Note: This thread is meant to provide news about the progress of the v1.5 project. Suggestions are welcome, although more threads will be made in the future to make the information flow more fluent.
If at all possible, keep the thread a summary of ideas with a short explanation. Try and keep discussion on a topic minimal and make a thread and link to it, if you think your topic is up for discussion. Remember that suggestions are meant as a patch and the aim is wide acceptance by the AoW-community. This means that changes must be in line and compatible with existing maps and campaigns. In addition, gameplay changes should take Online, Play by Email and Single Player into account. This is different from a mod that is able to change large gaming concepts or is made for whomever is interested.



PLAN FOR UNOFFICIAL PATCH: VERSION 1.5



WHY DEVELOP AN UNOFFICIAL PATCH V1.5?
- To keep interest in Age of Wonders alive!!
- To keep improving aspects of the game.
- To keep the game interesting and dynamic on a competitive level.
- To dramatically improve the possibilities for mapmakers and modders.
- To enhance community involvement.

HOW CAN I HELP?
The development forums are here and everyone who wants to can sign up and contribute! Core members will be admitted by invitation only.

WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED?

Since the project isn't a financially sponsored or paid endeavour, we have no strict deadline. The patch will not be a rushed product and the necessary time will be taken to fix issues and thoroughly test balance changes. Delays are possible and may take as long as months.

EXPECTED RELEASE DATE:
Currrently undetermined

WHAT IS POSSIBLE?
The teammembers will consist of very able people in the modding/playing/mapmaking/writing world that are capable of working in teams. What is possible will largely depend on the qualities of the teammembers and rules we allow ourselves to break. Decisions regarding some of these issues, as you may understand, are not allowed to be discussed in public on these forums. Please email me at swolte at gmail dot com with questions regarding copyright, hacks, etc...

In terms of additions to the game, v1.5 will be much bolder than v1.4 was.

********************WHAT IS PLANNED SO FAR?********************
This list may be expanded.

CAMPAIGN + Campaign Editor (35% complete)
The campaign will consist out of many linked maps replacing the old campaign (yes, you will be able to switch back and forth). The basic campaign structure therefore is linear but the internal design will allow for as much (perhaps even more than expected...) freedom.
We'll also attempt a campaign editor that actually works so users can make campaigns themselves a lot easier


MORE BUGFIXES (80% complete)

Fixes

RACIAL BOATS/PIONEERS/MACHINES (55% complete)
v1.5 will be a bit bolder in the sense that we will add and replace some existing units. Perhaps only with a couple of races.
- Racial Boats
- Racial Machines
- Racial Pioneers
- Extra Builder unit at Mastery Guild for some Constructor races.


This picture shows Bilge rats (the new Goblin Transport 'boat') transporting nasty Goblins and Kobolds to the human wharf. The peasants and defending pikeman are fleeing for safety towards the old mining tunnel.

NEW HEROES FOR CLASS (80% complete)
This will be the biggest change planned as it will impact gameplay as well as game feel. The intention is to replace existing hero classes with unique graphics (keeping some, but replacing most...). We have decided to go for it, in full force.

ADDITIONAL WIZARDS and ITEMS. (85% complete)
Some new items and Wizards will be added to the standard library. This means that these can now also show up in the Random Map Generator.

NEW MAPS. (30% complete)
These are maps that will come with the patch. They will show some of the new editor features that will otherwise not be available when playing the game.


This picture shows more water based tiles and units. The whirlpool can suck in even the giant seamonster. On land, there is a fortress holding many magical creatures. and a Seer sees trouble from afar, when a Spiked Maw is flinching its three large, and deadly spikes on his back

MORE NEW UNITS/STRUCTURES/TERRAIN. (80% complete)
Especially mapmakers and single-players will be treated the most with these additions. None of the existing possibilities will be altered or changed. These can be considered as bonuses and have no effect on playing existing maps. Mapmakers can add them at will, the advantage is that a lot of work by fans and hidden opportunities of mapmakers will now be directed supported and easily accessible by everyone.
- New units will also now be available in standard structures (as defenders or recruits), as spirit rewards/infidels.

NEW RACES + RACE SWITCHER (~ temporarily stopped ~)
Another ambitious project is the race switcher. This utility will let you play new races (also in rmg) at the cost of switching one.
Some new races planned:
- Demons
- Gnomes
- Beast
- Fairy
- Lizard

This will be the last priority. If the patch's release is delayed too much, we may opt to do this as a future add-on.

- This patch will be larger in size than the previous one. For v1.4, size was a restriction for certain additions and for v1.5 we're gonna let that go completely. Especially now that we are adding movies to the Campaign, hitting 500 MB is possible.

Im not sure if i am right, but with installer is something wrong or with my computer. I don see any new updated stuff. and still i got 1,4 version of the game.I re-Installed several times whole game with all patches and same effect every time.

@BeastFeast: It seems we forgot to change the text that appears on the title screen, so it still says "UPatch 1.4". You should see new stuff in the editor when you run it without custom resources enabled, are you sure you don't see it?

Anyone else has problems with the installer?

And to answer your previous question that I overlooked: I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think any of the slot numbers have changed compared to the workbuilds.

Newbie question:
Will the 1.5 contents be auto-generated on the map unless specific resources were assigned? Something like 1.5 guards when a mine's guards was set to weak/average/strong?

@ Selither: (Hopefully I'll explain this right - 1st time for everything...)

1st download and unpack the upatch into your AOWSM location.

2nd open the AOWSM setup program

3rd (And this is the IMPORTANT step) make sure "blood" is checked (I'd be curious to know if ANYONE has ever unchecked the "blood" box out of actual squeamishness; I mean, it's a game where everyone gets hacked on with choppy, choppy weapons, does leaving the blood out really make it seem like hugs and rainbows?)(note to next upatch team - have an option to replace blood with rainbows. 'cuz how awesome would that be?)

4th In the "custom resources" box make sure (Default) is selected. When you close the setup screen and load the game it should now automatically be in 1.5 mode. If you really want to make sure open the game and load one of the new 1.5 maps. You should see some of the new 1.5 structures.

Sorry for the lateness of my response, you've probably already figured this out, but at least I got to make that rainbows joke.

Wahoo! It's finally out, I can't believe it

I would like to thank all of you, that spend a lot of
time and effort to realise this great project!

Now I have to rework "Herbststurm"-map, at the
moment I am testing some of the new terrain features
that are looking great so far (I am planning not to
overload the map but keep the "natural" design).

Hi,
I know that after installing the UPatch v1.5 when I load the game the start screen shows again the wrong "UPatch 1.4 / Version: 1.30.0.2614".
Since I usually like to frequently mod the standard recources, does anyone here knows how to edit that string?
I would like to start the game and know which custom resource is currently in use, and I also would like that the UPatch v1.5 is showing the correct string... thank you!

I have some little bugs:
- spell rot doesn't give exp
- orc shamane and necromancer won't attack black angels with there black bolts.
- some problem with demon bombard. He doesn't use his skill, but i mean, in the past, they attack flying units.

It's normal, dark angels are immune to death. So, black bolts wich cause only death magic are inneficients.

Other question: is there a picture to see all skills, that a class like rogue or warrior can get?

Coming in a bit late on this, but

- the Morph ability means that it is possible in practice to give all units an arbitrary number of experience levels, right? By having the following scheme:

Spearman, morphs at Gold into
Rank1_Spearman (not produceable), morphs at Gold into
Rank2_Spearman, etc.

Of course, this means that units should gain perks at a somewhat slower speed through leveling; maybe even at the slow speed of Heroes. The graphics for this would be quite trivial: Rank1_Spearman has the same graphics as Spearman plus an extra chevron for experience, located next to the medal spot. (Is it possible to change the medal graphic? We could make a gold chevron for rank and a silver chevron for medal, since with this scheme units would very seldom stay at gold medal).

The drawback is that this makes a large number of in-game units, but I gather from the discussion on this patch that this is not too much of a problem. (And, as long as we are cloning graphics, I much prefer this scheme to recolored units, which look quite stupid IMHO).

The advantage of this is that level-1 units could eventually (after a *long* time) level up to something competitive with level-4 units (or maybe even, in some cases, an actual level-4 — although different from the racial produced level4 in most cases, I cannot imagine a Halberdier progressing to an Air Galley!). This would make producing level 1 units (and then nurturing them) an interesting alternative to rushing for high level units.

- Tactical combat maps. Well, TC could be even more tactical with a creative use of terrain. I would definitely like to see maps with more elevation differences. I don't know how works, in TC, the fact that arrows can go one-way through city walls: is this easy enough to put in arbitrary tiles in TC? I would like to see some fights in e.g. a ruined labyrinth with a few towers with archers.

And to remain on the topic of TC and city walls: would it be possible to build extra levels of walls past “stone wall” — what comes to mind is a dungeon inside the city, with a second ring of walls nested inside the first one; or, alternatively, a Vauban-style star fort?

At least, I don't like the fact that cities (and towers) have a lozenge shape in TC instead of an hexagon. This makes attacking them from north (or south) direction disadvantageous (because units need a longer time to reach the door) and it breaks the hexagonal symmetry of the game. Fixing this should be quite easy.

(For TC, what I really miss are AoW1-style exploreable dungeons, but I know that this is not possible to reproduce in AoW2...)

So I am not really sure where to post this, but here goes.

First I want to thank the people that made the patch, it is awesome that it is still being kept alive!

My friend and me started a new game yesterday and thought we would install all the patches as well because why not. After struggling with router port forwarding a bit we were in the game and it was great... till we encountered some of the buildings and units not really loading (being invisible).

Some new buildings loaded like the life node, death node, air node etc... but some did not like the fire node was invisible and the eagle unit as well. They would only show when they were dead.

Is this a known issue? Can someone help us with it? If not, is there any plans to fix it?
