Topic Subject: Let's ask for the source code!

While I was browsing the Civilization Fanatics site in search for new unit graphics (and they do have a lot of great usable units!), I noticed that there is a petition going on to ask game publishers Atari to release the source code for Civilization II. I think we should do the same for Age of Wonders! After all, the game is over 5 years old now, and has been succeeded by 2 newer titles in the same series. I doubt that AoW 1 has any real commercial value left to the publishers. The technology inside is probably very much aged by now, so from a competitior's point of view there's not much left there either. So maybe, just maybe, we could persuade them.

But why should we?

Well, if nothing else, we could use the source code to finally get all the pieces together of the used file formats for graphics, campaigns, unit stats, rule sets, etc. We could fix some bugs that are still there, either in the game itself or in the editor. We could build in support for multiple rule sets and/or campaigns. Maybe add a new feature or two ...

How's that sound? If you like this, please send me an email containing your name and valid email address (which I will keep in a safe place of course). If we get enough names (let's say 100 for starters) I will do my best to get this petition to the right place. Speaking of which: would that be Triumph Studios or Take Two?

Anyway, let's get this list growing!

UPDATE 2006-04-01:

Take 2 Interactive is not responding to my messages, either by email or 'classic' mail. Therefore, I am afraid that we will have to let go of this idea.

I thank you all for your interest and support.

There's another option:

jagged alliance 2 released their source code, but not exactly for free. So they released the code, fans got what they wanted, but some money was made for releasing the code as well, giving an actual benefit for them to do this thing. What they did - released Jagged Alliance Wildfire - includes the source code, but ya have to go out and buy it to get it.

So would that work? Would you all be willing to pay 20 bucks for a rerelease of aow1, w/source code? Obviously they wouldn't sell many copies, and they probably wouldn't do like w/wildfire and actually sell it in stores or anything (rather, just to us), but it'd be something and it would help limit the spread of the code.

heck, if all 100 of us put in 20 bucks they might be willing to just directly sell to us a limited license to use the code for such an old game. Not a ton of money for them, but its an old game that's not making them money anyhow. Then they could put some restrictions on how we use the code through the license to protect whatever interests they still have in the code, the product, trademarks, copyrights, products we make using their code, etc... and could keep us from competing w/future products of theirs.

Of course, having the source is useless without all of the resources (ie. all the images, scenarios) but at least we'd be able to get at some of the 'hard-coded' stuff like upgrade costs without hacking through it with a hex editor.

So far, 47 ... Not counting those who yell "I'm in!" here at the forum but do not send me an e-mail. When we reach 60, I'll start a new discussion about the contents of the petition.

If BTOOIC has 82 83 members, why do we only have 48 emails?

Because many members are not active.

Hell, sign me up, I've already sent an email. I didn't much care for AoW2, but AoW1 has got to be my favorite game of all time, even above Dominions 2! Ah, the memories of the golden era of AoW1...

Well, I posted topic about petition on AoW2 forum two weeks ago, but nobody replied it (although someone might send Smurf Hero e-mail). Just few minutes before I posted thread about it on Valley of Wonders (Strategy Planet), so maybe someone from there will join the petition...
