...and I do not blame you. I see more and more posts and emails from people trying to figure out what is going on and I encourage all to ask these questions instead of giving up. It's really not that hard. Also, feel free to link people to this thread in case of questions.

What you need on this site

To keep it very simple.
REQUIRED I: Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic
You need the game Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic. This is not to be confused with AoWII-TWT (the Wizards Throne). AoW-sm was released a year after TWT and considered superior in almost all respects. There are almost no people playing AoW-TWT.

REQUIRED II: Unofficial Patch version 1.4.
This is a general patch for the game. If you install this, you will have the least problems with compatibility and you are good to go for everything.

Get it here

- This file first installs the official patch v1.3. released by Triumph Studios. Then it will install v1.4 content that adds more fixes, content, and improvements.
- If for some reason you want to play with the official v1.3 rules, you can always select that from the setup. They are added as a mod.
- There is almost no reasonable reason NOT to install this file. It does not take away any possibilities. You can do anything that you were doing before, you can just do more...
- You NEED this file to: play recent mods, do multi-player pbem and online Gamespy (because you need mods that require v1.4). and most importantly, to play maps uploaded on this site.

The unofficial patch v1.4 is also called: v1.4, upatch, upatch.1.4, patch14, or unofficial patch.

The sources of the confusion

- Some people like to call the unofficial patch v1.4 a mod. There are good reasons for that but it is very confusing, especially for newcomers, as it doesn't function like a mod. For practical reasons, the unofficial patch is called a patch and not a mod.

- Mods can be found in the Mods Downloads Section and there are a lot. When the unofficial patch v1.4 came out, mods adapted to this and there were newer versions.

Brass1.4
Arda1.3
The v1.4's, and v1.3's refer to versions of the MOD and have NOTHING to do with a required version of (un)official patches. You still need the unofficial patch to play some of these mods.

- To add to the confusion...
Dwiggs1.4 mod has had some mistakes and The Stranger has now released a patch FOR the mod. This patch is called: patch_14. Of course, this is a patch FOR a mod, and not for the game. You can see why some people get confused.

Also dwiggs 1.4 patch is the latest. Any dwiggs of a higher number is a earlier version, before dwiggs 1.4 there was 4.5 (good mod stranger, bad naming system

)

The 1.4 was suppose to indicate it needs 1.4 installed to work. Instead it just makes it wrongly sound like a earlier version.

Only reason I can imagine not to install such things is they add up in space on HDD, well and download & install time.

Two Questions.

After running AOWSetup.exe and checking the box that says use custom resource only v1.3 appears, should v1.4 also appear? Or should I leave it unchecked to use v1.4?

If you ran UPatch 1.4 twice (once to install patch 1.3 and then again to install 1.4) you should see (Default) which is 1.4 and also see 1.3 as an option.

Well...

I'd been thinking for a while that getting the game on Steam might not have been the best move, but here's an additional reason - it doesn't seem to be compatible with 1.4. Tried installing it, and from that point on it just crashed every time I tried to run the game until I blew it away and reinstalled from the library.

Probably not worth worrying overmuch for 1.4 (although if there is an existing fix or workaround, I'd be interested in hearing... but I'll be backing up the working install first this time!) but it might be worth considering for 1.5 as that rolls around.

EDIT: For the record and future reference, the GOG version is compatible with 1.4 on the same computer.

Vis a vis Steam, I got it to work.

You need to locate the steam directory (c/programfiles/steam/steamapps/common/aowsm) and manually put the mod files in there, otherwise the mod files look for c/programfiles/aowsm which doesn't exist, and confuses everything.

It took me a while to figure it out but once you do that, it's the same as if it were a normal install.

But yeah, steam is fiddly (on the other hand I have managed ot lose or misplace or scratch all my hard copies of the AoW series, so it does have its uses).

Take an old, dirty, hungry, mangy, sick and wet dog and feed him and wash him and nurse him back to health, and he will never turn on you and bite you.

This is how man and dog differ.
