1. What do you think about add a mounted archer?
It may be, for example, Elf(or Dark Elf) Rider - their cavalry is weak now.
Then you can you some new tactics - strike with small group
of riders and then retreat.

2. Also I think Dwarves should have Crossbowmen instead of archers - they can fire once per turn, but have more damage.

3. sorry for mistakes

A good name for this "new" unit might be Centaur

Centaurs have "strike" ability, and they're strong arm-to-arm fighters.
Mounted archers this is just more quick archers - they cannot defend themself in close fight.
I propose this unit instead of II level drow(elf) cavalry so their scouts will be more useful.

I agree that by playing with range number of shots, speed and dmage we could have a lot of variety in this game, which would be really nice.

Actually, with the way the mix of units is now, making the dark elf rider an archer would be a great way to make a not-so-useful unit useful. They don't hit hard enough anyway, so making them archers instead would work. They may be the weakest low-level cavalry, although I have always disliked frog riders.

It would be interesting to add crossbows to give more variety in missile attacks. I might make humans as well as dwarves use crossbows. Heck, maybe orcs as well.

As for mounted cavalry:

There will be a Tigran Catmaster, which shoots arrows from the back of a sabretooth and the Archon Charioteer.

Sounds good! BTW, nice to see you around the forums a bit more Lennart! I hope some of the other Triumph staff stops by as well. We're beginnig to think you and Josh are the only two people working on AoW2!

Mmmm sweet... wait.. hang on.. does this mean that the Highman paladin might be getting the chop to replace the charioteer? Or will there be more units per city? Anyone know?

More likely the Valkyrie. That would be in line with the move toward drawing units from the underlying race, and would still give the Archons an L3 unit comparable to the heavy cavalry of other races. It would take away a flyer, but again, with the move away from creatures (and Dragons as racial units perhaps) many other races will be losing the flyers/floaters they have now as well.

And another one suggestion from MOM...
How about giving "Large Shield" ability to swordsman, which will raise thier defense against range weapons(or just bows&slings, mb, not breath and bolts..)
Then we'll can use swordsman, we'll can put them before archers, we'll can use Tactics in combat.
I don't need unusable units in game and i want clever opponents to fight, and you?

Rumours say that there will be such an ability.

Well, that would on the other hand mean that muskets (or longbows/crossbows) would render the shields way less effective. While that would be a pretty nifty feature, I somehow doubt we'll see it.

Good point, Calanor; and musketeers need some help as they are now, what with ballistas having superior firepower and lower upkeep. My idea to help musketeers would have been to allow them to strike as pikemen though (bayonets).

Mounted archers would really help the light and dark elves, whose riders weren't really designed for melee anyway, but that could lead to some really cheap tactics, especially against the short races.

Re: dwarven and orcish crossbowmen, I can handle that idea since dwarves and orcs have a little more melee power than average, and a bit less dexterity. Historically, crossbows were used by regular troops, rather than specialist archers, as less skill was required. They fired more slowly, and at less range, but were better for penetrating armor. I might give them a single shot at 5/3 versus an archer's two shots at 3/2.

Speaking of ranged devices, why did the flamethrower go from terrifying to pathetic somewhere around the second or third patch anyway?
