I haven't heard of anyone doing this, or even trying.

Wine was the only known Windows emulator project back in -94, but it might have changed since. I haven't really kept myself up-to-date... Is Wine still the only one around? Working? Free?

What's Winex?

Well
Wine is still free.
Wine is still around and doing good. Winex is based on Wine of course.

Winex : www.transgaming.comalso a Windows emulater for Linux.
But more for Games. With DirectX support.

I really want to play it in Linux.
Windows is not my Operating System of preference.

No promises, but I might be able to test it (some day). I doubt that it would work, though.
posted 11-03-03 04:42 AM EDT (US)     4 / 54
Well Warcraft III and Starcraft Works without any issues.

The more people want to play it Linux , the more people would want to make is work.

It's a win win situation.
More Platforms, More Players and More Fans.

I would think if you can get the *crafts to run, AoW shouldn't have any issues. The important things would be to get DirectX working somehow. What version of DirectX does Wine support?

You can get the AoW2 demo for free from this site and try to run it.

Good luck!

If people are able to run recent RPG games with that combination (and I've seen a detailed description to get Divine Divinity running with it), AoW:SM might work, too.
The only problem is the proper configuration.
posted 11-04-03 07:53 AM EDT (US)     8 / 54
Oh, so Hobbledehoy has already tested and failed to get AoW:SM to run on Linux through Wine? What happens (just curious)?

Well, no point in me trying to do the same thing then. I'm obviously less experienced with Wine than he is.

Well I'm posting some links to ScreenShots.

I need help with this Config
If I only can eliminate the DirectX and replace with GL

My guess is that you would have a better chance at getting help with this is on linux/wine forum. But please let us know how it goes! I hope you can get it to work!

Looks promising!

I noticed you are using AoWSM v1.0.
Perhaps you can also somehow patch it to 1.3?

I am very interested. playing AOW:SM was my only reason for buying a Windows 2000 and having a Windows partition around. dual booting is getting on my nerves.

I have been using OS/2 in the past (still using on some machines) where a similar project to Wine exists. this is named Odin (odin.netlabs.org) and is able to play HOMM3, StarCraft, Quake 2 and the like pretty well. I have been able to nearly get AOW1 working, the map editor wored just fine, but AOW2 and AOW:SM - no go.

now I am on Linux and still have this Windows partition on my main machine - would be great if I could play in Linux. so far I got the impression that Transgaming was not very interested in AOW because of the apparent lack of interest.

please tell in detail how playable SM seems to you and what exact version of WineX you are using and how.

eagerly awaiting your advice,

Carsten

Hi,

I would also be *very* interested in how you made it run! In fact, i just registered here for posting this .

I give a try to AoWSM every time there's a new winex version, but so far it never worked... With the last version(4.0), the install fails just after showing the progress bars, with a "Cannot open AVI" error message. Then the progress bars don't start to complete.

Please tell us . I would really love to play it again...

I guess he did the install in a regular MS Windows and transfered the files or he even has a Windows partition that he accesses from Linux.

still, he is more successfull than I am. :-(

kind regards,
Poldi

http://blackmasque.dyndns.org/~pacula/aow2-cedega2.jpg

I have it working.

It's far from perfect - in fact, the final bit to make the game playable is ugly, but it does allow the game to install and run. Unfortunately, it's not a trivial thing to set up, so I'm going to attempt to write a full-fledged how-to on the subject and will pass it along as soon as it's ready.

This thread died over a year ago... Is anybody interested in ressurecting the idea???

I've just installed wine (ver. 20050725) and tried to run AoWSM. Unfortunately the old problem with mouse and keybord still exists... However, there are two exceptions!

1. When Display Mode is set to Window and D3D is turned off, the mouse and the keyboard sometimes are active, but they react very slowly, so the game isn't really enjoyable. Despite this I managed to start a map and play a few turns... Here is the screenshot (sorry for the bad quality):

I don't know what is the reason... It seems to be happening randomly. Around 10% of my attempts were succesful.

2. When Display Mode is set to Full Screen and D3D is turned on, the mouse is always active and it seems to react a little faster than in previous case (keyboard doesn't work at all). Everything is working fine until I try to start a map. The game halts when loading proccess is complete.

I am using AoWSM version 1.3 without cd protection. The other 1.3 version didn't work at all.

I'm a linux newbie, I've never seen Wine before, so I hope that more experienced users will achieve much better results.

Cool, I am also newbeeing in linux and I think we are using the same version . I hope you one day solve this problem, because this game is the only thing that keeps me using XP at all.

New version (Wine 20050930) was released last week, but it didn't improve anything Perhaps we should email Triumph Studios. It's unlikely they will be able to help us, but it's our only chance... What do you think JS?

Hi!
I've never used Cedega... Is it possible to run SM using Cedega if you already have AoWSM installation (copied from Windows partition)??

Have you tried to run/install SM using Wine recently??

Cheers!

Howdy,
Great News ....
I got AOWSM running in Cedega 5.
It's roughly going to be the same as Pacula howto,
But a more quick and dirty version.
I will be posting a Howto soon.
Tomorrow is a Public Holiday so I'll type it out with Screenies and everything.

Good News so far.
It's seems that Zero_Dogg has gotten a AOWSM Installer for Linux working, it's still super ALPHA.

even better news: it is not neccessary to use a 5.x version of Cedega. I am now playing AoW:SM 1.4 with Cedega 4.2.1. this is by the way the version that plays Civilization 3 & AddOns best. Civ3 is broken in Cedega 5.0+.

thanks for the HOWTO. the missing clue for me was adding the empty dpnet.dll file.

now I am finally breaking out of vmware (making this quite some faster).

thanks again.
