While I was browsing the Civilization Fanatics site in search for new unit graphics (and they do have a lot of great usable units!), I noticed that there is a petition going on to ask game publishers Atari to release the source code for Civilization II. I think we should do the same for Age of Wonders! After all, the game is over 5 years old now, and has been succeeded by 2 newer titles in the same series. I doubt that AoW 1 has any real commercial value left to the publishers. The technology inside is probably very much aged by now, so from a competitior's point of view there's not much left there either. So maybe, just maybe, we could persuade them.

But why should we?

Well, if nothing else, we could use the source code to finally get all the pieces together of the used file formats for graphics, campaigns, unit stats, rule sets, etc. We could fix some bugs that are still there, either in the game itself or in the editor. We could build in support for multiple rule sets and/or campaigns. Maybe add a new feature or two ...

How's that sound? If you like this, please send me an email containing your name and valid email address (which I will keep in a safe place of course). If we get enough names (let's say 100 for starters) I will do my best to get this petition to the right place. Speaking of which: would that be Triumph Studios or Take Two?

Anyway, let's get this list growing!

UPDATE 2006-04-01:

Take 2 Interactive is not responding to my messages, either by email or 'classic' mail. Therefore, I am afraid that we will have to let go of this idea.

I thank you all for your interest and support.

Hey! Great idea!!

I had a similar thought, but I wasn't sure how to go about it.

Starting a petition is a good way to start. Sign me up!

Or perhaps they will sell the source code, to tide whatever minute commercial value it has left. Because I'm thinking of playing this on Linux, as well. We can always improve it. Good idea.

Update: we already have 6 people on the list! Only 94 more to go! At the current speed, this will only take 5 more years.

(Any bright ideas, anyone?)

Allright, maybe we should have another look at the possibilities:

- Implement tactical combat for multi-player games (that's not available right now, is it? - never played MPG before)

- Play AoW on Linux

- Natively support multiple campaigns/rule sets

- Have regular units use magic

And these are just the straightforward things ...

Oh well. Maybe I should just move on to Plan B.

There are a few things in AoW2 that should be implemented for AoW.

I think one of the greatest improvements was the limited retaliation and sort of related the correlation of possible shots to remaining movement.

You are now front page news.

I think you should send the petition to Triumph, they would know were to send it on if they can't make the decision.

I'm in! Has this releaseing of the source code for a game ever been done before?

Quoted from Magog:

Hehehe .. I thought something was going on when I opened my mailbox and found five new petitioners ... (is that a word, petitioners?)

By the way: should we bother the AoW II/SM community with this? A lot of them have moved on from AoW I, but they might still carry some warm feelings for it.

Quoted from Magog:

I think you should send the petition to Triumph, they would know were to send it on if they can't make the decision.

I think so too. Now, only 85 or so more people to back me up ...

Quoted from Snively:

Yes it has! Wolfenstein 3D for instance (the Mother of all 3D First Person Shoot-Em-Ups), Civilization: Call To Powers II (in fact, that's what inspired the Civ II community to ask for "their" source code), Quake also I believe ... Even Microsoft did it recently to some space game! Can't remember its name though. So it's not unique in any way.

I'd like to just see the source. I doubt I'd add any improvements to it; probably just make it as unplayable as possible; but I would like to take a look at it.

Hi, Sweden here. I would like to see the source code released to. A little AoW:SM mixed with AoW 1 would do wonders I believe

There is "wrong" and there is "more wrong"; unfortunatelly there is no such thing as "right" even less "more right".

I now have received e-mails from almost 40 people! This is starting to look serious ...

Should we also drop a note at the AoW2 forums? I'm sure that a lot of the former AoW players who have moved on to AoW2/SM still have warm feelings for the Mother of All AOWs.

I've wandered through the AoW2/SM forums a few times and heard people complain about things missing from AoW1, so yes, people over there do still remember it. I also saw some old, old people (remember Jomungur, who wrote this?) so yes, AoW2/SM is popular with the veterans, but there are also a few purists, as well as those who dabble in both. AoW1 is still my favorite, but I don't have SM.
