Dwiggs5.0 is available here:

http://aow2.heavengames.com/downloads/showfile.php?fileid=612

Update 17-12-19 Joep and I are making an Age of Wonders 3 Dwiggs mod. If anyone is interested, just email me at bradjosse@gmail.com

Cheers!

In regards to Dwiggs mod, special thanks to:

El Joep-who did too much to list.

Timelord-again, too much to list.

Igoraki-converted many of the new graphics.

Merkraad-taught me the whole morphing thing

Kirky Picardo-maker of the excellent Brave New World mod. Like Timelord and Joep, he helped me too much to list just any one thing.

Kaskoid-Many of the excellent descriptions come from his desk.

Stillborn, Jean Luc, and many others also contributed some very creative descriptions. Look for the letter at the end of the description to see who wrote it.

If you wish to contact me, you can do so at bradjosse@gmail.com

ATTENTION

If you already have the 1.4 Dwiggs patch, I have made a new resource set that fixes the razing bug and allows you to open and save older maps. I will send it to those who already have the 1.4 patch. It has the same name: Dwiggs1.4_patch

If you don't, I'm uploading this version to replace the "old" one right now. This will be compatible with the resource set I can send to those who already downloaded this file.

It looks like my concerns about downloading and using this mod were well-founded after all.

Bam,

I'm not sure why you would have "concerns." The mod doesn't have viruses, it doesn't break your computer, and the issues mentioned are fixed by one small change to the resource file. After literally putting in hundreds, even thousands of hours in making this mod, it's a bit annoying when people refuse to try it because of a small glitch or two that can easily be fixed and which has really no effect on gameplay.

Anyway, it would be more helpful to me if people would try the mod and report any errors they find rather than refusing to try it because of a few errors they may have heard about.

The mod tries a lot of new things, which in some cases leads to issues arising. I'm doing my best to fix these, but I do rely on users taking a bit of initiative and being willing to take 1 to 5 minutes to make any simple corrections (i.e. recolouring the units) that are required. This is especially true since neither I, nor anyone else who has contributed is getting paid anything for the work done in this mod.

Thanks,

bj

There will always be people who don't seem to appreciate the efforts that people have made.

I thoroughly enjoyed Dwigs 4.0 mod, so I expect to be pleased with Stranger's version of Dwigmod as well. (I am waiting to try this mod while I play "The Warchiefs" expansion for AOE3).

Even teams of commercial game developers routinely have to correct bugs in their games, so it is no surprise that your latest version would have a bug or two slip by.

Good luck with this mod, The_Stranger, much appreciated

Thank you, Fly Guy

I should be uploading some maps over the weekend, which I hope people will enjoy.

I downloaded Dwiggs mod some 2-3 days ago and was astonished to see such a great variety of units. I was a bit sad that you didn't add more buildings. The Heroes are just awesome. I couldn't see some 2-3 units but you know what, I liked the idea of having invisible units, not the ability but truely invisible. I will surely make a dwiggs map as soon as I finish my Tales of Matunmura scenarios.

Cheers, Sausad. I am curious: I've been trying to edit the most popular maps in the downloads section and make them compatible with Dwiggs. Would you mind if I tried my hand at converting your Tales of Matunmura: The Titan Gate?

Sure! Go ahead! As long as it doesnt concern with editing events bcoz there are lots of them and they are all bummed up.

You have to remember that for me(and probably some other people) it's a big time commitment to download your mod Stranger, it's over 5 hours long by the estimate shown with a 56K dial-up connection. I'm really reluctant to tie up my computer for such a long time only to get to the end and find out the mod doesn't work, or that it doesn't work without a lot of extra hassle.

Hey Stranger,

Kinda odd but the Dwiggs1.4 Patch missing ilbs and resource update zip file only contains a dir named after its self, that holds a dummy txt file named hi.

I think you u/l an earlier version.

Anyways, I'm really happy to read that the focus is now going to be on map making. This is where we can really start to enjoy the dwiggs mod!
If its ok with you I'm gonna go grab a couple map that I think are brilliant and suggest them to be "dwiggified", or better yet perhaps you can drop a few hints on how one does that? (besides the obvious re-saving the file with the dwiggs custom resources on)

Cheers

I understand, Bam, but you can dl at night. It's up to you, of course

Still, I uploaded a large file, but it hasn't been posted yet. So, the dummy file is still there And, sure, send me your ideas for maps

Bam, I'm not sure where you live, but why not do yourself a favor and step into the 21st century and jettison that super-slow modem? Perhaps one of the forum readers can send you an old one of theirs that is more "up-to-speed". I'd do so myself, but i just gave three to the local Vietnam Veterans charity organization that helps out Nam brothers and others through their thrift stores.

And Stranger is right about downloading at night; you're asleep and traffic is low.

Believe me, it is worth the effort in that you get an almost new version of an established great game.

Hi The Stranger,
I don't know if the problem has been dressed here because I don't have the courage to read nearly 200 pages of this thread

Well, it is classic. I can not play any scenario except the one comes with your mod, Athenodore II. I tried with the most common ones like Choice of Weapons but it did not work.

Yeah, I openned it in Editor and save it as another name, but after the loading, there's only the Portrait of the Wizard appear, then everything is frozen. I had to push ESC to quit the game. Yet, the mod works well with random map generator.

That's easier said than done Kaskoid. I live in a dead zone here, don't ask me why. There's a major city not far to the west and a large town to the east that both get DSL but it's not available here for some screwed up reason. I'm not about to move just so I can download this mod either.

Stranger, one map that has never worked for me right from the first version of Dwiggs 1.4 is Drums of Death. Rise of Evil seems to work fine if I save it under the ruleset and load it but DoD always hangs after loading.

I remember DoD working with earlier versions of Dwiggs (prior to 1.4) as I have played it.

The error shown in the AOW:SM log is always about missing ILBs (off the top of my head, one missing ILB listed was that of the dryad - though I checked and it is present). I even tried to fix it but got nowhere close.

Not saying you have to move bam, just buy a faster modem (like 128K) or get an accelerator like

http://www.inklineglobal.com/products/mb/index.html,

or any number of others. There are undoubtedly some shareware options out there.

No, I don't work for any of them; just pointing out that one need not feel forced to live with the limitations of 56K.

128K modem? Never heard of that.

I thought accelerators only worked on web page/text loading speeds?

I started to download the mod last night but then saw the estimated time of 8 hours? Then after a bit it went up to 10 hours! There's no way I'm going to tie up my computer that long whether it's in the middle of the night or not. I don't even think my connection would hold that long without dropping me. I'm wondering why anyone would make a mod so big that people with dial-up connections can't even download it.

Hi Bam,

I have to agree with what Kaskoid said... get into the 21 st century!

You could get the Getright program, which allows you to resume downloads, so you could get it one piece at a time. This program has been around for many years... Or Pando, so someone can e-mail you it. What system you're using? Windows what version?

Anyways, I wonder where do you live Bam? I live in Brasil, a '3rd World Country', and here anyone can surely get a decent modem connection for FREE that would not drop on you...

Back some 8+ years ago? I had like an 8k modem and got a demo of Heroes of might and Magic, 25 megs, in some 14 hours or more... doesn't hurt to go to sleep and let computer get it - and back then, there was no Getright or similar programs;and the connection didn't drop also

If you can't get Dwiggs, how do you get drivers or anything whatsoever for your computer? I'm not a computer know-it-all, honestly much to the opposite; I just know enough to play games, and I am sure you can get Dwiggs easy!

@ Stranger: Athendore 2 did not work on my Dwiggs copy. It failed to load, so I opened it in Editor and saved it; after that, it loaded, but the Wizard portrait appeared on map seting screen and crashed the game. Any thoughts?

I usually don't have too much of a problem because most things(like drivers) aren't over 3 MB in size. I don't think it's as much my connection(which isn't the greatest but I've seen a lot worse) as the size of the file.

Download a free copy of Pando and I will send it to you. I assume you have a compression program like WinZip or Winrar (both free).

Or, go to

I appreciate the effort but it's just not going to happen because Pando won't work and Getright costs money that I really can't afford to spend on a game mod right now.

I kind of figured by 128K you meant an ISDN modem but again, if I'm not spending $30 on the Getright program just to download a mod that should have been designed with dial-up users in mind to begin with then I'm sure not spending $50 on a new modem to get it.

Dude,

Yes we're trying to help, but seems like you had your mind mind set to 'block'; to start with... you never answered me what your system is, for example. Or your country...do you live in that North Korea (now nuclear) dictatorship or what?

Let me try to be clear here. What age are you? Are you someone that actually possess any computer skills whatsoever? Can you 'Google' and find stuff on internet? Who knows, I have a neighbour that never heard of Google.

Getright is NOT paid. Sigh. READ their site. You can download basic version of it for FREE.Here:http://www.getright.com/get.html

Gee I probably can't say here, but how much people, for that matter, do you think that buy original windows? Seems to me you're complaining about nonsense stuff. What is 30 bucks anyway even if that was the matter? Hardly a day's pay for even the worst jobs... gee, a teenager allowance would be enough for that, if that's your case...

And Drivers go well over 3 meg, sorry. Well, least for a 128 meg video card or modern soundcards. If you're using a 10 year old PC 386 with 44 Ghz you sure will need only 2-3 meg drivers...

Sorry if I seem upset, but I actually want to help. I am sure you can get this mod if you want, with your curent connection and for free. But if you just don't want to,(and you don't even have basic programs that have been around for 10 years like Getright) nothing we can do right?

Well from your response I'm betting I'm a lot older than you Merk, and there's no need to insult my intelligence. I'm not real computer savvy but I know enough to get by.

How many people have Getright? I never heard of it and the people I know that I talked to never heard of it. I doubt it's as mainstream a program as you're making out no matter how long it's been out. I looked at their site and saw a download option but it looked like there was going to be payment due at some point so I backed out of it.

I've never had trouble getting drivers, that's the point. This mod shouldn't take as long as it does to download. The estimate on the page you download it from was also WAY off when it claimed 5 hours(a ridiculous download time even for a 56K, let alone TWICE that actually). I don't know how it was set up but something's wrong when it takes that long even by 56K standards. By the way, Dell still offers a 56K modem by default on it's systems as far as I know and there's still a lot of people using them to this day so it's not near as outdated a modem as you're making out.

Heh, don't make it personal man... because part of my posts are actually in light humor. And I am 26 years old.

By the way, Kaskoid, which replied with something similar to my... witty responses? Is a gentleman over 40 you know (I love his responses on forums btw hehe). I didn't mean to insult your intelligence or your age.

But you should see my point. And his.

If not Getright, maybe some other program that does the same - that let's you pause/resume downloads.Like I said, I have a neighbour who never heard of Google. I don't know where you live and what's available to you, and I guess I will start repeating myself if I continue. Let me say today we have freeware of all sorts. Just browse web.

Dwiggs is a nice mod and the one that reinvented the game the most, so far, I'd say. It's worth the 'trouble'. There are mods/games way bigger in size than this, and I could get them even with my conenction of 10 years ago.

And sorry, if you're older/more mature than me, you certainly ain't more patient

It says right on the download page to disable any download manager or accelerator programs so Getright and anything like it aren't an option. I tried it anyway and it says the server doesn't support resuming, which of course defeats the whole purpose.

Why this site would allow a 144 MB mod file but not allow download managers or accelerators makes absolutely no sense but there you have it. I guess people like me are just flat out screwed.

You can set Getright to be used anyway even in such case.(I hope I can talk about it here )

Go Tools> Getright Configuration (or F8 shorchut); go to Advanced, then Protocols; check the box "Send 'referer' in HTTP requests" which allows a list of options below it; then choose first one:"Calculated from open web browser page"

With this I can use Getright on any page. Remember to have Getright tray icon on so windows normal download is not used.

But you do have a valid point there, and I suggest you contat admins of this site. Allowing programs to help resume downloads would be good to many people.

Hi guys,

I should just note that people with dialup have downloaded this mod and others that are larger. It's a matter of commitment and priority. If it's not worth it to someone, hey no problem But I suggest we drop the discussion for now, as it's gone on too long already without a solution. If Bam has any questions about downloaders or stuff, and does indeed want the mod, he could email us for more details, I think.

Anyway, I hope to have a game tommorrow, if some of you are interested

On a sad note, I had the Athendore II map up and running, then added a few heroes and it crashed. I'm still trying to fix it.

On a happier note, though I lost Race to the Death in the same way, I went back and re-edited it. I've sent that version to King David, who will be looking to add a little of his own magic. I hope to have it up for download soon. And then there are a couple maps that Kaskoid and I are working on, which I will try and have ready by the end of the weekend.

See ya,

bj
