This XL map is virtually all played on the surface, with a notable absence of teleporters. It is balanced for MP and PBEM games, with 3 playable evil races (Goblins/Orcs/Dark Elves), 3 playable good races (Elves/Halflings/Dwarves), 2 playable neutral races (Azracs/Frostlings), and another neutral race (Humans) controlled by the AI. Keep your eyes open and see how many references to LotR places, characters and items you can find in this map!
THE STORY:
It was S.R. 1145, and the Hobbit chieftain Bandobras Took had heard a rumour that the Orcs were again preparing for war. It was nothing unusual for Orcs to be spoiling for a fight, but this time their forces were quite substantial, if the reports were to be believed
There were regular incursions from the snowy northern lands of wolves, and a variety of even more fearsome creatures that could survive in that frosty climate. The Hobbits had started calling these strange creatures Frosties. Of course the Hobbits would have preferred to live in peace, but this was a case of either choosing to fight, or being enslaved by the rampaging Orcs
As the Hobbits sent emissaries to Elbareth of the Elves and Thorin Oakenshield of the Dwarves, warning of the danger and asking for assistance, the Orcs were rapidly garnering the support of the ever-obedient Goblins and the Dark Elves, with their abiding distrust and distate for their erstwhile elven colleagues that had stayed on the right side of the law
Also an increasing number of sightings were coming in throughout the Shire of Black Riders. These were full-sized black horses, much bigger than Hobbit-ponies, on each horse a large man who seemed to crouch in the saddle, wrapped in a great black cloak and hood, so that only their boots in the high stirrups showed below, their faces shadowed and invisible. The riders seemed to rely as much upon smell as sight, and curious snuffling noises could sometimes be heard emanating from their mysterious hoods. Those who had seen them fight referred to them as executioners, for they fought with great ferocity and seemed to steal the life from their opponents, becoming ever stronger as their foe withered away in both strength and ability. It was reported that all the evil leaders now had private escorts of Black Riders, and that single Black Riders had been seen in many woods around the shire, often travelling at night. Nobody was sure why they were searching in the Shire, but people were uneasy about this unknown menace, lurking in the shadows
Rumours were also rife that the desert people were again on the move, with their belligerent chieftain Arghh having mobilised their forces for war, and it would not be unknown for them to join up with the Orcs if they thought that they could benefit financially from the battles. There were troubled times ahead!
