Every some much time a "I need help with DevEd" thread used to pop up. The first time you answered it's no problem, but after a few times it slowly becomes annoying.

So I came up with this thread. It was a place where I tried to explain the basic of DevEd and answered questions.

One day I wrote the DevED Beginner's Guide so the primary purpose of this thread (explaining the basics) is now obsolete. But feel free to post questions about things that are not in the guide or things which are in the guide, but may be a little confusing. Whatever.

Have fun with modmaking.

Froster answered: "Hello Galvais1. If you still need the help, extract the 3 files in the "dev" folder (ie AoWEd, AoWEPACK, AoWTCPCK) into your main patched AoW folder, replacing the originals. To switch back, extract the 3 files in the "136" folder into the main AoW folder."

To elaborate, the download of DevEd is a .zip file called devedit.zip. You're supposed to unzip it to ".../Age of Wonders/Release". This creates a folder called DevEdit in the Age of Wonders/Release folder. And in the DevEdit folder there are two subfolders. One is called 136 and the other one is called dev.

If you're having toruble understanding this, here's a picture to help you understand:

If you copy the 3 files from the folder called dev to your main Age of Wodners folder that will allow you to use DevEd, but you won't be able to play the game. If you want to play the game you need to copy the 3 files from the folder called 136 and paste them in the main Age of wodners folder. You don't have to do this every time, only after you've been using DevEd.

Hello Galvais1. If you still need the help, extract the 3 files in the "dev" folder (ie AoWEd, AoWEPACK, AoWTCPCK) into your main patched AoW folder, replacing the originals. To switch back, extract the 3 files in the "136" folder into the main AoW folder.

Froster's last reply to Galvais1 (post #78) really should be added to the first post of this thread...

It would be a very good thing if either LordDragatus or one of the forum moderators would edit the install/uninstall instructions into the first post.

And thank you, whoever, if this gets done!

I'm posting this on the off chance that there's anyone still alive around here who is also knowledgeable enough to help me...

Basically, my question is what changes to the ruleset I can make without having to attach the hss/pfs file to a map based on that ruleset. For example, unmounted heroes seem to work just fine with vanilla AoW. What about modified unit stats? Hero races? Unit gfx? And so on...

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

EDIT: Can someone explain to me how to use combat terrain gfx for the real map? I tried copying a 4-hex rock to the grass objects panel and set it up as a mountain, but when I define it to be "complex" it goes invisible, and if isn't complex I can walk straight through it in the game, no matter which other settings I'm using.

EDIT2: Is it possible to alter the names for the alignments ("Pure Good".."Pure Evil") and the ability names? I'd specifically like to replace good vs evil with something like nature (Elves, Lizards) vs technology (Dwarves, Humans).

When you want to make e.g. new grass mountains, copy one existing grass mountain in the largness you like. Click on it, go to complex and alter the gfx. That way it works as mountain in the real map and should work e.g. with the altar of death and other terrain changers.

With devEd alone, it is not possible to alter names of abilities or alignments.

Has anyone ever tried "Fixed Imagelibrary Terrain" ? From what i´ve experienced, it works as transparent terrain, like the desert bones, but can be placed on any ground in the editor.

I followed flyguys's suggestion and edited the original post with aditional isntructions on installing DevEd. I bet you didn't see that coming.

I have a strange (or maybe normal?) problem. There is no sounds of deaths during TC in my AoW, but they can be heared during FC. I would try to fix that using DevEd. My first question is: Is there anybody who without this problem? If yes, then would you like to share the settings of sfx of the human swordsman?

I didn't know there were supposed to be death sounds....

Probably anyone who use first time the replay or Fast Combat, will be suprised. I had polish version on DVD with AoW 1-2,5, but I also bought game on GOG and "problem" with the sounds is the same.
This isn't the end of the surprise. There is sound of "parry" and "charge" in the game, but I've never heard them, even during replays/FC. So I have an idea to create "rich-sound mod", with added some sounds to Tactical Combat, but only those, which I suppose that should be.

I tested some changes and the parry sfx sounded nice with Knight.
