Note: This thread is meant to provide news about the progress of the v1.5 project. Suggestions are welcome, although more threads will be made in the future to make the information flow more fluent.
If at all possible, keep the thread a summary of ideas with a short explanation. Try and keep discussion on a topic minimal and make a thread and link to it, if you think your topic is up for discussion. Remember that suggestions are meant as a patch and the aim is wide acceptance by the AoW-community. This means that changes must be in line and compatible with existing maps and campaigns. In addition, gameplay changes should take Online, Play by Email and Single Player into account. This is different from a mod that is able to change large gaming concepts or is made for whomever is interested.



PLAN FOR UNOFFICIAL PATCH: VERSION 1.5



WHY DEVELOP AN UNOFFICIAL PATCH V1.5?
- To keep interest in Age of Wonders alive!!
- To keep improving aspects of the game.
- To keep the game interesting and dynamic on a competitive level.
- To dramatically improve the possibilities for mapmakers and modders.
- To enhance community involvement.

HOW CAN I HELP?
The development forums are here and everyone who wants to can sign up and contribute! Core members will be admitted by invitation only.

WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED?

Since the project isn't a financially sponsored or paid endeavour, we have no strict deadline. The patch will not be a rushed product and the necessary time will be taken to fix issues and thoroughly test balance changes. Delays are possible and may take as long as months.

EXPECTED RELEASE DATE:
Currrently undetermined

WHAT IS POSSIBLE?
The teammembers will consist of very able people in the modding/playing/mapmaking/writing world that are capable of working in teams. What is possible will largely depend on the qualities of the teammembers and rules we allow ourselves to break. Decisions regarding some of these issues, as you may understand, are not allowed to be discussed in public on these forums. Please email me at swolte at gmail dot com with questions regarding copyright, hacks, etc...

In terms of additions to the game, v1.5 will be much bolder than v1.4 was.

********************WHAT IS PLANNED SO FAR?********************
This list may be expanded.

CAMPAIGN + Campaign Editor (35% complete)
The campaign will consist out of many linked maps replacing the old campaign (yes, you will be able to switch back and forth). The basic campaign structure therefore is linear but the internal design will allow for as much (perhaps even more than expected...) freedom.
We'll also attempt a campaign editor that actually works so users can make campaigns themselves a lot easier


MORE BUGFIXES (80% complete)

Fixes

RACIAL BOATS/PIONEERS/MACHINES (55% complete)
v1.5 will be a bit bolder in the sense that we will add and replace some existing units. Perhaps only with a couple of races.
- Racial Boats
- Racial Machines
- Racial Pioneers
- Extra Builder unit at Mastery Guild for some Constructor races.


This picture shows Bilge rats (the new Goblin Transport 'boat') transporting nasty Goblins and Kobolds to the human wharf. The peasants and defending pikeman are fleeing for safety towards the old mining tunnel.

NEW HEROES FOR CLASS (80% complete)
This will be the biggest change planned as it will impact gameplay as well as game feel. The intention is to replace existing hero classes with unique graphics (keeping some, but replacing most...). We have decided to go for it, in full force.

ADDITIONAL WIZARDS and ITEMS. (85% complete)
Some new items and Wizards will be added to the standard library. This means that these can now also show up in the Random Map Generator.

NEW MAPS. (30% complete)
These are maps that will come with the patch. They will show some of the new editor features that will otherwise not be available when playing the game.


This picture shows more water based tiles and units. The whirlpool can suck in even the giant seamonster. On land, there is a fortress holding many magical creatures. and a Seer sees trouble from afar, when a Spiked Maw is flinching its three large, and deadly spikes on his back

MORE NEW UNITS/STRUCTURES/TERRAIN. (80% complete)
Especially mapmakers and single-players will be treated the most with these additions. None of the existing possibilities will be altered or changed. These can be considered as bonuses and have no effect on playing existing maps. Mapmakers can add them at will, the advantage is that a lot of work by fans and hidden opportunities of mapmakers will now be directed supported and easily accessible by everyone.
- New units will also now be available in standard structures (as defenders or recruits), as spirit rewards/infidels.

NEW RACES + RACE SWITCHER (~ temporarily stopped ~)
Another ambitious project is the race switcher. This utility will let you play new races (also in rmg) at the cost of switching one.
Some new races planned:
- Demons
- Gnomes
- Beast
- Fairy
- Lizard

This will be the last priority. If the patch's release is delayed too much, we may opt to do this as a future add-on.

NOTES
- This patch will be larger in size than the previous one. For v1.4, size was a restriction for certain additions and for v1.5 we're gonna let that go completely. Especially now that we are adding movies to the Campaign, hitting 500 MB is possible.

Hi, new here but a seasoned AoW:Sm player. Without going through 80-odd pages, has anyone suggested allowing the item forge to produce items with 4 properties? Perhaps only for those abilities that have four levels, such as Leadership, Vision etc?

Now am working on huge map for patch so if there i some additions or bugs that need to be fixed. Ok, it took me 10 minutes to locate that fancy medieval button I forgot my question. Where do you guys meets and trade ip to play aows 1.4 + mod with Hamachi ? And I'm happy this game is not dead, and aow 3 is nice but there is not enough races and units. And units cannot miss.
So how do we play ? what mod aows build im supposed to have ready at all time if I want to play ?

@Swolte: Not long ago you estimated the release to be beginning of 2015. Can you please give us an update now? Since you already worked on finalizing the package it should be nearly done, right? What is missing now, can someone help?

The Groll / Swolte, is any progress or activity happening behind the scenes?

The last time I was losing hope, The Groll and Swolte started some activity and assured folks that the project would be released in some form. Is that still the case or is this thing dead? It gets disheartening to keep checking back here and see no activity for months at a time.
Any update would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hello and sorry for not responding to your bumps.

I still look at this page whenever I open my browser and it is locked to my browser all the time. No I idea why I missed to answer earlier.
I think it was in January when I talked to Swolte and bumped, pleased and begged him again to release whatever he have so far because the team is dead - afaik.
He said he will then ask PawelS to make the installer and then release the unfinished or lets better or more friendly say the untested upatch.
That is what I know so far.
Swolte traveled from one location to another and changed his life a lot during the last months and so I understand all the loitering with the upatch.
But I still think it will come one soon day.
I really hope so.
To be honest I abandoned AoWSM myself since some time.
But my little son still plays it and if he gets a little better I will step in again and play with him together.
I was not the biggest part in the devs team during the second upatch project.
I can´t force Swolte or PawelS and can´t release it myself because Swolte have the files and knowledge to do this together with PawelS.
I fear for the project but will not accept myself to loose in this fight and loose the unfinished upatch.

Let me tell you a small story please to explain my hopes for upatch - it is quiet enough here to be off topic ehh? Yea! To bad.

Once I made a map called Marlenes Laughter.
It was such a monster of a map and it is still full of bugs.
During the making I suffer... In real life as in the development of the map and I came to the point where I want to leave it down - unfinished. It raped me somehow and it ruined my real life these days and at some point I thought I should stop and end it. And I do so.
When my real life becomes more happier again I doubt that I should or could start to work on it again. After a while I though I should do it because it was a part of my life and every part should be ended somehow and so I finished the monster and released it to the world.
Some fans really liked it a lot while other suffer because the map crashed the game sometimes because it is to big to handle for the game itself or because it have to many scripted event bugs inside.
Nevertheless! It was alive.
It must be done and it was done even when it was very had to do in between and again in the end.

I have abandoned AoWSM now but if upatch is released I will come back and finish my map I once made for this project to show the power of this new and for sure last upatch.
The map is in a good part done, maybe 80% of mapdesign when it comes to landscape painting but very less completed when it comes to event scripting and Technics. It was made in the wish to create a nice looking MP map that can be played in MP or SP so story and event scripting is not that important as it was in most of my othe maps.
And there are some specials inside that are only possible with some new upatch abilities.
I always´want to make this map with this technics. Really cool - and when I think of it I want to start working on it again but I need to knowlegde it can be played in the new upatch because it is only made for this patch.
That was a the little story and that is why I still hope for the upatch release.


So my hope for the upatch project is... still alive.

When some men made something good they should not suffer even when they loss in between and should release the stuff to the world even when they are not really happy with the outcome.

I really really really understand all you fans are discouraged, a little bit angry but in most cases maybe sad and disappointed in us the devs of upatch and you are right to do so.

I will write Swolte and PawelS an email right after I finish this post and I please you to hope the best like I still do and check back here from time to time.
Maybe Swolte and PawelS will come here to make a post and maybe they have some good news.

Thanks for the story, Groll I really liked your maps btw. Also thanks for writing those emails.

For me it is a similar situation. I did not play SM for 2 years or more years, alyways telling myself "well the patch is supposed to come out soon, I just wait for that so I have a reason to get more into SM again". I also still have unfinished map projects. Maybe I finish and release them after the patch comes out to give something back to the community.
So I think it is the same for many: They may have stopped playing, but just wait for the patch to come out to get back in . It could breathe new life into the SM community.

I can of course understand the situation of Swolte and Pawel. But please, just release the project even if its not finished. The mapmakers will still make great use of the new stuff. I think you will be happy with that heavy burden finally off from your shoulders. And the other dev members who put work into the project deserve it aswell I guess.

Groll, thank you very much again for your efforts in attempting to keep this project alive. This is the second time I have lost hope in this release due to the obvious inactivity here, and the second time you have been able to renew that hope by attempting to get communication flowing. I will continue to check back and see if there has been any progress, hopefully Swolte and PawelS will find the time to finish putting there components together and get this out the door in some form. Good to be back!

So yes, we were frustratingly close to a release last year and we have now lost that momentum. As I mentioned, the patch is pretty much done and only needs a thorough round of checking and a professional installer. Unfortunately, getting back into all of this will take us some time.

I'll be honest in saying there's no way this will be done in the summer. I have a whole lab to set up, a house to build, and too many obligatory travels (lucky all good things...). Realistically, October-December this year seems very feasible. I am still moving a task reminder every week so this is definitely not off my mind.

Great, thanks for the reply Swolte! Would be cool if you can come in here from time to time and post what's up. Even if it's just a "no time for it this month", but then we at least know that it was not abandoned

Also you say testing is required. Well maybe you should just skip that at this point and release what you have without? I think the map makers and modders can figure the stuff out if problems arise.

Anyway, good luck with your lab and your house
