Woohoo! Just got off the plane and decided to drop by the forums. The Triumph guys were most kind and let me sit through several AoW press demos. I also got some hands on time playing some of the demo maps they had created for E3.

Man, am I burnt out. Somewhere in between the very cool games (pikmin!), the poledancers, the small people, the school girls, and the large quantities of beer, I became a wee bit dazed.

You've read the previews up on other sites so I don't want to repeat any of that. The one thing that stands out is that AoWII captures the whole 'detailed magically fantasy world in a box' better than any other game I've seen. You really need to see it in action...it's delightful. :-)

Here are the questions folks asked before I left:

Will there be racial Traits?:
Yep. Cities of a particular race will get certain inherent bonuses.

Random Terrain/map generator?:
Yep. They are really concerned about making it somewhat balanced. This is going to be a tricky problem, but they have a lot of good ideas.

Will there be minotaurs?:
Talk about opening a can of worms. We talked about this one for easily an hour. I asked the question and everyone looked at me in stunned silence. Someone broke out laughing.

Then Lennart asked very seriously, "If we have minotaurs, how will we explain where they came from? We need to maintain world continuity. Centaurs bother me because I can't figure out if they come from a man having sex with a horse or a horse having sex with a woman."

Another guy piped in, "Obviously, it's a man having sex with a horse, since it would be physically impossible for a woman to give birth to a baby centaur, but a horse could manage it easily..."

To which Lennart responded, "Well, it's all dumb anyway. Everyone knows that no one has sex with cows, so minotaurs are 'psychologically improbable'. We can't make a game only perverts would buy."

Josh vehemently denied this point. "In America, it's quite common to have sex with cows. We have a lot of cows. It's only in Europe they restict themselves to horses"

The conversation degenerated at this point. There was talk of having an entire minotaur race, complete with minotaur mages and minotaurs riding minotaurs. All I can say is God bless beer.

Are there Events?:
Yes! You'll be able to do complex event based maps using the editor.

Faster vs. more Complex combat?
This really didn't seem like an issue. The Triumph guys have thought of a lot of really cool tweaks that weren't mentioned on the forums, so its really not a fair question. More things happen in a shorter amount of play time. If I were to classify the game I'd say it's more 'densely packed'. That's a good thing. :-)

Now I'm off to crash. Hope this helps a bit. Looks like it will be worth the wait.
-Danc.

AWWWWWW! I want Minotaurs! I love minotaurs! I played a minotaur Fighter/Mage in a Dragonlance AD&D game for nearly 3 years and he kicked ass!

Great info Danc! Thanks for sharing! Got anything else?

WOW that must have been cool !

Have a good night... and when you get up ...you better COME BACK HERE AND TELL US THE WHOLE STORY!!!!! What's all this generic blathering?

a)WHAT ARE ALL THOSE THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO IN TC? (I don't mean "gimme an axample" I mean "WRITE DOWN A DETAILED GODDAMN LIST OF THEM!!!")

b)And the cities? WHAT RACES HAVE YOU SEEN? WHAT ARE THEY PLANNING TO INCLUDE?

c)DID THEY SPEAK ABOUT FUTURE EXPANSIONS? TO ADD WHAT?

d)DID THEY KILL THE PENGUINS? (God, make him say YES, pleeeease!)

e)What does it mean that the TC map is smaller? How smaller? It's not like the HOM&M map I hope?

f)Did you see TC in cities?

JUST SPILL THE BEANS AND SPILLTHEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!

(PS - Minotaurs don't come from either man with cows or women with bulls they'd simply come from Warlords)

Hey, they were there. I was there. What was I going to do? Say, "Hey Triumph guys. Screw you and your little 2/3rds Hollanderish game"? That would have been mean. ;-)

Tactical combat:
- Certain spells like the storm and the chain lightning do collateral damage. So they are useful, but you have to use them very carefully or your knock out your own units
- Seduce seemed to work more reliably with better balance. Units switched sides quite a bit so it was a very useful tactic.
- Protective enchantments seemed more powerful. This could have been just because they had cooler graphics. :-)
- There were nifty statistics on missle attacks so you knew what was contributing to attack chances down to the percentage.
- Retaliation takes up action points. If you get a big hero that is attacked by a dozen little units, eventually he won't be able to retaliate. Thus, heros are useful, but they are only effective with supporting units to break up the hordes.

Other stuff
- No mention of future expansions
- No mention of penguins
- Maps are nothing like HOMM. There's still lots of room to maneuver.
- I didn't get a chance to have tactical combat in cities...just outside.

I wouldn't take the whole minotaur thing very seriously. Josh had been supplying us with some 9+% beer called 'Big Foot'. Vicious.

Danc obviously had the Dutch beers, including the Grolsch Kanon (11.6% vol) gone to his head.

Anyway, the show was a blast. We had lots of great reactions to the demo and met a lot of old friends.

I've had some microbrew beer with 9+% content. My favorite is one called "Diesel Fuel". Its pitch black and a few pints will knock you on your arse. Also if you can get to Canada Molsen Triple X is 9+% beer.

Whoops, forgot to cap Canada. Funny I made sure to put the beer in caps in the first go round.

I saw elves, orcs and draconians. There were also a bunch of summoned units...spiders, and dragons in particular. One of the elvish units, the Iron Maiden, was particularly nifty if you like ladies on horseback.

There was mention of 12 races total.

(Less caps please. :-)

I can't.: When I Get ENTHUSIASTIC My Left Middle Finger Gets Twisted & Crooked & Wouldn't Mmove From The CAPS LOCK... No Harassing Implyed

Edit by Blackmane:
Sorry bro, but even so, please try and keep the caps down. I left the first one up there because excitement is fine.
All caps ALL the time though, no matter what the case, is just pushing it.

Hope you don't mind. *smiles* let's keep the place nice.
