Really doesn't surprise me - there were plenty of hints well before the official teasing started.

(Personally, I find it entirely understandable - in the current market, announcing too early and giving the fanbase any indication of what you're doing tends to lead to your competitors stealing your ideas before you can release. Seen it happen before.)

I have been really good in hiding it. I don't think I gave it away to anyone (well, perhaps during a pillowtalk with my girlfriend who doesn't care about this game, or any computer game, at all. If anything, she has grown a passionate dislike... )
*pats himself on the back*

Anyway, I do assume I can speak more freely now, as I have seen an earlier working demo of the game and it looked very impressive, and the working-spirit was as 'of old'. Very promising, thus...

Not sure if I have much beans of worth to spill as our blue ones since the game has come a long way since.

Yeah, I was thinking of things like the thread about a year ago asking about which characters people liked from the series - I was pretty sure when i saw it that it wasn't purely out of curiosity.

Hey guys, thought I should give a bit of a translation of the Dutch interview since not everyone masters this language. Sorry for the errors

In gesprek met Triumph over Age of Wonders 3
6 feb. 2013 12:01 / Gewijzigd 7 feb. 2013 10:15

Conversation with Triumph about Age of Wonders 3

The Dutch Triumph Studios has announced the release of the third part of the Age of Wonders series today. We spoke with Lennart Sas, development director at Triumph, to get to know more about this Dutch Strategy game.

GNL: Triumph Studios, we havenít heard from you for a while! What happened in the meanwhile and how are things at the moment?
Lennart Sas: Itís definitely been quiet for a while! The game industry has changed tremendously in a couple of years; you can see the role of the settled parties such as traditional publishers shrinking, while new methods have been added to play, distribute and finance games. We have changed the direction after Overlord 2 quite a bit to become less dependant on the mood of publishers and a changing console market. We are future proof now. AoW 3 is our first game that we intend to create and publish by ourselves. This way we can also have more contact with the gamers.

Age of Wonders is a series that has a lot of fans amongst PC gamers and our readers. What do you think is the cause of this? And why is now the time for a sequel?
I think Age of Wonders has become succesul by itís unique formula of strategy and RPG features, combined in a fantasy World with a warm atmosphere. The last part is often absent in strategy games. Also there is an endless replayability created by multiplayer, user content and procedural (?) generated levels. Why a third part at this moment? Years of fans asking for a sequel, a PC game market thatís back in business and the above expected sales of the digital re-releases of the earlier AoW games. After six years of Overlord we also have aquired a new fresh look upon the series.

For the new people: What can players expect exactly from Age of Wonders in terms of gameplay?
Age of Wonders is a strategy game in which you play the leader of a fantasy kingdom. You explore ellaborate worlds with different climates, including the underground. You build up an empire, collect armies with fantastic creatures and siege war to exterminate your rivals or force them to an alliance. Age of wonders is a bit of a combination of Civilization and a fantasy RPG.

The gameplay seems to be lifted towards a new level by the usage of RPG elements. How does this work exactly?
In AoW 3 we introducť a class based system. We extrapolate these RPG classes to mighty leaders of the fantasy realms, in order to create a varied gameplay. A Warlord will build a spartan society with brutal warriors. The Theocrat inspires his believers with Faith and can call upon holy wars versus his enemies. A Rogue rules like a Gadaffi, fully in control of his own population and has skills to destabilize that of his enemies. Every class has itís own skills, empire upgrade, spells and army upgrades. Next to these main classes players also pick a specialization such as different Schools of Magic to build their own wealth.

Graphic wise the time hasnít stopped since the latest release of the Age of Wonders series. How do you intend to level up this part towards the current standards?
Age of Wonders is currently fully 3 D and runs on the third generation of our Creator Engine (of Overlord). The great advantage of 3D is that we can reflect the playerís picks better in the World. Examples of this advantage are the Hero customization and the terraforming of the landscape. It also enables the option of having a great diversity of Race + Class combinations. For example a Goblin theocrat will be enabled to actually produce small goblin-angels. Itís also easier to present information on different levels of zooming. Battles will look epic and by the increased usage of CPU power auto-combat and replays now run on the full combat battle engine.

What can we expect from single player? You have announced two factions, whatís the difference between them? How does it affect the experience of playing?
You can play the singleplayer through the story campaign, stand-alone scenarioís or random scenarioís. The story campaign is playable from two sides during a great conflict. One side the Human Commonwealth, thatís trying to improve the World by technology and commerce. The other side are the mystic High Elves, created by a reunion of the Dark and Wood elves, that have ended a conflict of many centuries in order to return the humans to the caves once and for all and in this manner secure the ways of the ancestors.

What will the multiplayer offer players?
The game contains a session based multiplayer and uses a real time turns system. Also the classic hotseat and play by e-mail are not forgotten. You can play pre-made standalone scenarioís or use the random maps, in case you donít want to have knowledge about the map lay out.

The ability to add user created content is being underlined in the press release. Can you tell us more about this?
User created content has always been an important part of the series. Even ten years after the release of the last game there are still people creating mods and levels. AoW 3 will include a tool that enables users to add their own content.

Whatís the status of the game? Itís due in 2013 for the PC, how far is your current progress? Is there anything at all you can tel lus about the creation of the third part and the route it took?
We have been working on this new part for over two years and almost every gameplay system is running in pre-alpha mode (?), currently we are working a lot on content. On the GDC in San Fransisco we will present a playable demo to the press and hope to organize a beta. It feels good to present a new Age of Wonders game and we are looking forward to the feedback of our fans. Thank you for this interview and we continue our work on Age of Wonders 3!

I wonder what's going on with the official site. I thought they were preparing for some big reveal but it seems the site is just down for whatever technical reason. Maybe they're adding the new sub-forums and such since there was mention of it.

Edit:
As you might have seen, we had some forum downtime today due to problems with our DNS. Hope this didnít cause too much inconvenience. But weíre back up again and the forum is back in business!
Edit 2: Found a Q&A with Lennart: http://www.matchstickeyes.com/2013/02/25/age-of-wonders-iii-qa-with-lennart-sas/

No new information sadly but still.

I think the original games now made more money in royalties from digital sales than from the original retail games for us.
That shows how loved the series is!

Wow, I completely missed that statement and it's the most interesting one. The biggest factor, imo, is the fact that TS simply get a lot more money per unit sold with digital distribution than they ever could with retail (despite that price difference) as there were a lot of middlemen in that system and devs' percentages used to be quite pitiful.

One of the best things about digital distribution and self-publishing is that the people who create the "stuff" also get much better rewards for their work. Knowing that also makes it more satisfying to buy.

Here's the GDC gameplay vid: http://www.joystiq.com/video/ceae2a75

Quite nice though it seemed weird that the dragon could be "flanked" by a single unit regardless of positioning. Kinda makes it seem like flanking attacks will actually be the most common kind of attack. Maybe it's just a pre-alpha thing.

Oh and the FE-style cloth map looks great.

The dragon copping so many flanking attacks was probably a function of it making itself vulnerable. If you move your troops as a block rather than sending one thing out on its own, it's probably that much easier to, well, cover your flanks. :P

That said, I'd hope it isn't too easy to get flanking attacks all the time - it really would be far too easy if there was only one hex from which you wouldn't get flanking. Maybe make it the rear three, and if you attack from one of the front three then the defending unit can turn and face you without losing a retaliation.

A shacknews "preview": http://www.shacknews.com/article/78518/age-of-wonders-3-preview

The presence of the GDC video is potentially confusing but the gameplay session described in the article is actually different than what was seen at GDC or maybe it's a part of the same session that wasn't shown publicly. In any case there is only a single new piece of information, the earthquake spell.

However there's a new screenshot showing some theocrat research items that are not seen in the GDC video: http://cf.shacknews.com/images/20130402/aow_gdc_2_25232.jpg

Were the races already revealed?
Draconians confirmed was news to me.

It's like watching a flock of clown-like apes trying to navigate a ship, even though the ship has in fact been stranded on some kind of reef for about 7 years and none of the apes have noticed it yet. -Drahnier on OD moderation.
