Topic Subject: Campaign Earth 1 help needed

Firstly, hello to everyone.

Secondly, to the point. I checked every topic in here labeled Earth 1 but I couldn't find anyone with the same problem.

The thing is this: I find the first dwarven town with my wizard, no problem. I enlist the dwarven hero, no problem. But then, there are two independent goblin towns right next to mine. So I take one of them, prepare to migrate it when I see that the population is cheerful. A bit odd, since...I'm good, they're evil. So I look in my dwarven town, and the population is oppressed. Also my hero and army have a 50% chance to rebel all of a sudden.
I check my diplomacy screen and I see I'm friendly with all the evil races and hated with the dwarves (the only good race on the map apparently).

The only thing I can think of is that taking that goblin town somehow changed my initial race from dwarves to goblins.

I restarted the map, again when I took the goblin town same thing happened. Restarted again, took the other goblin town. Same thing happened.

Now I wouldn't really mind switching races, if not for my entire army and especially the hero being dwarves. It would be doable, though annoying if I took the game down with just my initial town, but from what I read, I have to take two other goblin towns out before I can take on Mab. If that also changes my race...I'm...well...screwed.

Has anyone experienced anything like this? Any advice?

My advice would be to start migrating the goblins to dwarves.

Thanks for the advice.
I postponed taking the towns until I got Peacekeeper. In the meantime I pumped up cannons and split my dwarves between them. That kept things stable until I migrated enough towns to them. And when I took the second to last town from Mab, clicked migrate, it suddenly switched my race back to dwarves. Weird bugs...

It's important to remember that in this game, you're not playing as the leader of a "race" but of an empire, and that empire need not be homogeneous. It will, however have an overall alignment determined by it's racial composition, and it is that alignment that affects how units of the various races view it.

In this case, once you took the first Goblin town, it would appear that you had more goblins then dwarves in your population, giving an overall "evil" alignment. Since Goblins have a bonus to population growth their towns will tend to grow faster even if they start with the same population, so in the absence of other factors this situation will only be exacerbated by waiting.

One thing you could do though rather then migrate the goblins is use them for forced labor, producing machines (which have no alignment) with the "rush" option. This will give you both occupation troops to keep them in line, under act to redusce their population allowing the dwarven towns to catch up.

I see, so it's not a bug, it's the way things work. I used to combine armies in earlier scenarios, but I didn't know that the alignment was given by population and not just army. Well that certainly explains the tons of problems I've been having in the water scenarios by combining neutral with good (humans with midgets). Even though I didn't have both in the same army (just used humans to defend, swashbucklers do wonders), my halfling heroes had poor morale.

I wish there was a place for me to read all these stuff. Some kind of extended manual or something. This game being as old as it is, there's a considerable lack of information across the internet about it. And most is about SM.

Thanks a lot for the info. I feel enlightened now .

Yes, Shadow Magic is so much better than AoW2, hence almost everybody that had it quickly changed to Shadow Magic as soon as it came out. The AoW2 campaign is good fun, though. As they use the same basic engine most of the Shadow Magic advice applies to AoW2 as well, but AoW2 has fewer options. Fewer races, no Random Map Generator, hard to mod, etc.

I know, I played SM a few years back, finished the campaign if I remember corectly. I'm only playing AoW2 because I want to finish this story arc before I get to SM. Shadow Magic might be overall superior than Wizard's Throne, but the campaign is crap compared to this one.

Migrating a town right away is safe, and a migrating town doesn't count for the racial mixing. It appears like that right when you take it, but next turn your dwarves will be content.

Lost count of how many times I've played that map (love it), but never once lost anything at all to rebellion for taking and converting goblins towns.

And agreed, AoW2:WT campaign was much more fun than the SM one. You can copy them over though, and play them in SM as well (Which is about the only thing I use SM for really).
