb's. So there's a choice about loosing a motivation in sight of that work or just adding the unit with 16bit pallete and 50mb's size of the file. So the help in that field is much appriciated, if somebody knows how to downgrade it and import in batch or even eager to help, we would be extremely glad.

As for PC, I think modern pc's (with 8-16gb of memory, gtx graphics cards and even SSD) can handle that. What configuration are you playing at?

PS: some examples of those heaviwheights (about 100mb), game stores the graphic in bmp, so the bigger unit is the bigger the size, thanks god it removes background from them.

I don't know how those units where made, but I can tell you how I do this. Let's say I'm trying to make an unit from warcraft 3, because it's really easy, since Warcraft 3 model viewer allows you to save animations in pictures.

Step 1: I make 6 folders and I name them like this: Down, DownRight, UpRight, Up, UpLeft, DownLeft.

Step 2: I make sure that the unit that I'm going to transfer to AOW is the right size (the model viewer allows you to adjust the size) and I start exporting pictures for each instance (Atack, Wait, Move etc).

Step 3: I choose from the exported images the ones that will go into making the ILB and I move them in the acording folders (If an animation has 50 frames, I only select like 15 or something. There is no need for more in an AOW unit, with a few exceptions).

Step 4: After I have all the images ready, I select one and use photoshop to shrink the canvas to the right size, to adjust the colors, if needed, and to change the mode to Indexed color with 8Bits/channel. I record the process and the save the new picture in a new folder. After all this is done, you just let phtoshop apply the changes to all the pictures (Automate-Batch).

Step 5: Use ILEd to make the ILB. Batch-New Batch, select the folder with all the pictures, Sprite(08bpp), and grab all. And thats it.

Step 6: Open the new ILB and adjust the animations, so that all start at the same numbers. Ex: Atack - 0-15; 100-115; 200-215 etc. It's easy if you just insert empty spaces, but you can also do this by transfering images from one ILB to another.

And that's how I do units.
The only problem is that the hard drive takes a beating, since your are writing and deleting so many files. But you can do this whith an external drive or an USB. I tried it and it works.

I have an older laptop. I'ts not that good, but I can play a lot of games without problems.

I don't think it damages HDD that much, because nowadays browsing the web makes and deletes those thousands of files daily )

Yep, that worked, but I need to push "enter" each sprite, or make it stuck. I'll experiment more.

UPD: BTW if your AoW laggy - try press "CTRL+R" then "Alt-Tab" twice while in full screen - it might help.

I'm glad it worked. Also, it should not do that, so maybe you need to check or uncheck some boxes, there are a lot of options in there. And you can make photoshop to ignore some actions (like prompting for save as).

Tried it... and it didn't go that well. I lost, if that wasn't too obvious.

The map looks really good, but I'm not yet used to the new units, so I use them poorly. I have to find some free time to give this a real go.

I am playing with the dark elves and I can say it's really hard with all those units running around your town.

More of that - the map is looped with both sides, so you are not in the corner, but a kind in the center of it %).

My first run was also dark elves, I was more or less ok with that running. The main problem was to be an Anarchist in MPE, and really good idea to give the ability which makes attacking spells cost more - so it really force to use enchantments instead. Different playstyle to that I used to.

I'm doing a lot better this time around. I'm on day 40 and doing ok. Not great, but ok.

Seduce was always such a broken skill? I mostly played BNW for the last couple of years, and there it's not a good skill to have. In 1.6 however... you can build an army just by going around and seducing units. Was that the same with the base game? Honestly, I can't remember. I haven't played the base game in years.

I did however encounter a few units that had willpower and tried to use Drain Will... Guess what? The game crashed. Can't remember the units, though. I'll try and write it down if It happens again.

Oh, and I also encountered a problem with Liatos Eldamir and his Spellbook. I tried to place the book on the ground and that only prevented me from accesesing the item window for Liatos. It's easily fixable with a load, but it's anoying. I guess having Spell Casting on an item was not something they tought of, so it might be a problem from the game, not the mod.

Anyway, I'm having a blast. Really nice map and I like the heroes and the units. What I like the most is that I need to think before I go in a battle, because what worked against one stack could not work against another, and I might end up losing soldiers.

If it crashed - please send us the savegame (Tactical Combat save), we will repair. If you remember which unit crashes on Drain Will - please tell I'll fix.

Hi there! I'm back with some more feedback. Sorry it takes so long, but I can only play the game in my free days.

Anyway, I'm on day 100 now and I had several problems with Seduce and Drain Will skils. I can't use those skills with Sinias Beauty. Also, the game crashed once or twice when I used Seduce with the Lady of Pain... but that might have been my mistake, since I tried to seduce a unit that was already seduced. Also, Oris 1 Axe prevented me from taking the loot from the ground (same problem as the one I mentioned with the book). I lost ten items because of that... I didn't save after the fight, so I continued without them. Lucky for me, Ghost, a hero of Miniminchen, got to them before one of my enemies.

I just realized that you can't build level 4 units in your main town. But Siberia is spamming wolfes like there's no tommorow, so I'm guessing there are towns where you can train level 4 units. To be honest, I haven't tried restoring the ruins... that might be the answer.

Lucky for me, Miniminchen was kind enough to trade me the Basilisk spell, so I can finaly have a decent army and go into offensive. I just counquered my second town... after 100 days. Yeah, I barely survived until now, and I lowered the difficulty, because Emperor was to much for me.

Oh, one more thing... That white lady was a step away from becoming a game killer. She had to many immunities. I had to retreat, research a spell that could affect her and only then confront her. It wasn't an easy fight. One of the hardest, to be honest. And it was only one white lady...

Well, I'll continue when I'll get my next free day. I'll let you know if I encounter other problems.

It's a great map so far. I haven't had so much fun with an AOW game in a long time.

Anyway, I'm on day 100 now and I had several problems with Seduce and Drain Will skils. I can't use those skills with Sinias Beauty. Also, the game crashed once or twice when I used Seduce with the Lady of Pain... but that might have been my mistake, since I tried to seduce a unit that was already seduced. Also, Oris 1 Axe prevented me from taking the loot from the ground (same problem as the one I mentioned with the book). I lost ten items because of that... I didn't save after the fight, so I continued without them. Lucky for me, Ghost, a hero of Miniminchen, got to them before one of my enemies.
Senias Beauty crashes fixed - you can just download the second archive and overwrite the MPE mod part on disc C:.

As for Lady of Pain it should work ok - it's somebody else. If you send me the tactical save game - I can take a look.

For now I'm reviewing each day about 10 units (usually more) for those crashes (more than 100 already done) so each day I eleminate some of them, so you can update often (almost each day) - it become more stable and sounds also fixed eventually.

About spellcasting I told Groll, but there's no way of repairing it in the savegame. I hope he would repair it in next map version.

Which one are you talking about - frostling Queen Siberia ? (she died turn one on early versions)
It's a great map so far. I haven't had so much fun with an AOW game in a long time.

Hello Venom

Thank you for this nice ongoing report and for the kind words about the map itself.
As a more more experienced mapmaker that I was in the past I like to play hard, build traps and trick locations and passages and I like to have active and hard to beat AI players with the player on the map.
AoWSM maps are games do have their most thrilling time in most cases only at the beginning of a map. After a while the maps become more boring while the army gets stronger and stronger. I always try to make maps where the player is struggling and still have goals.

This is very interesting for me. Seeing you conquer the new world, seeing you struggle, seeing you conquer city two after a while.

Please go one to report if you like. There are test games running on the map by my son and me and we encounter errors and bugs too.

I will fix the bugs soon.

For me interesting to know it how strong AI players become and in first case if they stay alive the first twenty or thirty or forty days.

About AI players and their power and stupid play...
We all know this so the AIīs can never be a goal and opponent on my difficult maps with traps and strong opponents.
Therefore without getting pushed with all needed things they will fail to be our funny friends in maps.
So the AIs get help. In this map there are no different AI pushup units for different AI player levels like lord, king, imperator... Maybe in a another version of the map if we see they can survive.

About upatch 1.6.
I allways try to use a lot new content and units - of course to chow what is possible and what was made for upatch and mix them with well known units.

We see a lot of strong units and I would like to see more weaker lvl 1 and lvl 2 units because this is where AoWSM shines. This thrilling battles.

About abilities.
Yes.
We have many abilities and this lead us to "recruiting" of all kinds. Seduce, domination, animal takeover and so we produce less in our cities but take more from the map itself plus RC sites units.

So this leads to interesting things.
1. We are always low on gold. Income is low because of only a few income structures. Production is slow because of paying our units day by day. Building in cities becomes less meaningful but in the end if you have lost all the units from the map you will need production power.

2. Because races produce well known units I can show new units better if you "recruit" them on the "move".

It is nice someone likes the work we have done so far.
As tRIADA said make sure you read the map intro. The map is a round world. There are no mapborders on the eastern and western edge of the map.

P.S: Tell me about the frostling queen and her power please and about all other things and AI players.

Lady of Pain works fine now... strange.

White Lady - undead unit with lots of immunities and Seduce. She killed my entire team the first time I fought her, because I had nothing that could hurt her. Once you have something that can hurt her, she's easy.

Siberia is the strongest right now, followed closely by Miniminchen. Claw Taberius is the only one that hit the bucket. Turn 70... or 80, can't remember. Wasn't my doing, it was Miniminchen that guided him to the path of enlightment and all that stuff. Honestly, I wish he was still around, because he managed to keep Siberia at bay. Now that he's gone, I have skirmishes with the frozen queen's army each day. She's a pain and I hate her wolves. But, hey, it makes the game interesting, because it keeps me on my toes.

Maybe you can make morphing units, like in BNW. That way all the low level units would get their chance to shine in the late game.
Yes, you are right, most AOW games are only interesting at the start, when you are weak, but right now I'm not that strong, so even after 100 turns it's still a challenge.

Having the level 4 units disabled was an interesting twist. It really makes you think before you act. And it makes some skills mandatory (Drain Will, Seduce, Dominate). It's something you have to adapt to.

I mostly play BNW (an edited version) and there it's really easy to overpower your oponents. However, I changed a few things, to make the games more interesting, so now it takes a long time to reach level 4 units. Over 100 turns or so. And you almost never get to research all the spells and skills, unless you play 200 turns or have a huge mana income. Like you guys, I tried to make the game more enjoyable by making it more chalenging. Strugling to survive the first 50 or so turns with only level 1 or 2 units it's the best game experience. And when you finaly get to promote one of your units, after so many batles, it's a nice fealing. However, when you reach level 4 units, it's game over so that is still a problem. I was thinking now, after playing your map, to remove level 4 units from towns, so you can only get them from a few recruitment sites. But that would require some tinkering with the spells, too. And a lot of testing... and I don't have time for that. Still, it's a nice idea and I might try it one day.

Triada Soul's War Journal

Day 101, Horlond Guor has emerged from underground, threatening the city of Acronyte Kryptonite. Our forces, gathered close to the city, managed to take him out, but our scouts report a massive army moving underground. It is clear to me now that Siberia is trowing at us all her forces.

Day 103, Sinias Beauty discovered a scouting party close to the entrance of the caves. Siberia's army is packed with wolves and yetis. This will be a difficult battle.

Day 105, Sinias Beauty's squad managed to ambush some yetis that strayed away from the main group. After killing them, she had to retreat, as the wolves where already on her trail.

Day 108, Siberia's forces surrounded the city of Acronyte Kryptonite and lunched a devastating attack. They outnumbered us 2 to one, but our 3 champions have faced death before and they were not afraid to face it again. As dawn approached, the battlefield turned red and the bodies of the dead piled up. The battle was finally over, and the only survivors were the 3 champions that served our nation from the beginning: Sinias Beauty, Kiar Sohn and Liatos Eldamir. The town is saved... for now.

Day 110, The dwarven people gathered their dead and prepared them for the afterlife. Sinias Beauty has taken upon herself to kill the frozen queen, so I sent her new recruits.

Day 114, More wolves have emerged from underground, but Sinias Beauty disposed of them quickly. She gathered the new recruits under her banner and she is now preparing to shift the tides of war. Unlike Napoleon, she packed some winter coats and is ready to face the harshest conditions.

Day 119, Our armies have finally reached the gates of Siberia's stronghold. The frozen queen is better prepared then we thought. Her troops outnumber us 4 to 1, but there is no turning back. It's all or nothing.

Day 120, Sinias Beauty has taken the gate and is now preparing the troop for the battles that will decide the fate of our nation.

Day 124, We managed to defend against four attacks so far without any major loses. The he time has come, the winter queen must fall.

Day 128, After killing one more squad of yetis and wolves, Sinias' army passed a town that was barely defended by a few soldiers and a snow witch. She could conquer it easy, but decided that it was not worth the effort.

Day 132, The first tower fell in less than a minute, the second one however... The battle was long and tiresome. Many of our soldiers died before breaching the gates and many more died afterwards. The winter queen put up a good fight, but in the end she had to accept her defeat. Sinias Beauty shattered her frozen heart and sent her in the afterlife. We won... and yet, it feels like we lost. The gods have abandoned us and madness has taken over the minds of the soldiers. They are now fighting among themselves... How is this possible?

Well, I am now on turn 160, but the fun is over, mostly because of that stupid Nature Spirit. I hate her. I lost all my army because of her, and my heroes would become rebellious if it weren't for the basilisks. It's not this mod's fault, it happened to me before in the base game. Everything goes smooth, and then suddenly your own army turns against you. It's stupid and I hate it. It's the reason why I never build Nature Shrines.

Anyway, I had fun with this map. I'm almost done, I just have to find the main city of Sancturia Lich, kill him and I'm all done. I have allied victory enabled.
