I just did battle in such a case, where I know it rounded down. My only shot was a critical hit with seven damage and when it struck, it did three damage. However, it must round up with only one damage hits

It should be pointed out that a flying physical-protected creature is immune to all those magic-strike heavies as long as it's got a ranged attack.
Liquid form on a dragon is really scary. Mark II or higher archers still have their damage reduced a bit, and mark I arrows are no better than hurled stones. Check out the reduction in damage from ballistas, dragonships and air galleys!
Worst case: blessed, stone-skinned, liquid form gold dragons...

Kris, I'm never sure about anything I remember. But I had hurl boulder, which I think had damage 7, and as I recall the physically protected hero suffered damage of 3. He was high defense, so my only chance was for a critical hit.

There's always a chance, even with very low attack against very high defence, of a hit getting through and causing max dam - i.e. a critical hit. It's not actually always critical to the unit hit in terms of it dying outright.
