Note: This thread is meant to provide news about the progress of the v1.5 project. Suggestions are welcome, although more threads will be made in the future to make the information flow more fluent.
If at all possible, keep the thread a summary of ideas with a short explanation. Try and keep discussion on a topic minimal and make a thread and link to it, if you think your topic is up for discussion. Remember that suggestions are meant as a patch and the aim is wide acceptance by the AoW-community. This means that changes must be in line and compatible with existing maps and campaigns. In addition, gameplay changes should take Online, Play by Email and Single Player into account. This is different from a mod that is able to change large gaming concepts or is made for whomever is interested.



PLAN FOR UNOFFICIAL PATCH: VERSION 1.5



WHY DEVELOP AN UNOFFICIAL PATCH V1.5?
- To keep interest in Age of Wonders alive!!
- To keep improving aspects of the game.
- To keep the game interesting and dynamic on a competitive level.
- To dramatically improve the possibilities for mapmakers and modders.
- To enhance community involvement.

HOW CAN I HELP?
The development forums are here and everyone who wants to can sign up and contribute! Core members will be admitted by invitation only.

WHEN WILL IT BE RELEASED?

Since the project isn't a financially sponsored or paid endeavour, we have no strict deadline. The patch will not be a rushed product and the necessary time will be taken to fix issues and thoroughly test balance changes. Delays are possible and may take as long as months.

EXPECTED RELEASE DATE:
Currrently undetermined

WHAT IS POSSIBLE?
The teammembers will consist of very able people in the modding/playing/mapmaking/writing world that are capable of working in teams. What is possible will largely depend on the qualities of the teammembers and rules we allow ourselves to break. Decisions regarding some of these issues, as you may understand, are not allowed to be discussed in public on these forums. Please email me at swolte at gmail dot com with questions regarding copyright, hacks, etc...

In terms of additions to the game, v1.5 will be much bolder than v1.4 was.

********************WHAT IS PLANNED SO FAR?********************
This list may be expanded.

CAMPAIGN + Campaign Editor (35% complete)
The campaign will consist out of many linked maps replacing the old campaign (yes, you will be able to switch back and forth). The basic campaign structure therefore is linear but the internal design will allow for as much (perhaps even more than expected...) freedom.
We'll also attempt a campaign editor that actually works so users can make campaigns themselves a lot easier


MORE BUGFIXES (80% complete)

Fixes

RACIAL BOATS/PIONEERS/MACHINES (55% complete)
v1.5 will be a bit bolder in the sense that we will add and replace some existing units. Perhaps only with a couple of races.
- Racial Boats
- Racial Machines
- Racial Pioneers
- Extra Builder unit at Mastery Guild for some Constructor races.


This picture shows Bilge rats (the new Goblin Transport 'boat') transporting nasty Goblins and Kobolds to the human wharf. The peasants and defending pikeman are fleeing for safety towards the old mining tunnel.

NEW HEROES FOR CLASS (80% complete)
This will be the biggest change planned as it will impact gameplay as well as game feel. The intention is to replace existing hero classes with unique graphics (keeping some, but replacing most...). We have decided to go for it, in full force.
Discussion here.

ADDITIONAL WIZARDS and ITEMS. (85% complete)
Some new items and Wizards will be added to the standard library. This means that these can now also show up in the Random Map Generator.

NEW MAPS. (30% complete)
These are maps that will come with the patch. They will show some of the new editor features that will otherwise not be available when playing the game.


This picture shows more water based tiles and units. The whirlpool can suck in even the giant seamonster. On land, there is a fortress holding many magical creatures. and a Seer sees trouble from afar, when a Spiked Maw is flinching its three large, and deadly spikes on his back

MORE NEW UNITS/STRUCTURES/TERRAIN. (80% complete)
Especially mapmakers and single-players will be treated the most with these additions. None of the existing possibilities will be altered or changed. These can be considered as bonuses and have no effect on playing existing maps. Mapmakers can add them at will, the advantage is that a lot of work by fans and hidden opportunities of mapmakers will now be directed supported and easily accessible by everyone.
- New units will also now be available in standard structures (as defenders or recruits), as spirit rewards/infidels.

NEW RACES + RACE SWITCHER (~ temporarily stopped ~)
Another ambitious project is the race switcher. This utility will let you play new races (also in rmg) at the cost of switching one.
Some new races planned:
- Demons
- Gnomes
- Beast
- Fairy
- Lizard

This will be the last priority. If the patch's release is delayed too much, we may opt to do this as a future add-on.

NOTES
- This patch will be larger in size than the previous one. For v1.4, size was a restriction for certain additions and for v1.5 we're gonna let that go completely. Especially now that we are adding movies to the Campaign, hitting 500 MB is possible.

I'm still here (actually I checked this thread after an email from The Groll), so if there is any help needed from me (like making the installer), I will do it.
Hey Pawel, can you please give us an update what the status is on the installer? If I understood Swolte correctly, that's the main thing that is missing for the release and your help is indeed needed there

Making the installer itself is an easy task, it will take me a few hours at most. So when I get a message from Swolte that everything is ready, I will do it (I may also do some other things, like verifying that all the needed .ILB files are included).

But due to my other activities and loss of interest in AoWSM I'm not going to undertake any active role in the development of the patch. I'm only going to help when Swolte asks me to. Also I don't have any information about the current status of the patch, other than things already posted here.

ok thanks. Just saying, cos Swolte posted that only some checking and the installer is missing for the release:
As I mentioned, the patch is pretty much done and only needs a thorough round of checking and a professional installer.
Actually I wouldnt even mind if the patch is released without checking and without installer, I guess the majority who is still around knows how to insert custom resources and is eager to take the risk of not everything working 100%. I personally am more interested in the new map assets that come with the patch.

If you won't make it this year, can you please just release the content you have as it is, maybe as a custom resource folder? Because making it a full package won't matter much if the last ones are gone. This thread got pretty silent already :/

I'm Still Hoping for 1.5 to be released soon and enchanted with support of Official Triumph Studios green light to this work build. Still Hawing in mint that no one of those old games is still active except Microsoft's Age of Empires 2 Had not recently release an expansion of this old Epic game, (Called African Kingdoms) therefore i am thinking why Triumph cud not do that also to regain old glory of old games because they got such Great feel of atmosphere and relay got space to implement more life in those games of Age of Wonders, Age of Wonders 2 SM.

Hello old friends!

I have abandoned AoWSM since some time because PBEM died since AoW III was released.
I also donīt have much time for computing in general BUT my son is addicted to AOWSM since some time and when he gets better we will maybe start playing together again (If he is able to beat me).

I have not talked to Swolte during a longer time.
Maybe he will write some words in this old forum and I really hope he will release the upatch as it is soon even when it is not done.

I would really like to finish my map I made for it.
It could also start new PBEM games.

I still have this forum page pinned in my browser and check if news are around.
I will never forget AOWSM and just today a player wrote me a nice email about Secrets of Marlenia (one of my maps shipped with the first upatch).

I am still here...

I can just repeat myself: Please just release whatever you have right now swolte, I think no one really cares about bugs or an installer.
Let others who are still interested in AoWSM carry the torch, then you can get your well deserved rest and no one will beg you again

I also wonder who else got a recent built of the patch? The mapmakers must have had one to use the new content in their maps? Is there a possibility that at least that version gets uploaded somewhere so active mapmakers or modders can use it?

Hello everyone!

I am new here. Well, actually I am not. I have been visiting this thread for years and years (actually a decade!). Just today I finally gathered enough courage to register here and reply.

Being a serious AoW:SM fan, I still play the game. As recently as yesterday I played Drums of Death which really is an epic piece of art. My most humble thanks to Swolte for creating such an inspiring map.

I just wanted to reply here and let everyone know that there still are many fans who desperately wish for the Unoffial Patch 1.5 to be released. We want it. We need it.

There are still some good players around who believe in your art.
So even when you are busy and donīt have interest in AoWSM anymore.
Please grab the stuff and create a working build for us.

Hey Groll.

Do you know how much (or what kind of) stuff was added to the patch after your latest work build? Is it reasonable that you just release that workbuild for the remaining mappers/modders to use if Swolte cannot release the patch in a reasonable amount of time? (we just have to define a date, maybe that would also encourage Swolte to beat it ^^)

But please no "in next three months I'll try" and "may be in the end of the next year". There's already no big surpsrise but long frustrating waiting. Many years of long frustrating waiting to be honest and with no profit to anybody as we can see it now.

I think it's better to have something disattached and unfinished then to have none and waiting.

As I was part of the campaign team at some point I have a workbuild. But it's very very old (from 2010) and I don't feel good to share it without swoltes permission :-S.

I can really understand all you say and I really wonder why no one get angry so far and demands us other upatchdevs to release what we have.

It is really frustrating to wait for another "end of the year" or "in the next three months" or such shit.
No one really believes this anymore and you can really call us upatch-devs liars.
And in the end many of the silent players still left have abandoned us here because we have fooled you for to long.
Many have lost faith.
And none of us upatch-devs can say "we donīt understand why you lost your faith and get angry".

I dare to say that none of the devs (me included) have worked for the upatch for more than a year now.

I wanted to make an own mod after upatch is released and the last stuff I made was for this own mod.
But I still waited for upatch because I would feel guilty and like a robber (even when it would be new stuff I use in my mod) if I release it before upatch is released.
I would prefer to hand over this stuff to Swolte to implement it but I fear there is no true will to implement it and it would not lead to an earlier release.
In the end I abandoned AoWSM myself because PBEM games broke down when AoW III was released.
The only thing what drags me back is the fact that I made a really cool looking map for upatch and own stuff and the fact that my son is playing the game now. He is getting better ever day and maybe one day he will be a good opponent or ally and draw me back to the game.


Of course I also have the latest but also old workbuild.
But I still donīt think it would be a good idea to release it.

I donīt say "donīt lose faith" or "at the end of the year".
I only say "I still believe" in my old friendship with Swolte and PawelS - even when there is not much left of our "daily communications".
They are still old friends.

I will write another email to Swolte an I think and hope he will show up and write us some words.
Maybe even release what he can wrap together and send it to PawelS to compile and create the installer.

Heads up and "Helm ab zum Gebet"

P.S.: Only a very small part of the map I was working on in the past. I think if I open the editor I will be dragged back for sure but I need a release of the upatch too to find back.

Awesome pic! Man, I miss this game!!

Apologies about the slow responses, but this is still on the radar. I am shooting for a March break release and that's realistic. We were very close last year. PawelS is also on board with this timeline.

No excuse, but I just bought a house and a lot of free time was sucked up by that. Now my family is visiting and they won't leave until mid-February. I should be able to string a couple of hours together with PawelS to release it. Won't even be too buggy!

Oh great! teasers once again. I think it's better to gather them from all thread in one reply to show you guys that you have some moral responcibilities. And to be honest I don't know how you can be that BUSY for not to have hour or two for years - my bet it is the same shit as The Groll said. Groll you're so calm and positive because you have that patch really - others don't. Some grown up from the game some even died during these years. And If you'll go to heroescommunity forums you'll see pojects died even on HDD of the team (Kremlin town) and some leaked and have a new life (like Bastion). I spend three years in intense development in community projects (BotArena project) and made some modules for Vassal (Arkham Horror module) and helped in some other minor tasks for MTG engines and I have to say that if you're making something - you make it and release it and if there's nothing happening out there you tease gathering wow's and nothing will ever happen. Oh yea we're cool look at the teasers we are so professional - no leakage before the release. Those every-commit repository workbuilds are not cool and for loosers - only biggest release ever. Everything is ok guys - really you have wow's in thread history and something on your home PCs and the whole community pissed off for years.

Also good that Groll has the latest work build as well, just in case... The picture looks really great, especially those new assets. The date in the picture (2011) just makes me sad a little bit, that was from 5 years ago.

Reading all of this and that, I always see 'AoW3 killed this, AoW3 killed that' and I never understand... Is it all really serious? How could this piece of sh*t named AoW3 ever kill anything? Triumph has killed all the magic of previous two games, that's what had been really killed.
Did no one see it?

The modding community of old good AoW 1-2 is all that's left for all of us, who still love the serie.
