Warlock's Rule-Set (Mod Pack)

Warlock Warlock's Rule-Set is the only known mod pack to AOW. It changes the game dramatically, altering game mechanics and units. In the AOW Heaven Downloads section, if a map file has a "Y" in the "WR" column, then that map was made to be played ONLY with Warlock's Rule-Set installed.

VERY IMPORTANT! You cannot play "regular" AOW maps while Warlock's Rules is on. See below to configure your start-up short-cuts so that you can easily switch between the two (Warlock's and Regular).

Here are the basic installation instructions:

Age Of Wonders v1.36.0053 - INSTALL - Warlock's Rule-Set v1.10 July 2000

This set of rules has been tested with AoW v1.36.0053.

If Triumph Studios (TS) releases a newer patch version above v1.36, then do not use this rule-set with that higher version.

Ensure you have quit AoW before starting. You need to have already installed TS's AoW patch 1.36. You will also need atleast 20MB of free harddisk space - make sure.


INSTALL in 4 easy steps (Knowledge of DOS is beneficial)

1. FIND
-Find the downloaded file. Filename WR136110.EXE It is a self extracting zip ("sez").

2. RUN
2-1. Run WR136106
2-2. Extract contents to your AoW game directory
2-3. Enter Destination folder, examples: C:GAMESAOW or C:Program FilesTriumph StudiosAge of Wonders
2-4. Click UnZip. No files will be lost. The patch contains sub-directory information.
2-5. Click OK and Close.

3. PATCH
After the sez has extracted:
3-1. Open a ms-dos command box.
3-2. Goto game directory (Example: CD GAMESAOW) and type:
3-3. Rules [enter]
3-4. Follow the given simple directions.

4. RULES
The patch will now be compiled and ready.
However, the patch does not initialise Warlock's Rule-Set by default, everything will work exactly as it did prior to this installation.
To play with the new rules type:
Rules Warlock [enter]
Then start the game.
To go back to the original rules type:
Rules TS136 [enter]

DONE!

Feedback to Warlock's Rule-Set

Feel free to simplify things for yourself and make two shortcuts, one for TS rules, and another for Warlock rules.
New - Shortcut
Browse for rules.bat and add a space then "Warlock"
Example: C:GAMESAOWRULES.BAT WARLOCK
Example: "C:GAMESAge of WondersRULES.BAT" WARLOCK
Next, Name it anything. Eg AoW-Rules-Warlock
Next, Pick any icon and click finish.
Repeat for TS136.

NOTES
-------------------

You must quit and reload AoW after changing your Rule-Set.

You will get an Out-Of-Sync error if you are using a different Rule-Set.

AoW sometimes gets out-of-sync errors even with the same original rule-set.

Because of the increased cost of some skills, heroes
may have negative skill points to spend, or less than 10.

In some cases, some units may have more than their maximum hitpoints. This is temporary for the first turn only.

Only do FC if it is certain to be convenient for ALL players involved.

OTHER INSTALLATION TIPS
===========================================

To get to MS-DOS, you should have an "MS-DOS Prompt" option on your Programs Start menu in Windows 95/98. Make sure you extract the Warlock's Rules to the directory in which your game was installed? The default is to C:Program FilesTriumph StudiosAge of Wonders

After you do the install, set up shortcuts somewhere (on your desktop, on your start menu, somewhere) for the Rules Warlock and Rules TS136 commands so you'll be able to easily start them seperately.

Remember that you need to put Warlock's Rules into the actual AoW directory in which the game was installed, which for most people will be c:program files riumph studiosage of wonders.

In addition, when you create shortcuts for the rules, don't forget to find the rules.bat and add "warlock" for the Warlock rules, then make another shortcut and add "TS136."

It will look like this to run the game under standard rules:

"C Program FilesTriumph StudiosAge of WondersRules.bat" ts136

and like this to play the game with WR's:

"C Program FilesTriumph StudiosAge of WondersRules.bat" warlock

IF USING WINDOWS 2000
You have to use "rules2 " versus "rules". IIRC rules.bat invokes COMMAND by name rather then via %comspec% to run rules2.bat and this might cause problems if the DOS session does not inherit the right environment. Of course, I run 4NT/4DOS so I tend to look see such things a lot, YMMV.

DiseaseCloud pushed up a level and higher mana because the spell was
CPU intensive and took a long time to cast.
Vaporize made level-3 because the current Air level-3 spell is poor.
CallFlames was simply made a little more interesting.

Spells of longer range open up various new strategies.
Can give an advantage to an attacking hero/leader.
