A couple of people basically stinking up the place every time someone posts something they don't like, throwing all kinds of flamebombs around, calling people names and then getting all in high dudgeon when someone else asks them to be a bit more polite and to play nice.
We just got our first thread lock today when Lennart stepped in. Good thing too. In the interests of full disclosure, I was a participant in that thread and in the tangent that got it locked, but damned if I was going to just stand aside and watch the umpteenth repetition of the same act from the sidelines.
Like I said there, I'd rather foster a polite and courteous community, but if some kid with an attitude thinks he can make me back down by some harsh language, boy are they in for a surprise. That sort of people sometimes mistake a preference for courtesy for weakness, but it can be a rude shock to them when they find there's an iron fist inside the velvet glove.
I've learned down the years that (both online and in the real world) the worst thing that can be done is let a bully go uncontested and the sooner confronted, the less damage is done overall. I moderate a couple of boards and actually administer two (the Illwinter forums for Dominions 3 and Conquest of Elysium 3 on Desura) and a firm but courteous approach has been the most productive way forward every time. In all those places people know that while I prefer amicable resolution, I won't back down from a confrontation or even swinging the axe if need be.
I hope the few problem children on the official boards learn and settle down, but if not, things will come to a head and there will be bannings over there.
This place has always been a tightly run ship, like Heaven Games in general and the people picked to moderate it top notch folks. I'm not familiar with most of the staff here, other than ChowGuy, since my activities dropped off before most of them joined, never mind became mods, but they've done an excellent job so far.
