Hello!

I'm having trouble getting AoW to start. I tried both my CD and the GOG.com versions - both in 1.3 and 1.4 patch levels, but all I get when starting is a black screen. I already switched off direct3d, directsound, forbade resolution changes, set the resolution to 640*4xx, activated compatibility mode and tried running the game windowed, but the problem persists. I don't even get to the intro sequence, the screen just turns black and the process freezes.

Is this a common problem? I'm running on a Win7 x64 machine, just like my last one. However I didn't have any problems with the last machine. Video drivers are up to date.

Hi DarkMind and welcome!

If I'm correct, aow2 was only supported to v1.2. So the installation 1.3 and 1.4 may well be the source. The 1.3 and 1.4 you got is probably from aow:sm, not aow2. So.. try installing vanilla version and run, then update step by step.

Do you have any other sequels of Aow to test with? (AoW1, AoW:SM). After more than 10 years, there are so few (to none) that still play AoW2. Simply because the game engine is similar to AoW:SM and a lot buggier than aow:sm. Most players only played aow2 to enjoy the campaign then moved on the aow:sm.

You obviously have tried any methods that people would suggest and your previous x64 machine worked fine with it. So we can exclude the incompatibility. Now the issue seem to have something to do with the hardware. If your video drivers are up to date, maybe you want to try with the original driver? I'm not sure it will help but worth trying. And I would suggest installing on a different location (i.e: D:\)than the default location (\Program Files x86\).

I did actually mean AoW:SM, not just AoW2, sorry for not stating that in the first place. You suggested installing to a different location, I will try that. But why might that help?

I think I'm also going to try a a 1:1 copy from my working desktop machine. As far as I remember, I already did that a few years back to get the copy onto my old laptop and the copied version worked just fine.

If it's aow:sm, it's best to post in Aow:SM Tech help section not far from here

The activity in there is a lot better, and people with more technical knowledge like Hell Brick or Pawel will definitely be able to offer some ideas how to fix.

I hope some Swolte, Enginerd or Chowguy can see this thread and help you move it over there. Or you can just save time by re-posting it there.

Swolte's the only one of us with that access, at least in this section. I can move stuff around in the AoW1 areas but not here.

And I have no other suggestions on how to fix it either.
