Official AOW2H Wizards Ladder Current Standings and Hall of Records

Original Ladder System and Rules Created by: ArmageddonUnlimited and Dark Side of Day
Modified for Play-By-Email by: Cay
Ladder Update Program Written by: Talon

Ladder Administered by: Cay

The AOW2H Wizards Ladder is an ongoing competitive system for Age of Wonders II: The Wizard's Throne. Participants seek out and challenge other ladder players to play-by-email (PBEM) games. The winners of each game earn ladder points, while the losers lose ladder points. The ladder is sorted daily, and players move up or down the ranks depending on whether they have won or lost. The goal is to work your way to the top of the ladder where you may challenge the reigning champion to a duel.

Please note: Until further notice the AOW2H Wizards Ladder will operate under playtest status. In the event of any technical problems with the ladder system or update program, ladder administrators may be required to clear or edit match results without advance warning. This notice will be removed when it becomes clear that the ladder system and update program are operating as intended.

So I can play a game with Keldon in a 2vs2 and a game against Keldon in a 1vs1? I'm confused ...

Yes, you can play as many games with or against Keldon as you want, as long as the other players in the group are different.

So, I've deleted Tekk Zero's reply from the Sign Up thread, but quoted the entire post here:

Quoted from Tekk Zero:

Cay, I noticed all over the place the ladder talks about procedure with multiplayer games. It seems to me that this PBEM ladder was just moved over from the online multiplayer ladder. It makes it out as if the two were the same type of gaming. I have played both and they are different. I think the ladder needs to be revamped so it can change focus from an online multiplayer ladder to a PBEM ladder.

Two major things that you might consider revising a lot are the individual scoring and the challenging of the reigning champion.

Don't you think that the currect numbers of the individual player ranking reflects the quick pace of online multiplayer and not the slow pace of PBEM games? It would take 15 wins not factoring in loses to get the higher intermediate rating. That means a player would have to player for a whole year and maybe two years to gain this title! However, in online mulitplayer it can be achieved in a few months, because a player can complete many online games during a single night.

The number of challengers that can challenge the reigning champion seems very high at 15 people. That means 15 challengers could challenge the champion at the same time. That is a near impossible task for the champion to defend. Many PBEMers have a tough time keeping 5-10 games going. If the number is not dropped, you will see the reigning champions changing everyday other day, because the champion cannot take on so many games. The number of 15 challengers accurately fitted the online multiplayer, but will only cause problems in the PBEM ladder.

I beg you to change these two areas, Cay. Once the initial hysteria of the PBEM ladder goes away, players will become less willing to participate in the current ladder. It is too static for the slow pace of PBEM games.

The only other way to maybe fix this is to allow every PBEM game at Age of Wonders Heaven into the ladder. Still I doubt it would then attract newcomers.

With respect to the scoring, I am very willing to change the point distribution if it becomes obvious that this system isn't working. And if that happens, in order to be fair I will go back and adjust scores from games that are already reported. However, I would like to test the current system first. Tekk and Castanieda have already finished a game only one week into the ladder, so you never know -- it might work! But I will listen to what people want...

Secondly, with respect to challenging the champion, I have already considered that. You must have quoted numbers from the old online ladder (top 15 players) because the new PBEM ladder is reduced to challenges from the top 3 players only.

I think you will be surprised, Cay. Castanieda and I played the game at near record speed for me, the game was beat early on at day 5 and it was the smallest map available. That was not your average PBEM game. If more games are won this week, I guess it is possible for it to work (but I really doubt it).

Quoted from Thundarr:

Cay is there some reason we have to do 2v3 or 3v3? I think it is much more fun without those type of restrictions. What if an ally stabs you in the back?

The restriction for having balanced teams only is due to the algorithms in the ladder update program. Without changing the software, there is no way to develop a point distribution for unbalanced teams. This is something that could be done in the future, but it's near the bottom of the to-do list.

In the meantime, just play with allies that you can trust! Also, if they stab you in the back and the team loses, it is bad for them as well. Point this out to them in advance!

Quoted from Thundarr:

Cay I can help with some of the admin duties if you are having trouble keeping up.

Thanks very much for offering. I may very well be looking for volunteers to help out in the future. However, until I test the system and make sure it is working, I don't want to train anyone on it -- they would just have to unlearn it later. Once the system has been working for a little while, and I'm confident there will be no major changes, then I'll be looking for some help... in the meantime there may just be a few slow days here and there!

Quoted from Walky:

Is it possible to post also all challanges in the sticky header as in Thalon Thorns post? or should we move this whole stuff to that thread and leave this thread as a Registry for the games?

If people wish to use Talon Thorn's thread for organizing their ladder games, then I think that is a great idea. Essentially, that is what his thread is there for. I specified to do it in the Game Registry just to keep them separate from the regular games, but there's probably no need. I'll just make sure that Talon Thorn doesn't mind. Either way, I'll allow people to continue posting in the Game Registry if they wish.

Quoted from Ellumesh:

Cay, though Iīd sure love to net Castanieda 9 points, I think you made a slight miscalculation here: I should have been, after one victory, been rated as a Cat.D Low Inter with 102 points total, not a Cat.C Inter, and hence lose/give only 6 points, which would leave me at 96.
Correct me if Iīm wrong...

No, the scoring is correct, Ellumesh. Before the game, you were ranked as a Low Inter (Category D) with 102 points. Castanieda was ranked as a Good Rookie (Category E) with 84 points. Castanieda won the match, so we use the scoring forumla in Row E, which lists the value of opponents in Category D as 9 points.

Make sense?

Quoted from Menaardi:

is the 31st January date still in effect for already running games?

Yes, it is too late to register games that were already in progress when the ladder was launched. A lot can happen in a couple of weeks to change the balance of a game. The deadline was menat for people to register games as they were when the ladder went online. Sorry!

Cay, thanks for pointing out. I īthinkī I got it now. Was just a little surprised to win two points in my first game, then lose 9 in the rematch...just bad luck as the two factors of first game and then Castaniedaīs low rating combining...

Unless there are serious objections, I am going to start deleting old games from the Game Registry. I know the list looks nice with winners in green and losers in red. But deleting those old games will make the job of updating the ladder MUCH easier by keeping the list a more reasonable size. The ladder is less than a month old, and already it is getting a bit unruly to edit that list in the forum window.

Quoted from Tekk Zero:

I haven't gotten around to assigning that honour yet. It will be for players who play a lot of tough games, win a lot of games in a row, accept all challenges made, show good sportsmanship, etc.

Quoted from Evil Roc:

In 2x2 ladder game I'm playing in one of my opponents (Thundarr) is not responding for a week. What shoud we do? Should remaining opponent play for both wizards?

I checked your turn log. It has now been 9 days since Thundarr posted his last turn on 2/14/03. I can see that other players in the game have posted messages on the forum regarding this -- that is good. Those players should also try to contact Thundarr by email. I will also try to contact him by email myself. If he doesn't reply within the next 2-3 days, then I may assess him a default. This doesn't kill the team though -- Thorongil can take over his place and continue the game.

Here are the rules from the Sign Up thread:

Quote:

If you have not received a turn from your opponent for several days, then check the turn log and contact your opponent by email to ensure that the game is not missing.

If a player causes an extended, unexplained delay in a game then the ladder administrator may assess a default to that player. If the player is an individual participating in a 1-vs-1 game, then the opponent will receive a win, and the defaulting player will receive a loss. If the player is a member of a 2-vs-2, 3-vs-3 or 4-vs-4 team, then one of the other team members will be allowed to take the place of the defaulting player.

Players may choose whether or not they wish to use passwords for their ladder games. However, in the case that a player wishes to use a password in a team game, the password should be shared with other team members. If the password is not shared, and a player defaults from a game, then the other team members will be unable to finish the game and will be assessed a loss.

Cay, does the 2-point zero gamer rule apply for team games too? In other words, if there's one or more zero gamers in the game, does everyone lose or gain 2 points or do standard team rules apply?

I'm not sure how the software is programmed, so we'll find out when I enter a result!

But I think the 2-point rule does not count in team games. They should be based strictly on the point differential between the teams, regardless of player categories.

Cay, you've posted that result of my game against Tasslehoff was added to ladder, but in 'current standings' table I still have 3 games played (it was 4th my ladder game finished) and 94 rating (should be 100 with 6 new points). It seems that Tasslehoff's rating wasn't updated too.

Ah... I previewed the updated standings, but forgot to submit the edited post last time I updated the ladder. It's done now!

I think I'll just stop playing now that I got the green font and a positive score (above 100 that is). Or maybe just one more against someone easy like Swolte.. to skip up into the elite..

edit: I can't believe Swolte hasn't retorted... Maybe he just ignored and moved on..

Cay,

Hi. Wonderful site. I have a favor to ask: Could you replace my e-mail address on the registry with the format jay at immaterial dot net? I see that my address has been posted in conventional (bot-readable) format in the registry list and in reply #156 of the sign-up thread. I've managed to keep this address relatively spam-free, and I've found that keeping it off public boards helps considerably.

If past experience is any guide, I'll otherwise be back in a few weeks asking you to change the address that's listed here for me .

Thanks,
JWorth

Changed email address for LordTheRon, and emailed JWorth. I'm happy to change your address, JWorth, however it needs to be either in a valid email format (this could include a NOSPAM insert), or listed as unpublished.

Bad link!
"The thread you are trying to access does not exist."

Top text when linking in "AOW2H Wizards Ladder Main Thread."

Actually trying to find out where to send game results to. Can you give me a tip?

Report game results HERE. It is the thread named, "AOW2H WIZARDS LADDER -- Sign Up and Report Game Results".

I think FinalBolt knows that but said thread was mysteriously gone for the last few days. I didn't see it at least.

Yeah... I had accidentally deleted the entire thread, when I was actually trying to delete just a single message. Being an administrator, I didn't notice because we can see deleted threads just as if they are not deleted. I have since undeleted it.

Kind of gives a whole new meaning to "deleted," doesn't it?

Quoted from Wizards Ladder Rules:

If you have not received a turn from your opponent for several days, then check the turn log and contact your opponent by email to ensure that the game is not missing.

If a player causes an extended, unexplained delay in a game then the ladder administrator may assess a default to that player. If the player is an individual participating in a 1-vs-1 game, then the opponent will receive a win, and the defaulting player will receive a loss. If the player is a member of a 2-vs-2, 3-vs-3 or 4-vs-4 team, then one of the other team members will be allowed to take the place of the defaulting player.

I propose the above rules be replaced with the following:

  • If you have not received a turn from your opponent for 5 days, then check the turn log and contact your opponent by email to ensure that the game is not missing. At the time you send this email, you should send a carbon copy / cc: of the email to the ladder administrator and post a message in the turn log stating that you have done so. If your oppponent does not respond within 3 days, then please contact the ladder administrator by email and provide the game number, a link to the turn log, and the forum name of the player who is causing the delay. The ladder administrator will then take appropriate action.

  • If a player causes an extended, unexplained delay in a game then the ladder administrator may assess a default to that player.

If the player is an individual participating in a 1-vs-1 game, then the opponent will receive a win, and the defaulting player will receive both a loss and a penalty of -5 ladder points.

If the player is a member of a 2-vs-2, 3-vs-3 or 4-vs-4 team and all of the player's team members have already been eliminated, then the opposing team will receive a win, the defaulting player's team will receive a loss, and the defaulting player will receive a penalty of -5 ladder points.

If the player is a member of a 2-vs-2, 3-vs-3 or 4-vs-4 team and other members of the player's team are still alive, then the game may continue as follows: The defaulting player is removed from the game and assessed a penalty of -5 ladder points. The defaulting player's race may be played by a substitute player who is ranked within the same ladder category as the defaulting player (Zero Gamer is equivalent to Low Inter). The substitute player may not be one of the existing team members, and may ask to see a game turn before accepting the position. When the game is completed, scoring will be based on the rank of the team including the substitute player, but not including the defaulting player.

If I receive positive feedback regarding this proposed change, then it will affect both the AOW1 and AOW2 ladders.

I think that's a good change.

One other thing I'd like to mention, and I can't say it without seeming hard on Cay, which is not where I'm coming from at all. I'm very grateful to Cay for organising this, for all his time and trouble, and I think it is a big success. One only has to look at the number of games in play to see that.

However, I would like to see the ladder updates occur a bit more frequently, if that's possible without placing too much more of a burden on Cay.

Sounds reasonable

Chaos is ever-present, unavoidable, even necessary. Chaos is the way of time, the way of nature, the way of unthinking animals. Chaos will happen. But sentient, thinking beings do not need to help it along. Law is the effort of the civilized to slow chaos, to keep destruction at bay long enough so that thinking, dreaming, hoping, and loving can occur.

The change sounds good, but what if it arises that the player tries to bet back in the game if he already defaulted out? I mean, what if I dont post for a couple of days because of a technical error or something like that and then want to get in the game? I ask this question because I have a fickle connection at times and I would hate for an overambigous team to kick me out after only a couple of days of no show.
But I do think the substitute rule sounds good. There is the possibility of ringers I suppose, but I dont think that will be too much of a problem.

I agree with the proposed changes.

And the possibilites of "ringers" is small considering the substitute is same rank or lower than the defaulting player.

i think its a nice change, but... how many days other/s player have to wait? i think that this is an important question for reasons like the one CubanGeneral exposed, for this i think that 3 days it's a reasonable time.
Other point is that players with lower ranking will substitute the missing one, this will make resuming the game more quick.

Quoted from CubanGeneral:

I don't think anyone will get kicked out of a game after missing a couple of days. Players are given and expected to play their turns within 3 days of receiving them. If a turn is missing, most opponents will not take action on the 4th day. However, assuming that they do, they still have to send an email and wait 3 days (I've increased this). if there is no response, they then have to contact me, and wait for me to take action. The whole process will take well over a week, probably much longer. If someone is out of a game long enough for the due process to follow it's course, then maybe they deserve to default. If you're just having technical problems for a few days, then you shouldn't have to worry. At least that's my feeling... I wouldn't worry!

Quoted from anonymous email:

One minor niggle, it looks as if a team player that 'gets lost' is punished more than a solo player. Not sure if that's reasonable.

Excellent point! Should I say that every defaulting player gets a -5 penalty, plus the game could be won/lost if they are the last player alive on their team (or are an individual player)?

Quoted from anonymous email:

I agree with the changes, BUT I think that to be fair, any game that has already started until the new rule is accepted should be 'grandfather claused' under the old rule, since it isnt fair to change a 'contract' without consent from both parties.

Yes, but in the 'contract' I have a rule stating that the rules can change at any time. Also, every player on the ladder (except the NOSPAMmers ) should have received a copy of the email making them aware of this rule change. So... I don't see the need for a grandfather clause... just makes things more complicated for me. Heheh!

I agree with the rule change as well. If players always would give good explanations for being away, and when they will be back, there would be no need for defaulting, but unfortunately it might be necessary sometimes. This will put more pressure on the players taking part in WL games.

I would also like to thank Cay for organizing the Wizards Ladder. It's great fun and challenging.

Not that I'm trying to instigate anything, but is anyone ever going to challenge Tekk Zero to a title match?

Check the rules if you don't know how to challenge the Reigning Champion...
