Note: This thread is meant to provide news about the progress of the v1.5 project. Suggestions are welcome, although more threads will be made in the future to make the information flow more fluent.
If at all possible, keep the thread a summary of ideas with a short explanation. Try and keep discussion on a topic minimal and make a thread and link to it, if you think your topic is up for discussion. Remember that suggestions are meant as a patch and the aim is wide acceptance by the AoW-community. This means that changes must be in line and compatible with existing maps and campaigns. In addition, gameplay changes should take Online, Play by Email and Single Player into account. This is different from a mod that is able to change large gaming concepts or is made for whomever is interested.



PLAN FOR UNOFFICIAL PATCH: VERSION 1.5



WHY DEVELOP AN UNOFFICIAL PATCH V1.5?
- To keep interest in Age of Wonders alive!!
- To keep improving aspects of the game.
- To keep the game interesting and dynamic on a competitive level.
- To dramatically improve the possibilities for mapmakers and modders.
- To enhance community involvement.

HOW CAN I HELP?
The development forums are here and everyone who wants to can sign up and contribute! Core members will be admitted by invitation only.

WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED?

Since the project isn't a financially sponsored or paid endeavour, we have no strict deadline. The patch will not be a rushed product and the necessary time will be taken to fix issues and thoroughly test balance changes. Delays are possible and may take as long as months.

EXPECTED RELEASE DATE:
Currrently undetermined

WHAT IS POSSIBLE?
The teammembers will consist of very able people in the modding/playing/mapmaking/writing world that are capable of working in teams. What is possible will largely depend on the qualities of the teammembers and rules we allow ourselves to break. Decisions regarding some of these issues, as you may understand, are not allowed to be discussed in public on these forums. Please email me at swolte at gmail dot com with questions regarding copyright, hacks, etc...

In terms of additions to the game, v1.5 will be much bolder than v1.4 was.

********************WHAT IS PLANNED SO FAR?********************
This list may be expanded.

CAMPAIGN + Campaign Editor (35% complete)
The campaign will consist out of many linked maps replacing the old campaign (yes, you will be able to switch back and forth). The basic campaign structure therefore is linear but the internal design will allow for as much (perhaps even more than expected...) freedom.
We'll also attempt a campaign editor that actually works so users can make campaigns themselves a lot easier


MORE BUGFIXES (80% complete)

Fixes

RACIAL BOATS/PIONEERS/MACHINES (55% complete)
v1.5 will be a bit bolder in the sense that we will add and replace some existing units. Perhaps only with a couple of races.
- Racial Boats
- Racial Machines
- Racial Pioneers
- Extra Builder unit at Mastery Guild for some Constructor races.


This picture shows Bilge rats (the new Goblin Transport 'boat') transporting nasty Goblins and Kobolds to the human wharf. The peasants and defending pikeman are fleeing for safety towards the old mining tunnel.

NEW HEROES FOR CLASS (80% complete)
This will be the biggest change planned as it will impact gameplay as well as game feel. The intention is to replace existing hero classes with unique graphics (keeping some, but replacing most...). We have decided to go for it, in full force.
Discussion here.

ADDITIONAL WIZARDS and ITEMS. (85% complete)
Some new items and Wizards will be added to the standard library. This means that these can now also show up in the Random Map Generator.

NEW MAPS. (30% complete)
These are maps that will come with the patch. They will show some of the new editor features that will otherwise not be available when playing the game.


This picture shows more water based tiles and units. The whirlpool can suck in even the giant seamonster. On land, there is a fortress holding many magical creatures. and a Seer sees trouble from afar, when a Spiked Maw is flinching its three large, and deadly spikes on his back

MORE NEW UNITS/STRUCTURES/TERRAIN. (80% complete)
Especially mapmakers and single-players will be treated the most with these additions. None of the existing possibilities will be altered or changed. These can be considered as bonuses and have no effect on playing existing maps. Mapmakers can add them at will, the advantage is that a lot of work by fans and hidden opportunities of mapmakers will now be directed supported and easily accessible by everyone.
- New units will also now be available in standard structures (as defenders or recruits), as spirit rewards/infidels.

NEW RACES + RACE SWITCHER (~ temporarily stopped ~)
Another ambitious project is the race switcher. This utility will let you play new races (also in rmg) at the cost of switching one.
Some new races planned:
- Demons
- Gnomes
- Beast
- Fairy
- Lizard

This will be the last priority. If the patch's release is delayed too much, we may opt to do this as a future add-on.

One thing for the baby thing at common.
Do you have seen LotR? Of course. Then you know that Orcs have no babys. Read Tolkien to find it out or watch the movie. Orcs are made from unholy earth. Morgoth made the Orcs from degenerated and bedevilled elven warriors. therefore Orcs have long ears too. What I wnat to say is that Orcs donīt have "babys" and no youth too.

Well, in the film it's different than in Tolkien works, at least as far as I am concerned... I mean, in the ,,Silmarillion" it somewhere says that Orcs ,,breeded same way as other children of Iluvatar", that is, they reproduced ,,normally", and therefore had children (sorry if the quote is incorrect , I don't have English version of the book, so this quotation is but a mere translation of that part in Polish transaltion, Beren with his infinite knowldege about LotR world should know whether I'm right or muttering nonsense )
Are there (besides from Shadowrun FS Books) orc womans?

Yes they do, at least in AoW universe. In AoW1, among the heroes that came with game, the was even an Orcish heroine Fakana Poisoner (Someone post a screnshoot, please). Also note this part of Orc race description from AoW1 campaign:
Orcs are loathsome, foul creatures, living for the taste of blood. Their strength is unparalleled, but they are stubborn servants hearkening to carnal lusts.Even Orc women may serve as ferocious fighters.

first of all i havnt had time to read the whole thread ill try to later and if i have any ideas ill throw them out there its to late right now but what i wanted to say is the racial pioneers look great both the frostling and the elf one im assuming you have all the other ones but the syron one decided and i cant wait to see your great work im glad i found this place gave me a renewed interest in AOW.

i dont know about the syrons but the draconians maybe a red or green pulled by a slither or a couple small hatchlings just an idea

Good idea, yet, we wanted to do something completely different. I mean, using eggs, or something. I guess the plan is to 'rid' this race of machines all together.

Ideally I personally would like a giant turtle carrying eggs on his back! It might even be worth animating eggs in ourselves (lots of work, but if we can find someone crazy enough...).

How about combining one of the green eggs from the terrain tiles with that hero in Dwiggs carried around by little lizards?

What if they just carry some kind of tent, taken from city structires? But those lizard-carriers are smart and coool!

Another idea is to have the Shadow Demon caravan be carried by a Lightning Catcher, or another small Syron unit. To emphasise the Syrons enslavement by the demons?
Ofcourse that's just extra work for a caravan that's already done. :P

It's like watching a flock of clown-like apes trying to navigate a ship, even though the ship has in fact been stranded on some kind of reef for about 7 years and none of the apes have noticed it yet. -Drahnier on OD moderation.

oh ok wasnt sure waht you wanted eggs carried by something would look great and be very oringinal

I just read the entire thread the past 2 days and i noticed the race converter thing. Do you still think that will be in it cause overthe weekend i found an old paper with some new races detailed on it by me and a friend and it would be nice if it was possible to use

Both look nice but I think the two hourses are better. Can this pioneer swim then because the hourses can swim? then the wagon need to be more like a ship. Maybe you can take the eggs you want to use from the draconian city structures

Is it feasible to make city gates two hexes wide, instead of one hex wide? Possibly even go from one hex to two hexes wide, depending on whether it is an outpost/village or town/city?

That was the 'easy' solution, but I think we should try to go for a race without any machines/wagons, etc... something untraditional!
Like the Groll mentions, with some imagination, it should be able to swim. Lizards carrying a bunch of eggs could, this could not!

Suggestions for the waggon
If you want to remove the wagon totaly, maybe you can use the dragonturtle that came with upatch 1.4 (recolor it, cut the head and the rudders off) and you have a nice swimming wagon.
Or take the basilisk unit and cut off head and legs for a nice swimming wagon that matches with the two swimming hourses you have shown us in your picture.
If you then maybe put some eggs from the draconian city structures on it, you have a perfect swimming draconian pioneer. I can imagin how much work it is, sorry, but maybe not to much, if you use one of this creatures.

ya i understand making what yall are talking about would look much better and grolls idea is great.

This race converter has made me think about it alot lol i bet by the end of next weekend ill have 15 races and units for all of them on paper that i most likely will never actually figure out how to make lol ohwell its still fun to think

I vote for slithers (the other version looks like a slave labor was in use )
And i like the idea of non-machine draconians. Just the eggs are a bit awkward and difficult to pull i guess. So i propose to leave the wheels untouched and put a huge egg on them.

So how will be skills and spells planned? Skills should cost 500 all, except for enchanter, not sure was it like that in 1.4. Spell changes can be copied in MP mod . BTW, what can take over a year to make upatch 1.5 with 10 ppl?

Hah, well the skills will be an issue for the balance team but I don't expect much changes.

Not all skills are equally strong for research when the game has started, even depending on strategy. We also don't want people to pick the same skills all the time, as was happening in online gaming before v1.4., for example. Diversity and strategic choice would be the challenge.

We're working on a Gnome race now. They will be very machine-oriented. Any ideas are welcome. I'll post a picture if I have time later today!

wow new race, do it replace some old one? and yes seeing constructor/explorer pacifist was too common, though expander is better and almost as good than constructor.

Yes, those are the top ones, although expander became more important with the 'new' outpost tactics in online gaming (something we can discourage a bit by increasing population needs, or money).

V1.4 already helped Pacificst by having more medal upgrades and making heroes stronger. Explorer is still extremely powerful (and even more so in pbem, or against AI), and the only way to limit that is to have it cost more slots, or exclude another powerful Skill.
Constructor is similar. It's effects are even stronger in custom maps with a lot of cities.

There is a race-switcher in the planning that allows you to easily switch a race with another/new one. No extra races, unfortunately. Too many hardcoded issues related with that.

Well, its basically on availability. We currently have a beast race (pictures were released a while back). I guess a Demon and Fairy race wouldn't be too hard as well (Heavily inspired on Dwiggs). Of course, there is a Lizard race (units already in v1.4).

We'll be having our hand full on these for a while, but any ideas are welcome.
