Topic Subject: BUG - Asus G1S & Nvidia 8600M GT graphic problems!
posted 10-01-07 05:37 AM EDT (US)
Hi all,
I play AoW-SM from many years, and a couple of months ago I bought a new notebook.
It is an Asus G1S, here the main charateristics of my system:

- CPU Intel Core 2 Duo T7500
- RAM 2 GB
- Graphic card nvidia 8600M GT
- HDD 160 GB SATA

I use the notebook not at the native resolution (1680x1050) but at the resolution of 1280x800.
The problem starts only few minutes after launching AoW-SM; I begin to see many stripes of hexagons that starting from the high-left corner of the screen goes till the center.

My first question: where can I place some screenshots to make you see the graphical defect?

Note: my notebook came in the original pack with Windows Vista (bleah!) that I uninstalled and then replaced with Windows XP.
On the Asus website there are no graphic drivers for this notebook for Windows XP, so I used the modded driver provided by www.laptopvideo2go.com

Here all that I tryied, but the defect persists:

- Format and reinstall Windows XP many times;
- Change 5 or 6 different versions of graphic drivers;
- Changing resolution to 1280x800, 1440x900, native resolution of 1680x1050;
- Connect an external 19" LCD monitor to the VGA port.

The problem is always there.
The only way to stop the mad hexagones I found is that if during the game i press the Windows key to see the desktop and then return to the AoW-SM window, the graphical defect disappear, and is it so for all the duration of the game (since I close and restart AoW-SM).

The problem is not of my notebook, cause all the other 3D games works perfectly and without graphical defect, I tested all the other games for hours and so I run many times 3DMark for some hours...

I changed the graphic drivers many times, so... it is possible that is a problem of AoW-SM with my 8600M GT graphic card?!
Someone of you have ever tryied to play AoW-SM on a notebook equipped with this graphic card or with a recent 8000 series nvidia (also on desktop PCs)?

Thank you for the support, I will soon add the links to the screenshots If I will found the way to do that!
Bye...!

Well, I've never used a notebook computer before...but I have posted screenshots and I have experienced graphical glitches that seem to randomly "come and go" while playing (or trying to play) AOW:SM.

To post a screenshot, the screenshot must first be uploaded (hosted) on "a photo host site" (there are very many to choose from) where you will be given a URL for it.

After you have the URL for your uploaded screenshot, just post a link to that URL here in this forum. (See the BB Code for instructions if you don't know how to post a link).

Hint: If you ever see anything in some post and wonder how the author accomplished something...just open an edit to their post (you must be logged on first) and closely examine (you can view but not edit) that post's construction. Note...locked/closed threads can't be viewed in edit mode.

About graphical glitches...I don't know why but I usually throw the glitching behavior off (make it stop futzing around) by adjusting the mouse wheel and sometimes maybe the glitching could be instigated inadvertently by adjusting the mouse wheel. Either way, that is the solution which works well for me.

Good luck! I Hope for your rapid success.

Did you try downloading the nvidia drivers from nvidia itself? afaik, they are not OS-specific, so you should be able to get them.
Have you tried other games on this system? Also, how did you install the XP drivers on the G1S? Did you slipstream them into the XP install disk?

Hi, thanks for the answer.
My notebook has all the Windows XP drivers installed, all drivers have been downloaded from the manufacturer website of the components.
All works fine, no problems also with all the other 3D games that run perfectly as the 3DMark 2006.
Since I have tryied about 5 or 6 different kind of Nvidia graphic drivers I don't think the problem is here... but I did't download the drivers from Nvidia website cause for the notebook video card they didn't release drivers (you should contact directly Asus, which didn't have drivers for Windows XP cause the notebook is only selled with Windows Vista).
I will try first to download the latest Nvidia drivers from their website and then I will modify them with the INF provided from www.laptopvideo2go.com.
I have tryied to disable anti-aliasing, as described on AoW manual, but the problem remains...
I will post soon the link for the screenshots, I'm sure they will be very interesting for all the community!
Thanks again!

Hi all again,
here the screenshots of the problem...
The stripes occurs also during the normal game, not only in the battles...
To solve the problem i actually press the "Windows" key to go to Desktop an then I click on the AoW on the taskbar to recover the game, and the stripes are gone!
I have tryied everything about the drivers, at least 10 or 12 different version, modded, originals, etc, but the error persists...
Is there anyone with a notebook with 8600M GT graphic card?
The stripes are visible also at different resolution, and also on an external monitor... so the problem doesn't depend by my LCD panel.
This is the only game with that defect, the other games and 3DMark runs perfectly.
Any suggestions?

Ah, the stripes are not visible when i am in a game screen with the fog of war, but starts immediatly when the fog of war ends... always from the left top corner to the center of the screen...
Thank you.
