I thought this forum would be a nice place to start an initiative. Those of us who have spent a lot of time mapmaking know that it is a long journey. A journey full of discoveries and insights, but also many frustrations!

Lets start a series called: The making of...

Take your favourite map you made and start a topic. For searching purposes on this site, please have it start with The making of..., followed by the title of your map. Each post, you can elaborate on a big or small aspect of a map that has an interesting story or 'lesson' attached to it. It would be great if you can add pictures of your map to illustrate things with. Using screenshots (Prnt Scrn button on your keyboard) you can take shots. If you like, you can send them to me, and I will (after some time) host them and provide you with the link to have them show in your thread.

I hope that this way people might get inspired to start taking on mapmaking and appreciating the art and effort even more. It might also become a valuable resource of knowledge, because making a big map is a huge learning experience. Lastly, I think it can also be a lot of fun. I know some people put a lot of personal stuff in their maps, and it would be great to learn more about these legendary maps and what went on in the minds of their creators!

That is a great idea, Beren-V, and I am sure would make a great read! Maybe the mod forum would be a good place for that, though.

Yes, that's certainly one thing I know oh so well. And the most irritating thing is, I can't even give you any info on what is sucking out the blood from underneath my nails, as it's a secret map! [cries a little bit]
Untill the upcoming 1v1 PBeM mapmaking contest releases its maps, I have to be silent about everything! [cries a little bit more]
And I'm not even sure if this year there will be a 1v1 PBeM tournament!
So if you will excuse me [wipes tears away] I'm going to hit the event-editor with this hammer [big & bulky, with spikes on top], in the idle hope it will finally do what I want it to do... One has to do something with his frustrations...

Edit: Ha, the hammer worked! Take that, you editor! One less event to crunch.

Yes, the editor for AOW2:SM is very very picky. For many cases everything has to be setup only one specific way for it to work... and some stuff is just broken.

For example it means if you have the numbers 3, 7 and 10 which you want to create 20... then only the perfect setup will work in the realm of the AOW2:SM editor.
This means 3 + 10 + 7 would not work.
This means 7 + 10 + 3 would not work.

And only when setup as 10 + 7 + 3 does it work to create 20. This can be very frustrating I know.

The good news is many games have editors which are much worse and more complex. Some games don't even have editors. When compared to other games the AOW2:SM editor is actually above average, but any improvements will have to wait until AOW3.

Does anyone know how to use the buildings whithin a city on the mapmaker?? ive seen it in a few screenshots as of late. this would really help me ty

S.E.M. 2.0 ... as soon as UPatch 1.5 gets released, there'll be S.E.M. 3.0

With this nice little tool (actually, it's more a bit of a mod) you can put amazing stuff in an outpost, or put any ability on a hero/object

Offcourse, waiting on UPatch 1.5 will give you way more options, but that'll be still sort of a long wait ( my guess is not more as 1,5 years from now, max )

Unless you mean putting "fence" buildings in a city, which is always possible -as a fence doesn't have any game-play value- though I don't think you can use them in the true center of a city (not tried yet, weirdly enough), nor the fields surrounding a city.

You can put anything you like in the fields surrounding the city - just raze the city, put things there and "unraze" it (I know this trick from The Groll).
