Tired of having to buy AoW-sm for $300+ on eBay!? Those days are over.

TS told me they are putting the AoW series online (on Steam), putting an end to the game not being easily available anymore. There will also be links to our site and forum and so we can expect some renewed interest here as well! So yeah, you all be on your best behaviour!

See the announcement here: http://ageofwonders.com/. They are expecting the games to be available near the end of this months (if not earlier).

Good news!

Now I only wish that TS would allow the upatch/mod community to develop the game further. I mean something like Paradox did with Europa Universalis II, allowing the fans to make an updated version called For the Glory. I have so many ideas about things that could be added/improved in the game, and I'm sure the other members of the community have lots of them too.

Just dreaming.

Really good news even when we in Germany never pay so much for the game. 1-5€ is enough and you have it when you check our ebay.

Letīs count the number of ideas for improvements...
103.040.201... no 103.040.202!
Yes, yes!

Maybe it is s good time to ask for the SC then.
Now they are grabbing out their old stuff what means the deal with AoW just now. Some manpower is thinking about AoW at TS or wherever and now it is a good time to ask this people for an extra kick (developing AoW by the community).

What do you think? Itīs time now.

Edit.: Side note!
They have made a new logo and it shows the full red AoW I dragon in the back! (with wings!)
Bah! Man! I want this one! I had not expected they have more of it as they show in AoW I. Now I see they betray us all the time!
Hey you devs!
Canīt you see that we need every pixel of this game to survive!?
So please, please let us develop this old game and help us with tools and anything you like to give away like this images and basic stuff.

Just dreaming.
Bearing in mind how long UPatch 1.5 has been a project for, dreaming is probably good way to describe it!

I think allowing us to change the source code would bring new energy into the project, at least I would dedicate much more time to it, I could assume the role of the lead programmer. The current upatch project doesn't involve much programming, except some additional tools that we're planning (race/mod switcher, campaign interface) that can be integrated into the main game and setup program if we have the SC.

I think the same. It would give us a big boost if we get the SC and we would see fantastic new things.
And the energy level would raise to max or break the scale.

Wow ,great news indeed.
More players,more dreamers,more new ideas.
I love this game and its community.
I will not go of topic so I will continue in the scenario design section.

I logged on during my vacation, just to comment on this

Steam is absolutely the best platform ever!!!!

I wonder if they'll do some code to make multiplayer work with it, doing away the need for hamachi etc etc.

I'm going to send copies to all my friends

Hell, that's really good news! ^^

Age of Wonders has a permanent place in my heart. Its good to see TS didn't forget it .

Hoping they release the SC to you guys as well, I know all your brilliant minds would bring a lot of good changes to this game .

Many TBS fans are keeping their eyes on Elemental, from Stardock, but I would like very much to see a sequel to this series ^^. Age of Wonders has the potential to be the ultimate fantasy TBS, it just needs a little nudge .

Are you threatning me master jedi?

When I recall the time when AoW was first built, I assume the code isn't even in object oriented programming. And they probably never made a documentation. A new AoW from Triumph would or should be rebuilt from scratch to make it maintainable. - A nice idea, as long as they don't make a silly children game out of it! (Never simplify a running game! )

The code is written in Delphi (Object Pascal), so it is object-oriented programming. Many class names can be seen when viewing the exe file.

Does this possibly mean Triumph Studios are re-looking at developing another version of AoW, using Steam to cement the user-base?

I can only hope. Age of Wonders has been my favourite game since it came out.

That's pretty doubtful, considering how old Shadow Magic is now. But then again, I don't know anything about popularity leading to resurgence in games.

If they don't have plans, they should make code and graphix open source! After all that time this would be an elegant step giving respect to the fan community.
posted 08-07-10 08:43 AM EDT (US)     19 / 50
They are going to sell the game on Steam, so they won't make it open source anytime soon. But they can give the source code to the selected members of the community (with NDA signed), so we can make an updated version of the game.

Ha ha, cool, now when people ask us if there is a way to legally download AoW, we'll be able to tell them "yes" and direct them there!

I know! When people ask about downloads I'll have to suppress my moderator instincts not to instantly hide the thread and warn the person their account is at risk of suspension, etc...
I believe the download doesn't come with any copy protection. Life will be so much easier for us moderators.

Absolutely terrific news. I can't wait to gift some copies to friends.

The German version (also runs the English) should still be available for around EUR 10,-. Just have a look!

I took the trouble to legalize my friend's (;-)) copy, signed to German ebay and ordered the game (7Euro + 14 Euro Shipping). Was a a pain in the back (the only words I managed to understand without translation were "credit card" and "street"), and few monthes later there still is nothing in the mail box... Who cares, at least my friend paid his duty to the society

Great news. Myself, my original disk stopped working years ago and have had to search high and low for the official first version 1.3 patch etc to allow me to play this great game.

Nice site btw. Been stopping in now and then for several years and have always wanted to participate in the pbem forums.

At the risk of being off-topic and discussing something in a recently closed thread, I just found myself thinking about how active the turn logs forum is right now. It is nice to see this much activity for a game that was released so many years ago now! This is hardly a dead forum, or a dead game, and I hope it gets even livelier when TS re-releases the AoW Trilogy!

This raises a question for existing players/owners of the game. Will we be able to benefit from this? I mean being able to play without having to insert the CD-ROM into the drive? This has been such a pain for so many year trying to keep a good shape of the disc. It would be nice if the existing owners of the game will be able to play the game without CD-ROM when the digital version is released.
