Before I begin, let me say that I will be gone for most of August (from about Aug ~14 to early September), so we may be stymied in the meanwhile. Anyhow, I figure that it might be reasonable to start making characters for my latest ME game. I will warn you that it will be a little unorthodox, and a little bit different from what I usually do - but it is, I feel, appropriate given some of Tolkien's own themes and sentiments.

Also, and I want to make this as clear as I can: You do not need to have read the Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, or any books other than The Lord of the Rings! You may find some of this a little confusing if all you've seen is the movies, but even then I'd let you get away with playing an uneducated character. I want to be as inclusive as possible!

--

It is 19 of January, 3019 of the Third Age. The War of the Ring has begun. Men are marshalling in the south against the coming blow from the east. Armies from Dol Guldor march on Lorien and Mirkwood, and allies of Sauron prepare their blows on Erebor and Dale. So far, the major battles have not begun, but there is constant violence in Osgilliath, on the northern border of Lorien and southern Mirkwood, and Dunlanding raiders burn villages in the Westfold of the Mark.

But the Great War is coming, the great battles at that will be the End of the Third Age. Nowhere, not even in the peaceful Shire, are rumors of impending doom unheard. Will there be a Fourth Age, or only a renewal of the dominion of Sauron, but with this time, no Elves left to resist him?

But even in all of this, there is another danger, one that looms beyond the horizon. For even if a miracle happens, even if the One Ring were to somehow appear... and be destroyed, what would be left of the world afterwards? Evil stands much to conquer, but what does good have to preserve? And then, just what is 'good', or does 'good' defy the fate of the world?

--

I expect this to be a fairly varied game. I have already planned lots of combat, a bit of mystery, some tragedy, and opportunity for at least character interaction, if not character development (that's up to the PCs).

The first topic is where the party will begin. I will tell you that the first task will be to get to Lorien, so where you start almost doesn't matter, and it's fine if the party starts in more than one place. A little village near the Rohan-Anorien (northern Gondor) border is one rather convienient place, complete with a tavern, if we want to be cliché, but other places are fine, too.

Each player may have one or two characters, a la Black Hound's For The Throne game. Aside from starting location, I need from each player, your character(s)':

1. Name. The reasons you need a name of some kind should be sufficiently obvious that I should not need to explain them.

2. Race. I will allow virtually anything that you could reasonably expect to encounter in Middle-Earth and yet be intelligent enough to understand the concept of a quest. I do allow lesser Maiar* (see Elurin's character Merandunë/Melelan in the Middle Earth 1980 roleplay - in fact, Elurin may play Melelan again if he likes). However, you're going to be working for Galadriel and a, ah, friend of hers, so keep that in mind. I will not allow Edain (they're extinct), or anything superpowerful (e.g. Dragons).

3. Sex. You can be male or female. (Answers like 'yes', 'hermaphrodite', or 'get-off-this-forum-you-pervert' are not acceptable answers )

4. Biography. This is a very important section because it explains why your characters believe and do what they do. I'd like at least a paragraph for each character.*

5. Beliefs. Belief is going to be an important part of this roleplay, and what your character values will be equally important. I particularly want you to include your character's thoughts on beauty, nature, fate, and magic, and you may define "magic" as broadly or as narrowly as your character believes. Again, you're working for Galadriel and somebody else with beliefs very similar to hers... and even if you could slip a bad apple past Galadriel, slipping one past this other character will be even harder.

6. Skills. Normally, I like a relatively fantastical interpretation of Tolkien (lots of what we would call "magic", even if the characters using it don't). For this game, I want to continue the theme that "magic" (with and without the quotes) is declining. Thus, I will allow characters who can cast spells, but just think about this. You should all be capable people - not necessarily the sort of people one would expect to change history (even though you may), but presumably who could at least handle themselves in a pinch (and you will be pinched).

7. Inventory. This section should be pretty self-explanatory. I allow for ancient items or items made with the ancient arts, but their powers should generally be fading.

8. Appearance. What do you look like? Does one half of your face look human and the other half like a cabbage ? What clothes do you wear? How much of your equipment is visible to a passerby?

9. Relation between your characters. How do they know each-other? This entry obviously does not exist if you have only one character, unless of course two characters of different players have some past history

*For those who have read The Silmarillion: This roleplay will involve several things from the First Age. There are three significant areas, in my opinion, in which LotR's portrayal of the world differs from that of the Sil. These are (1) the age of the Maiar, (2) the timescale of the First Age, and (3) the exact nature of the Edain. These elements can be discussed OOC (or elsewhere); however, I would like to avoid any players with Maiar characters recalling too many details of Ainulindalë, although in-character discussion of the underlying plan that Eru has for the world are welcome, even perhaps intended .

All good points; yes, certainly eagles fish by picking things up. I guess I was trying to picture what the size of a Great Eagle should be like - if it weights several hundred pounds, picking up a struggling person on the wing would be somewhat iffy, but if it's over a thousand, it would be less so. As for armor, I had not thought about the outer feathers/down coating - yes, that would be fairly effective against impacts, wouldn't it?

Sometimes I forget that something that is obvious to me may not be obvious to others, as a biologist the feathers/down coating thing was obvious to me, but I can see whey it would not be so obvious to others.

I don’t think it is mentioned anywhere in Tolkien’s books exactly how big the Great Eagles are, but their lord carries Gandalf quite a long distance on several occasions. Gandalf is not a small person so to do so it would have to be quite large. Unless you have objections, I would say that Gwilithtirn weights about 250 kg (550 pounds) although as a bird he will look like he weights twice as much (the weight of birds is much less than that of mammals of similar size).
Eagles can lift of the ground carrying something that weight about as much as themselves, so 250 kg fits well with that I wrote that Gwilithtirn could carry 4 times Calenhenebiel’s weight for a short distance (I figure that Calenhenebiel weights about 60 kg (130 pound))

Being a paleontologist, I ought to have understood that myself, so don't sweat it. The problem that I had (and still have) with feathers stopping impacts is this: the guard feathers aren't exactly rigid, even if the down feathers are soft. But as you say, small impact weapons - you give sling bullets as an example - would reach feathers as piercing weapons. Larger weapons I suppose depend - although I would think that large impact weapons would still be very bad for an eagle, since birds have hollow bones.

Anyhow, I think we're at an understanding. Now, BH I know is busy, and Elurin has disappeared from what I can tell. I suppose this is crunch time...

I unfortunately need a much more detailed background than this. Moreover, I cannot think of a believable way to introduce a Dwarf at this point in time into the story, since the party is already in Lórien. I would still be willing to allow an Elf character (possibly a Dúnadan), but without excellent explanation of how a Dwarf got into Lórien and has heretofore been neglected from everybody's plans (Galadriel included), I cannot accept a new Dwarf character.

As for specific problems:

Quoted from me:

4. Biography. This is a very important section because it explains why your characters believe and do what they do. I'd like at least a paragraph for each character

What you have, although four sentences, is hardly a paragraph. I could rewrite what you have there into a single (if long) sentence.

Quoted from me:

I particularly want you to include your character's thoughts on beauty, nature, fate, and magic, and you may define "magic" as broadly or as narrowly as your character believes.

These four elements are absolutely critical to the story, and you would need to include your character's beliefs regarding them.

Quote:

He carries his fathers magical axe and magical shield.

Since magic in any of its varieties is something rather special and otherwise definite on Arda, just calling items "magical" doesn't tell me anything about what their properties are. You mention some about the axe, but what is special about the shield?

The first (and hopefully final) attempt of having Denedor 'fleshed' and accepted.

Name: Denedor

Race: Human; Gondorman with Dúnedain blood.

Sex: Male

Biography: Growing up in Gondor had been rather dull for Denedor, who always felt as though he had some greater calling. Enlisting as a soldier did little to further his nagging questions, and he has led a rather quiet border life in the province of Anórien. He had grown a soldiers bond with Eredur, Inistur and Andra rather quickly, and considered them brothers.
Having been involved in only minor conflicts, he had however encountered the Nazgûl once before, and remembered well.
He was a soldier first, philosopher last.

Beliefs: Denedor held no true religious beliefs. Warfare was a religion enough, and he fought to live. His thoughts on magic, were at best skeptical, and often he joked on such things, despite some inner feeling of magic being more encompassing of the world as he knew it, than he allowed himself to accept.
He was rather neutral when it came to Nature. He did not see the 'trees for trees', but rather how many could one hide behind, in or around an area of land, with any given terrain. Often he would unconciously play out strategic scenarios in his minds eye, when observing an area of land he did not know well.
When thinking of Beauty, as with many other soldiers, he thought of the Barmaid, with bright eyes, big smile, and all other 'common comforts'. He had never seen himself to be one to settle, and his perception of beauty was rather narrow in this matter. In his own sense, however, Denedor thought of warfare as 'beautiful'. Not because the loss of life, but the challange it offered his mental prowess.
Oddly, Denedor had a private thought on fate. He had always thought that he had been meant for greater things, and was not sure whether it was his 'ancient' blood, or just wistful dreams of a soldier, but he knew he had yet to find his true calling.

Skills: Denedor could wield a spear like a devil, and he had also trained with sword and shield. He often 'took charge' in a battle, without even realizing it. He was a purebred soldier, and as such, his skills lay in mind, and in weapon.
He had toyed with archery for a few years, before giving it up, but he had trained with the Rohan in mounted combat.

Inventory: Denedor was equipped with a sturdy Gondor spear, and what he defined (personally) as superior chainmail(no special properties). He possessed a small leather helm, stashed in his pack, but rarely bothered with it.
His boots were leather, dyed a deep brown, almost black, and he wore a simple white tunic over that of his chainmail.

Appearance: (this is where I foresee the most trouble )
Denedor stood around 5'10" and was of average build. His hair was dark, and in full sunlight, seemed to be a rich deep brown, otherwise black. It was wavy, and around 6 inches long, and often tied at the back with a leather cord. Denedor had no full facial hair, but rather preferred to keep it as a stubble.
His eyes were of a light blue, and intense.

Misc: Although gruff at times, and quite distrustful of anything 'new' Denedor has a good relationship with his fellow Gondormen (Eredur, Inistur, Andra) and would gladly aid them in any situation. He is also prone to have an instant rapport with other disciplined soldiers, but finds it difficult to get along with the mercenary type.

*I hope that is ok. I think there may be some conflict with eye/hair colour. As previously stated, I have read Tolkien, just not that up to speed on racial features.*

That's perfect! Even the appearance is fine for his character!

Is it too late to try and get a character into this RPG? If so, are there... any thoughts on another popping up? I'd like to play a Noldorin elf... I have my sights set on something that I probably need approval for, so if I can talk to you about a character, Beren, I would like to.
Thanks.

I am planning on starting something in the not too distant future. For this roleplay, you will have to come up with an explanation of how you would join the party. What are your ideas for your Noldo?
