Topic Subject: The Year of The ZRAT
posted 01-09-04 03:10 AM EDT (US)
I joined this forum in 2003, and made it my mission to rate as many maps as I could, to in some small way repay those mapmakers whose work I enjoy so much. I have tried to be fair in my ratings and if critical to be critical in a positive way so as to allow the mapmaker to improve upon his or her work. I hope my map ratings have been helpful. I would like now to start a new tradition...

THE ZRAT AWARDS!!

Here are my five nominations for the five best downloads of 2003:

1) Beren V - The Arda Mapset

I haven't used this very much yet, but I did follow the threads which the author used to solicit input from the forum. The sheer amount of quality input from many different sources made this a download which any serious LOTR Fan must have!

2) Laurentius - Aow1 New Units

This download has the potential to really impact the AOW we play in 2004. If map makers and modders can put these units into their work a whole new era of AOW may be born.

3) Eriksson - Road to Hell

This map won the Single player map making competition in the summer. Although I voted for a different map, I must bow to the sentiment of the other judges and call this the best small Single Player map made in 2003

4) Dan Petersson - Divine Chess

Again another winner in the 2003 map makers competition, this time for best small multiplayer map.

5) Arctic Wolf - The Orcs Of the Southron Kingdom V2.1

I called this the most significant download in the history of this forum when I rated it, And the two other persons who rated it agreed with me, one of whom gave it the rare 5.0/5.0 score. This download contained more than 60 maps, most of which were sheer pleasure to play.

Congratulations to the nominees, now lets have some votes by others for the winner! (P.S. You can vote for any download you want even if I haven't nominated it, just make sure you vote for one that was uploaded in 2003)

That's excellent, Daemon Zrat!

Maybe this can inspire more people to rate maps too? Wonderful initiative!

B.t.w., I fixed that spelling type in the topic title.

Thanx Nojd.

I fixed some of my other spelling too. If you really like this idea maybe it can make a splash on your news page?

Cool!

I might suggest crediting SmurfHero's campaign and graphics editor. It's what made Arctic Wolf's campaign possible. I, meanwhile, should credit Warlock for his mod, since the Arda Mapset is a further modification of it.

Congratulations to all the nominated people!

I would however (like Beren V already noted) inlcude SmurfHero and his AoWCGE.

It's a great tool and I think 2 of the nominated people wouldn't have been able to complete their work without it.

Actually, I did post a news flash about it as soon as I could! But it's of course only on the AoW Heaven site, not AoW2 Heaven (since this is about AoW1 scenarios): The Zrat Awards!

Concur with Beren V. Cool!!

Also wish to extend my thanks to Smurfhero as without his aid as well as his awesome program I would not ever have even uploaded a single map.

Haven't tried to use the new units yet but maybe...

Also Eriksson and Dan Petersson are awesome mapmakers so their nominations are well deserved.

Also thanks to Daemon Zrat whose great map ratings are much appreciated, keep them coming!!

BTW Are we supposed to vote? Why not honor all five, each in its separate category? (Alhough perhaps I'm biased here.) (Smiles)

All the credit in the world goes to Smurfhero and his AoWGE and to Warlock for his Mod! However, each of these contributions came prior to 2003.

My intent was to honor the best downloads of 2003. Sorry if this was confusing.

Also From Arctic Wolf:

Honoring all five is swell, but I still would like to have some votes for the best overall. Also input regarding any map or mod I may have overlooked is appreciated!

AoWCGE came before 2003? Wow, time really does fly!
